Publish the Kamalo Report

By: Madi Jobarteh

It is welcome news that Minister of Lands Hamat Bah has finally announced the findings and recommendations of the Kamalo lands investigation launched several months ago. In the interest of transparency and accountability, the Minister should now release the 34-page report to the public.

Citizens have a right to know the details of the investigation. With that knowledge, citizens will be able to follow its implementation to ensure it is done right and appropriately.

Releasing the report would demonstrate the Government’s commitment to transparency and accountability. Pres. Barrow just told the media that he is determined to combat corruption even if it involved his family member. Therefore, to lend credence to that statement by the President, the Minister should release the full report immediately.

Failing to release the report would only mean that both the President and Hamat Bah are engaged in only lip service to corruption. It means there cannot be any trust that the recommendations will be fully, impartially, and urgently implemented. Overall, it would mean that the entire Kamalo lands investigation is a smokescreen intended to silence and divert public attention away from public concerns about Kamalo. This means the resources spent on the investigation are a waste of public resources, hence further entrenching corruption and abuse of office.

Therefore, I urge Hamat Bah to practice what they preach—that the Government is ready to combat corruption and abuse of office—by releasing the Kamalo Report.

EXCLUSIVE: New Political Party Emerges Ahead of Gambia’s 2026 Presidential Election

By: The Fatu Network Editorial

A new political party, the Visionary Gambian Alliance (VGA), is set to enter the Gambian political landscape as the country prepares for the 2026 presidential election.

The youth-led party, founded recently, is in the process of officially registering with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for next year’s election and beyond.

Led by its president and chairman, Njaga Sey, the VGA says it aims to create “a prosperous, democratic, and inclusive Gambia where every citizen enjoys equal rights and opportunities.”

As the 2026 presidential election approaches, the emergence of the VGA adds a new dynamic to the political scene, highlighting the growing involvement of youth in shaping the future of the nation.

Police Investigate Suspected Murder of Senegalese Man

By: The Fatu Network Editorial

The police are investigating the alleged murder of Musa Bah, a Senegalese national, who was found dead on Wednesday, January 29, in the Bansang vicinity of Sukuta Kunda Allatentu.

According to police spokesperson ASP Modou Musa Sisawo, officers responded to a distress call and discovered Bah’s lifeless body, along with his shoes, glasses, and the suspected murder weapon, though his motorbike was missing.

ASP Sisawo revealed that Bah had been visited by two individuals who claimed to be his relatives. “According to his wife, these individuals had come to visit him before he left with them. When he failed to return, concerns arose, ultimately leading to the tragic discovery of his body,” he said.

The two individuals are currently unaccounted for, and an investigation is ongoing.

No Survivors Expected in Deadly U.S. Air Crash

By: The Fatu Network Editorial

On January 29, more than 60 people died when an American Airlines regional jet collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport, crashing into the Potomac River.

Officials confirmed there were no survivors, making it the deadliest U.S. air disaster in over two decades. Among the victims were U.S. and Russian figure skaters returning from a training event.

Investigators said both aircraft were following standard flight patterns, but officials, including President Trump, suggested the crash was preventable. Rescue operations remain underway as authorities recover bodies and search for answers.

D. Jobz Breaks Silence on Wally Seck’s Event Overlapping with ST’s February Album Launch

By: Dawda Baldeh

Notable Gambian artist manager and music industry figure D. Jobz, also known as Baddest Manager, has expressed his displeasure with the organizers of a corporate event featuring Senegalese artist Wally Seck, claiming that this event is overshadowing ST’s album launch scheduled for February. In an exclusive interview with The Fatu Network, D. Jobz criticized the timing of Wally’s event, which coincides with ST’s album launch, calling it a sign of disrespect. He accused foreign artists of encroaching upon The Gambian music scene, a situation he deems unacceptable.

According to D. Jobz, these foreign artists are invading the Gambian music industry and taking opportunities away from local talent. “It is a significant disrespect for ST’s event to be overshadowed by a foreign-organized event,” he remarked, emphasizing that no Gambians are involved in organizing the event. “It has been arranged by Senegalese, and they are featuring a Senegalese artist on the same day that Gambians are hosting their own event,” D. Jobz clarified.

