Fatoumata (Fatu) Camara is a Gambian-born broadcaster and journalist who currently lives in exile in Georgia. Fatu attended school in Birmingham, UK in 1996 where she studied Media and Communications. Upon returning to The Gambia, Fatu worked at the National TV station as a news anchor until 2000 and again in 2002 through 2005. Thereafter, Fatu worked at the US Embassy in Banjul as a Protocol Assistant/Military Liaison, during which she coordinated military training programs for members of The Gambian military in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Defense. Fatu resigned from the U.S. Embassy in 2008 to establish her own public relations company and started The Gambia's first-ever TV talk show, The Fatu Show, which became the most watched program in the country. In 2011, and again in 2013, Fatu served as President Yahya Jammeh's press secretary. In this capacity, she was arrested in 2013, ultimately being detained for 25 days and held incommunicado "for tarnishing the image of the president," which carried a 15-year prison term.
