Omar Sarjo: Casamance rebel leader Salif Sadio denies being dismissed soldier’s biological father

0

Casamance rebel leader Salif Sadio has said he has said time and again he did not have a child outside Casamance or even when he was there.

The Gambian army has in recent weeks made headlines after the dismissal of Omar Sarjo regained national focus. The army said Sarjo was removed from the military because of fake documents but government spokesperson Ebrima Sankareh sparked a huge row when he named Omar Sarjo as one of the non-Gambians who was removed from the army. Omar Sarjo had long been accused of being Casamance rebel chief Salif Sadio’s son.

But speaking on the issue in a video that has emerged online, Mr Sadio said: “Salif never had a child outside and when I was here, I didn’t have a child. Everyone should here that. I have said it again and again.”

Mr Sadio suggested it was external forces who were behind schemes meant to bring tribalism in The Gambia.

“This politics you have brought to say this is Salif’s son… It’s not good,” Mr Sadio said.

“They want to bring tribalism for you. Since he is a Jola, so [they said] ‘let’s say it like that’. In our Casamance as soon as you say you’re Jola, they will say you’re a rebel. That’s what the people of Senegal say. Gambians should not accept that.”

‘Conflict is not for Gambia’: Casamance rebel leader Salif Sadio warns that he will fight to wherever he wants if Senegalese soldiers in Gambia attack him

0

Casamance veteran rebel fighter Salif Sadio has asked The Gambia to avoid venturing into conflict saying conflict is not meant for the country.

“Do not enter into conflict. Gambia is small and conflict is not meant for you,” an ageing Mr Sadio said in a video interview that has emerged online since on Sunday.

On Senegalese troops stationed at Bwiam, Mr Sadio said: “I am a fighter, I have never sign any international law. United Nations there or even Ecowas. So if those who signed [the law] can violate it, why not me?

“I am not praying for it [conflict] in Gambia but if it happens, well the gun does not know anything about kinship.

“If Gambians host them [Senegalese soldiers] and they come from there [Gambia] to fight me then I think they would be giving me the right to fight to wherever I want. I am not boasting but I do fight until presidents themselves say ‘even in Planet Mars he agrees [to fight]’.”

Million Books for The Gambia (MBG) project’s vast book drive sees group donate library and staggering 22,000 books to ministry of justice and Armitage High School respectively

By Fatou Camara II

Books for Africa through its Million Books for The Gambia (MBG) program has donated 22,000 books to Armitage Senior Secondary School and a law library to the Ministry of Justice.

The Million Books for The Gambia is a program of Books for Africa, an organisation seeking to empower institutions and students across Africa by way of books. A massive over 800,000 books have been delivered to children and adult learners of The Gambia by MBG since its official inauguration in February 2012. Mrs Megan Meyer Wahl and Mr Kebba Badgie, former CEO of Bwiam Hospital founded MBG in 2008. The current officials of Million Books for The Gambia have been with the program since 2012.

On Monday, 22,000 books and stand lamps were handed over to officials of Armitage Senior Secondary School while the Ministry of Justice was given a law library, with the books and the law library arriving in the country in the same container. The law library was donated by the Thomas Reuters Corporation while the Luanne Nyberg Girls Empowerment Fund funded the books donated to Armitage High School in part.

The very ideas of books being mobilised in the United States and sent to The Gambia was conceived in 2010 during discussions between a medical group called Hand in Health, a Gambian based in US Lamin Lang Dibba and Books For Africa. The latter being the world’s largest shipper of educational books to Africa had worked with Health in Hand, Mr Kebba Badgie then CEO of Bwiam Hospital to ship medical books to Bwiam hospital, Patrick Plonski wrote in an OpEd on Huffington Post in 2012. But it was Megan Meyer of Hand in Health met Tom Gitaa, then chair of the BFA in 2010 and he put her in touch with Lamin (Lang) Dibba, a native of Gambia, Plonski who was familiar with the idea wrote further.

Samba Faal is a founding member of Million Books for The Gambia (MBG) and speaking on Monday at the presentation held at the Ports premises in Banjul, said: “Million Books for The Gambia is a program of Books of Africa and the target is to make sure that Gambia receives one million books from Books for Africa.

“One thing is certain though, we are reminded of the words of a renown thinker, he said ‘we expect to pass through this world but once’. Therefore any good that we can do let us not defer or neglect or we shall not for we shall not pass the world again. This is an opportunity of a life time.”

Also present at the event was Alieu Jallow the registrar at the Attorney General’s Chambers who said the books will complement what they already have in the library of the ministry of justice.