Like many others, D. Jobz highlighted that Senegalese musicians such as Wally Seck and Youssou Ndure have been earning substantial amounts of money in The Gambia. He urged those attending foreign events and spending money on these artists to also support Gambian musicians. “I believe it is inappropriate for these individuals to bring Wally on the same day as ST’s event. We are not making this statement because we are allied with ST. Supporting ST is supporting every other Gambian artist,” he contended.

The prominent Gambian artist manager pointed out that such foreign dominance will no longer go unchallenged, asserting that Gambian artists are not being given the chance to break into the Senegalese music industry. For him, the struggle against foreign dominance in The Gambian music scene is not solely for ST but for all artists. He stressed that if this trend continues, organizers may repeat the same with other Gambian artists’ shows. “Next, it could be Jizzle, Nyancho, or any other Gambian artist,” he added, suggesting that organizers should be advised to schedule their events on different dates.

D. Jobz claimed that these individuals show no respect for Gambians and called on Gambians to embrace and support everything local, similar to what other countries do. “No one from The Gambia would organize an event in Senegal and overshadow any Senegalese artist’s event. We should not allow Senegalese to take advantage of us. Gambia is a significant market for Senegalese artists, yet they do not reciprocate. Whatever these Senegalese artists earn comes from The Gambia. To me, this is a form of modern slavery,” he reiterated.

D. Jobz emphasized that the primary source of income for Gambian artists comes from ticket sales, from which consultants, managers, promoters, and others are compensated. He stated that the Gambian music industry needs protection from foreign dominance. “These Senegalese are attempting to take everything from us. They generate their millions from us, yet they do not provide us with the opportunity to enter their industry,” he alleged. “We want to put an end to this. We will not allow Senegalese artists to invade our industry. We need to embrace Gambian initiatives and stop prioritizing outsiders. It is absurd when people claim the audiences are not the same. ST also requires those corporate individuals to attend his show.”

He informed The Fatu Network that Wally’s presence in The Gambia on the same day as ST’s album launch will undoubtedly impact the show. “The attendees of Wally’s event will primarily be those in the corporate sector, working in banks, government, and private institutions who are financially stable. We are trying to encourage them to attend our events and support Gambian artists, but now many will likely choose Wally’s event, which will affect ST’s event in terms of VIP ticket sales,” he explained.

He added, “If Wally’s event did not coincide with ST’s event, the likelihood of these individuals attending ST’s event would be high. Now, the chances of them going to ST’s event are very low because they cannot trade Wally’s event for any other.”

D. Jobz noted that with Wally performing at the corporate event, direct support from the corporation will not benefit ST. “People should stop claiming that the audiences are not the same. We also need them at our events.”

GAP Calls on Leaders to Oppose Trump’s Mass Deportation

By: Dawda Baldeh

The opposition Gambia Action Party (GAP), led by Musa Ousainou Yali Batchilly, has called on world leaders to oppose Trump’s mass deportations. Batchilly characterized Trump’s commitment to deportation as inhumane, emphasizing that immigrants have played a crucial role in the socioeconomic advancement of the United States.

“I urge world leaders to stand against this mass deportation. Trump needs to be reminded that America owes its current state to immigrants,” he stated. He further noted that the impact of immigrants on the socioeconomic fabric of every nation, including the United States, is immeasurable.

“Immigrants are essential to progress, innovation, and cultural diversity. To threaten their removal is not only inhumane but also a profound act of ingratitude,” he elaborated. “Donald Trump must be reminded that America is a nation founded by immigrants.”

Batchilly contended that from the early settlers to contemporary contributors in sectors such as healthcare, education, technology, and agriculture, immigrants have consistently driven America’s global leadership. “Trump’s own background serves as a testament to this reality; his parents were immigrants.”

The GAP leader noted that millions have sought opportunities in a land that promised fairness and equality. “Immigrants introduce new ideas, stimulate economic growth, and occupy essential positions in the workforce,” he asserted. “Mr. Trump must recognize that the world is observing, and his views on immigration undermine the very principles upon which America was established. Freedom, tolerance, and equality should be celebrated, not sacrificed for political gain,” he stressed.

The GAP leader cautioned Donald Trump and all leaders with similar views to adopt compassion and inclusivity. “History will not forgive those who promote division and prejudice. It is time to acknowledge immigrants for what they truly are—valuable contributors, not threats.”

He remarked that America’s greatness stems from its diversity, not in spite of it.

