REVEALED: IEC’s war with GPPA is what caused voter registration delay

The Independent Electoral Commission has been forced into clearing the air about the reasons behind the voter registration postponement.

The IEC was supposed to commence registering voters for the presidential election in December but it brought itself flaks this week when it announced a delay in the exercise.

The IEC only stopped at ‘logistical challenges’ informing the move – even as it refused to speak to the media on it.

A huge backlash has now forced the commission to clarify saying it “is hindered by the lack of clearance from the GPPA which is required before the release of funds by the Ministry of Finance”.

The IEC and Gambia Public Procurement Authority have been at war over who should supply the former electoral materials.

The IEC wants to hand the contract to a company it identified for itself while the GPPA wants the contract tendered.