They are set to appear in court in connection with an investigation into the sale of products allegedly linked to severe health issues, including heart attacks and sudden deaths, according to L’Observateur.

Following this crackdown, authorities are now reportedly targeting sellers of skin-lightening products, with figures like “Mame Ndiaye Savon” (a well-known seller of bleaching creams and soaps) under scrutiny after online medical platforms raised concerns.

ECOWAS Confirms Withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger

By: Dawda Baldeh

The West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, has officially confirmed the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and the Republic of Niger as members, effective from 29th January 2025.

In a letter dated 29th January 2025, the regional bloc acknowledged the withdrawal of the three nations.

In recent years, negotiations have been ongoing between ECOWAS and the three countries in the Sahel region, which are currently governed by military regimes following coups that displaced their constitutionally elected administrations.

Despite the withdrawal of these three nations from ECOWAS, the organization stated in a release that ECOWAS passports will remain valid until further notice.

“In the spirit of regional solidarity and in the interest of the people, as well as the decision of the ECOWAS Authority to keep ECOWAS’ doors open, all relevant authorities within and outside ECOWAS,” ECOWAS stated.

ECOWAS made the following requests to member states:

a) Recognize national passports and identity cards featuring the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, until further notice.
b) Continue to treat goods and services originating from the three countries in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy.
c) Allow citizens of the three affected nations to maintain their right to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment in line with ECOWAS protocols until further notice.
d) Provide full support and cooperation to ECOWAS officials from the three countries during their assignments for the Community.

According to ECOWAS’s statement, these arrangements will remain in effect until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government fully determines the modalities for future engagement with the three countries.

“The Commission has established a framework to facilitate discussions on these modalities with each of the three nations.

This message is essential to prevent confusion and disruption in the lives and businesses of our people during this transitional period.”

Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali Celebrate ECOWAS Exit and New Alliances

By: The Fatu Network Editorial

Thousands of people in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali rallied on Tuesday, January 28, to mark their official withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), effective today.

The three countries, now united in the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States (AES), criticized ECOWAS for its perceived dependence on France and its hindrance to regional development.

Protesters waved flags from Russia—symbolizing their shift away from Western alliances toward new partnerships with Russia, Turkey, and Iran—and chanted anti-French and anti-ECOWAS slogans. The AES also plans to introduce its own passports and establish a unified military force to fight jihadism.

PPP Accuses Kebba E. Jallow of Attempting a Coup After December 2024 Congress Elected New Leader

By: Seringe ST Touray

A leadership dispute has intensified within The Gambia’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP) as conflicting factions challenge the legitimacy of an internal electoral process. On December 21, 2024, the party congress elections were held, and Ousman Madikay Faal was elected as Secretary General and party leader—a process witnessed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and reported by major media houses. Despite this, the party’s internal Electoral Commission later upheld Kebba E. Jallow’s leadership while disqualifying seven candidates for allegedly failing to meet procedural requirements.

Faal, who was duly elected during the congress, has firmly rejected this ruling, asserting that Jallow no longer holds any legitimate authority within the party. In a rejoinder, Faal’s camp stated, “False claims of disqualification are being spread and propagated by former members of a now-defunct committee that no longer holds the authority or legitimacy to make such determinations,” further accusing Jallow of “orchestrating a covert coup against the democratic framework that underpins our party.”

Director of Policy and Implementation Kebba Nanko also reached out to The Fatu Network this morning, emphasizing, “The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) hereby sends an official response to the Kebba Jallow Electoral Commission for attempting to stage a coup. The members of the PPP dismissed Mr. Jallow and elected Ousman Madikay Faal in his place. Since then, Mr. Jallow has refused to relinquish his position, seemingly determined to undermine the will of the people. We are the legitimate body of the PPP as per the outcome of the election witnessed by the IEC, reported by almost all major media houses.”

The ongoing dispute has further divided the party, with Faal’s election still widely recognized within the party following the congress.

GLMA Officials Defend Controversial D18,000 Monthly Allowance Collected at Abuko Abattoir

By: Dawda Baldeh

Officials from the Gambia Livestock Marketing Agency (GLMA) have defended a controversial D18,000 monthly allowance that they receive from the Central Abattoir in Abuko.

Officials explained to journalists during a press conference that the allowance is intended to cover fuel expenses related to their supervisory responsibilities at the Abattoir.

They emphasised that the authorization for this payment came from the Central Abattoir, specifically for GLMA Director Momodou Darboe, Director of Technical Services Sang Marget Mendy, and Accountant Fatoumatta Sonko.

However, Abattoir manager Maddy Kuyateh has strongly denied this claim, asserting that the letter authorizing the payments was signed by the GLMA Board and the GLMA director before being presented to him for his signature.

The GLMA Board chairman defended the allowance, stating, “In the agriculture sector, it is standard practice to receive either an honorarium or fuel support when assigned additional services.

“This is not unusual within the industry. In fact, in all agricultural projects, if you take on a task on behalf of the project, you are entitled to fuel support, even if you are already receiving fuel allowances from your own agency or the same ministry.”

Cham further elaborated, “Contract renewals after their expiration cannot be automatic or mandatory unless specified in the agreement.

“In the case of the Abattoir staff, renewal was not included in the contract. Thus, where is the alleged breach of contract that the Abattoir manager is claiming?”

He continued, “The GLMA holds a supervisory position at the Abattoir, closely overseeing the managerial responsibilities of the staff and the overall operations.

They generate quarterly reports from these evaluations, which are subsequently reviewed by the board.”

Following a comprehensive analysis of the team, Cham stated that the board provides guidance on the best course of action for addressing any reported issues or abnormalities.

He noted that from January to December 2024, four quarterly reports on the Abattoir have been produced.

“A comprehensive report detailing the fiscal and sanitary conditions of the Abattoir has been produced by a task force established by the GLMA in September 2024.

“The findings, along with the results from the audit of the Central Abattoir conducted in June 2024 by the internal audit directorate, highlight significant concerns regarding the state of the Abattoir that require substantial improvement,” he said.

“In light of these concerns, the Board, during its December 2024 meeting, assigned specific resolutions designed to enhance the managerial and operational standards of the Abattoir.”

Cham explained that as a result of the review, the Board made recommendations aimed at improving the management of the Abattoir.

Among these suggestions is a thorough evaluation of the staff roster with the objective of downsizing by eliminating positions deemed irrelevant to its operations.

The goal of this exercise is to transform the Abattoir into an efficiently managed, profitable, and marketable enterprise, which includes appointing new staff and, where necessary, formalizing the renewal of some existing team members.

Regarding the allowances for the three GLMA staff members, Cham stated that the board of directors approved their payments following a formal request from Maddy Kuyateh.

This approval arose from the recognition that the trio has been working overtime, necessitating a request for fuel allowances for all three employees.

Momodou Darboe, the director of GLMA, noted that their findings from January to December 2024 prompted the non-renewal of contracts for certain staff members, primarily due to issues related to electricity consumption and illegal connections.

“The Board of Directors has raised concerns regarding the Abattoir’s excessive electricity consumption.

“Consequently, the GLMA was directed to hire an electrician to conduct an assessment,” Darboe explained.

“The findings were alarming as the Abattoir was spending an astonishing 60,000 dalasis each month.

“However, our investigation revealed that it could have operated efficiently on just 41,000 dalasis per month.

“Upon realizing this discrepancy, we took immediate action to disconnect the illegal electricity connection that had been in place.”

Darboe also highlighted a series of financial irregularities that he alleges the management and staff of the GLMA have committed, which he asserts violate the GPPA Act.

“What Pleasure Did He Derive From Such Actions?” – Brikama Area Council Accuses WCR Governor Bojang of Vendor Stall Demolition

By: Alieu Jallow

The Brikama Area Council (BAC) has expressed strong objections to a directive issued by West Coast Region Governor Ousman Bojang, which led to the demolition of vendor stalls near the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 23, 2025. The council contends that this action undermines their efforts to support local vendors and develop the region.

In an exclusive interview with The Fatu Network, the Public Relations Officer, Sheriffo Singhateh, alleged that Governor Ousman Bojang was the mastermind behind the tension and had attempted to use his authority to command the Brikama Police to execute the demolition.

Singhateh explained that the governor was trying to emphasize his authority, which, in turn, prompted the council to respond in the interest of vulnerable people. He noted that the governor’s office and the council should act as partners in development.

“You cannot compare the authority of an appointee or an appointed staff to an elected position. Does it make sense? Governors are appointed, and chairmen are elected. So, his position can never be more powerful than the position of the chairman of the council. Yet, instead, he chooses to go around or act with the intention of using the police to carry out his plans because he believes the police have all the necessary equipment and materials. But why, in the first place, would you wish to see your populace suffering?

“What pleasure do you derive from seeing those you claim to govern endure hardships, police brutality, and injustice? What is the satisfaction in that? That’s the question we are asking. What pleasure does he derive from such actions?” Singhateh stated.

He emphasized that the relocation of vendors had been conducted in consultation with relevant authorities to ensure compliance with the “Operation Clear the Road” initiative. On January 14, 2025, officers from the operation inspected the area and confirmed that the stalls were well-aligned and did not obstruct traffic flow.

“Even though we have the statutory mandate to do it, we didn’t want to act unilaterally. We held consultations, and in fact, the command of Operation Clear the Road gave us the green light to reallocate some of these stall owners there. So we did that,” Singhateh explained.

The council reiterated their determination to resist actions that undermine their mandate to promote sustainable development in the West Coast Region.

“Our position is that we will never sit back and watch our populace or taxpayers suffer. Remember, I don’t have a stall in that place, and neither does the chairman or any of his immediate family members. But that doesn’t matter. Leadership isn’t about thinking selfishly. Whosoever occupies that space is just as important to the chairman and the council officers as their own family members.

“Sitting back and watching these people cry, struggle, and go through suffering is not leadership. True leadership means that when we suffer, we all suffer, and when we progress, we all progress together,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Governor Ousman Bojang denied the allegations, stressing that he was not the architect of the Road Clearing Exercise and does not have the authority to order the police.

“The road-clearing exercise is a national program, and everyone needs to follow the law. The office of the governor is a stakeholder, like any other stakeholder. I am not involved in peddling fabricated, attention-seeking issues,” he clarified.

Following the brief tension, a stakeholder meeting was held to restore relationships and ensure smooth collaboration. The council affirmed their commitment to advancing development, emphasizing that they do not view the office of the governor, the Office of the President, or the Inspector General of Police as competitors but as partners in development.

Minister Bah Announces Findings of Kamalo Land Allocation Investigation

By: Seringe ST Touray

Minister of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs, Hamat NK Bah, today released the findings of the Kamalo Taskforce investigation, fulfilling his earlier commitment to transparency. “By the time I assumed office, the KAMALO Taskforce was already commissioned; however, in my first media engagement with you, I promised that once the Taskforce has completed its mandate, I will make the report public,” Minister Bah stated.

The Multi-sectoral Taskforce was established through an executive order following what the minister described as “numerous complaints from the general public.” The investigation aimed to review the land allocation process at the Kamalo layout and determine the extent of any impropriety.

“The Taskforce, upon completion of its responsibility, submitted a 34-page report with 14 recommendations to my office,” Minister Bah explained. “Upon receipt of the report, my Ministry transmitted the same to the Attorney General’s Chamber requesting for a legal advice. Consequently, the Attorney General’s office proffered two options for my consideration.”

Regarding the Kamalo layout’s status, Minister Bah announced a key modification to the original recommendations: “This is hereby varied and substituted with option number 2 of the legal opinion. Accordingly, Kamalo proper is hereby maintained, and Kamalo extension is hereby revoked in its entirety.”

The minister outlined several specific measures to address irregularities, including the development of a National Land Policy, which he confirmed is making progress: “Implementation is on high gear for the completion of NLP.”

Other adopted recommendations include:

  • Revocation of allocations within Kamalo proper without ministerial approval
  • Cancellation of allocations lacking proper documentation
  • A requirement for company rather than personal bank statements
  • Forfeiture of multiple allocations, with Minister Bah stating, “Allotees with multiple allocation hereby forfeit one to the state within Kamalo proper”
  • Comprehensive environmental impact assessments before further development

In a specific case highlighted in the report, “The allocation given to one Modou Mbye without Ministerial approval is hereby revoked as per taskforce recommendation in Kamalo proper,” the minister announced.

Addressing accountability concerns, Minister Bah emphasized that the recommendation “to hold those officials accountable for the missing Kamalo file is hereby adopted.”

In his concluding remarks, the minister addressed staffing implications: “The Ministry has also noted with concern the Taskforce recommendation on staff of the Ministry adversely mentioned by the report and consequently adopted the taskforce recommendation against them.”

The implementation of these recommendations sets new parameters for land management in the Kamalo area, with specific focus on proper documentation, environmental considerations, and administrative accountability.

“Gambian People Deserve to Be Protected”: Minister Bah Announces Hajj 2025 Improvements

By: Seringe ST Touray

The Minister of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs, Hamat NK Bah, has announced improvements and cost reductions for Gambian pilgrims participating in the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.

In a press conference today, Minister Bah addressed challenges encountered during previous pilgrimages, particularly issues with accommodation, which led to Gambian pilgrims being dispersed across 13 different locations at their destinations last year. He revealed that, following discussions with the Hajj Commission, arrangements have been made to house all pilgrims together in close proximity, within the same vicinity, in both Medina and Mecca.

During the press conference, Minister Bah confronted Numo K. Sanneh, Managing Director of Gambia International Airlines (GIA), regarding what he termed a “bad” contract from the previous year. The minister specifically highlighted the absence of a crucial clause that resulted in significant financial losses for pilgrims due to airline travel date changes. This year, at Bah’s insistence, these concerns have been addressed through a strengthened agreement with the Hajj commission to protect both pilgrims and the airline from such losses.

“These are Gambian people; they deserve to be protected,” stated Minister Bah, who also intervened in the accommodation negotiations. When initial efforts proved challenging, the Ministry took a firm stance, threatening to cancel contracts unless suitable arrangements were made, the Minister said. This approach yielded results, with the Hajj Commission successfully securing accommodations that will keep Gambian pilgrims within the same vicinity.

Despite the impact of global inflation, the Ministry has managed to reduce the cost of the pilgrimage, the Minister noted. The price has been lowered “from 531,000 dalasis to 525,000 dalasis,” reflecting a reduction of 6,000 dalasis per pilgrim.

Another key change is an improvement in food service arrangements. The food menu will now be pre-approved and supervised by the Gambian delegation, with pilgrims themselves making decisions about their meal options. This new system aims to ensure both the quality and quantity of food meet the expectations of pilgrims.

Additionally, the Minister addressed concerns about the sale of rams during the pilgrimage. He clarified that rams are not included in the Hajj package due to differing pilgrim preferences, but issued a warning that any travel agents caught overcharging for rams will be excluded from the Hajj program. Minister Bah urged pilgrims to only use one of the 15 authorized travel agencies to avoid potential fraud.

These changes reflect the Ministry’s efforts to improve the Hajj experience for Gambian pilgrims while reducing costs despite global economic challenges.

Ogbata and his accomplices ran a transnational inheritance fraud scheme, convincing victims to pay fees for nonexistent inheritances.

Many of the victims were vulnerable, and Ogbata admitted to the crimes in court. He is set to be sentenced on April 14, 2025, with a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

“Jammeh Represents the Past and Should Be Erased,” Says GPDP Leader Henry Gomez

By: Seringe ST Touray

Henry Gomez, leader of the Gambia Party for Democracy and Progress (GPDP) and adviser to President Adama Barrow, has publicly dismissed recent threats made by former President Yahya Jammeh about returning from exile to challenge the current administration. Jammeh, who has been in exile in Equatorial Guinea since January 2017, described his envisioned return as “a day of reckoning” for President Barrow’s government.

In a widely circulated video, Gomez strongly criticized Jammeh’s authoritarian history, stating, “All Yahya Jammeh knows are guns and brute force,” referencing Jammeh’s use of violence and coercion to impose his will during his 22 years in power.

Addressing the general public, Gomez sought to ease fears about Jammeh’s potential return: “Those afraid of Jammeh returning should know that Jammeh isn’t returning anywhere.”

He also sent a clear warning to Jammeh’s supporters and the public about the consequences of any attempted return: “In the event of Jammeh’s return, he’d be captured and taken to court.”

Gomez urged Gambians to move past the Jammeh era and focus on addressing the country’s pressing challenges. “We should be focused on solutions to move the country forward, including solutions to solve youth unemployment and inflation,” he said.

He concluded by cautioning against giving Jammeh any political relevance. “Gambians shouldn’t flirt with the idea of reintroducing Jammeh back into our political system,” he said, emphasizing that “Jammeh represents the past and should be erased.”

Why Are They Protecting Yaya Jammeh?

By: Madi Jobarteh

When Ousainou Darboe or Essa Faal raise critical and legitimate issues about the Barrow regime, immediately we would see Barrow get into fits to respond to them. When journalists and activists report or raise critical concerns about the government, we would see Barrow respond with so much venom and anger.

His handlers and surrogates would then follow suit to harangue and fret at these political leaders, critics, journalists and activists. These handlers include Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie, the Minister of Information Ismaila Ceesay, Chief of Staff Mod Ceesay or spokespersons such as Ebrima Sankareh, Dou Sanno, Saihou Mballow, Henry Gomez, and Sulayman Camara among others.

These handlers will spare no effort in insulting, ridiculing, threatening and demonizing Ousainou Darboe, Mamma Kandeh, Essa Faal, Coach Pa Samba Jow, Alagie Saidy Barrow, Madi Jobarteh, as well as the journalists and others. Yet these people are not fugitives nor are they criminals, murderers, or people who looted this country as public officials as Yaya Jammeh did.

But it is now more than 48 hours since Tinpot Dictaor Yaya Jammeh went on the rampage to insult, threaten and ridicule Adama Barrow personally. He went further to trash the Barrow administration as useless, corrupt and incompetent. Yaya went further to even dare the entire government that he will return and nothing will happen to him!

But, no response from State House, nor from Minister of Justice or Minister of Information or from Deputy Speaker or from the NPP headquarters or from the offices of the presidential advisors!

Why is Adama Barrow and his army of handlers silent? Are they afraid of Jammeh? Or are they protecting him?

Why is the Minister of Justice Dawda Jallow failing to defend the transitional justice process and reassure victims by responding to Jammeh? Why is the entire government ignoring the statements from Yaya Jammeh? Why is Ismaila Ceesay silent like he is not in this world?

Yaya Jammeh is no ordinary person. His comments cannot be easily ignored like that. Not only was he the very reason and focal point of the entire transitional justice process but also until today, Jammeh has representatives who are inside the country’s top decision making body! There are 4 NAMs who are disciples of Jammeh with the sole objective of protecting him from justice. Jammeh Enablers can be found right inside the Cabinet and holding other key government positions.

Furthermore, Jammeh has influence over the government because it was Barrow who first capitulated to Jammeh by forming an alliance with the APRC. Even if the APRC is split into two, the significance of Jammeh remains undeniable and cannot be ignored.

Therefore, why is Pres. Barrow and his ministers, NPP officials and presidential advisors still silent? Is it that they perceive Ousainou Darboe and Essa Faal to pose a greater threat to the Gambia than Yaya Jammeh? Is that they are more scared of Pa Samba Jow and Alagie Saidy Barrow than Yaya Jammeh? Why are they avoiding Yaya Jammeh?

By their silence, Barrow has shown his total lack of interest in the transitional justice process because he is not interested in bringing Jammeh to justice. Otherwise, he and his officials would have responded to the threats and interference posed by a former dictator. He would have sought official means to immediately seek the extradition of Yaya Jammeh. But none of that is happening. So does this mean Barrow is protecting Yaya Jammeh?

I call on all citizens especially victims, CSOs and indeed political parties to protest against the silence of the Barrow government over the threats and interference from Yaya Jammeh. We need to protest to demand answers as to why this regime is treating Yaya Jammeh with kids gloves. We need to demand to know if Barrow is ever interested in the arrest and prosecution of Yaya Jammeh.

There is more to their silence than meets the eye! Their silence can only mean protecting Yaya Jammeh. That’s a disgraceful and disgusting betrayal of the Gambia and victims in particular! ?

Senegal’s National Assembly voted today to lift parliamentarian Farba Ngom’s immunity, with 130 legislators voting in favor, 3 against, and 3 abstaining from the total 136 votes cast.

This development follows accusations of embezzling over 125 billion CFA francs and money laundering, initially announced by Senegal’s financial prosecutor on January 12. The vote occurred amid political tension, with Ngom’s party, the Alliance for the Republic (APR), claiming the investigation is politically motivated by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.

Former President Macky Sall, currently in Morocco, has assembled a legal team including former justice minister El Hadji Amadou Sall and French lawyer Antoine Vey to challenge what they view as politically targeted proceedings against APR members. The Coalition Takku Wallu legislators boycotted the session, while the vote proceeded based on a request from the justice minister following the financial judicial pool’s investigation.