Mr Jallow stated: “Lawyers work with books those are our reference materials and so every serious Chambers really need a law library to be able to do your work efficiently and effectively and so it is no small gesture giving us books or a library for that matter that will be for the use of the ministry of justice.

“But you should also know that as a state law office, every other person who is interested in legal matters is very likely to have a relationship with the ministry of justice by contacting us for these books but it is only possible when we have a well equipped library so these books are going to complement what we already have.”

Abdoulie Fofana of Armitage High School said the books and lamps will help boost the morals of their students and ease their studies.

“Thanks to all those who contributed to make sure the books are around for us. This gives me joy because it is one of the first high schools in The Gambia to receive books that will boost their morals.

“We all know the nature of electricity in the provinces with NAWEC I’ll not comment. We are not very much privilege but with these lamps, any time of the night you wake up you can read , if you are willing to do so,” Fofana said.

The law library is the fifth of its kind donated by Thomson Reuters – the Publisher and Donor of the Law Library with Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton quite critical in the realisation of the projects. Million Books for The Gambia (MBG) says it is thanking Mayor Sayles Belton for her tireless efforts.
The Jack Mason Law & Democracy Initiative of BFA facilitated this latest achievement and Million Books for The Gambia (MBG) is thanking Mr. Lane Ayres, JD for his efforts.
Million Books for The Gambia (MBG) is also thanking the Minneapolis based law firm of Robins Kaplan for funding the shipment as it sends special thanks to Attorney Francois Ecclesiaste.
The organisation is also thanking the Gambian Ambassador of the United States, Mr. Dawda Fadera, for his invaluable contributions. Ambassador Fadera in turn applauded the efforts of Mr Dibba and his partners for their unrelenting genuine support to the government and people of The Gambia. He called on other Gambians both at home and abroad to emulate his important humanitarian work which he said is critical for nation building.
Million Books for The Gambia (MBG) has set out to attain one million books for The Gambia and Monday’s handing over of 22,000 books to Armitage has taken the organisation closer to its mark. `
Million Books for The Gambia (MBG) says it would therefore like to thank Books for Africa (BFA) founder Tom Warth, BFA management, staff and volunteers as well as Dr. Patrick Plonski, Mrs. Carole Patrikakos, Erin Yates and team and BFA Board of Directors, headed by President Joanna Sussman.
At the home front, the organisation expressed appreciation to its founders Mrs. Megan Meyer – Wahl, & Mr. Kebba Badgie, Mr. Musa Mendy, Hon. Dr. Samba Faal, Mr. Burama S. Dibba, Amie L. Dibba, Uncle Moro Jagne, Mr. K. S. Bojang, Dr. Lamin Hans Mbye and all of the amazing people, institutions and organizations worldwide that have supported them along the way.

The MBG program says it would also like to give readers the opportunity to donate to our cause through BFA. Donations can be made at http://www.booksforafrica.org

Alieu Jobe says he told Musa Jammeh ‘thank you very much’ after feared soldier told him he will spend rest of his life in Mile 2 prison

0

Alieu Jobe has lifted the lid on how former military aide to former President Yahya Jammeh Musa Jammeh arrested him following his implication in the March 2006 coup.

Jobe, the country’s former accountant general was arrested in his office shortly after the March 2006 coup plot.

On Monday, he told the TRRC it was Musa Jammeh who said ‘we came for you’ after the feared military man showed up at his office with two soldiers equipped with AK-47 rifles.

According to Jobe, he was put in a tinted-glass Nissan patrol car and taken to the NIA with Jammeh asking him a question as they arrived at the NIA.

“That’s where he asked me a question about ‘on the whole you know something about this foiled coup’. I told him I don’t know. He told me ‘okay, I will take you to Mile 2 and you will spend the rest of your life in Mile 2’. I told him, ‘Thank you very much because you’re not God’,” Jobe told the TRRC.

Deportation kickstarts again: Gambians given up to D6,500 each as they get deported from Germany

0

Gambians deported from Germany at the end of last week received post-arrival assistance from International Organisation for Migration.

Gambians said to be numbering 20 arrived in the country on a charter flight late last week. The government has however been tight-lipped about it.

The UN agency for migration IOM is often called upon to provide assistance to migrants – and those who got deported recently were provided immediate assistance, IOM’s communication officer Miko Alazas told The Fatu Network.

“The pocket money which is of course the immediate needs, transport allowance, clothes… So that’s around 65 euros in dalasis of course and the accomodation allowance is around D2,500 per person.

“So this is the immediate assistance upon arrival. Obviously they will be receiving more support for reintegration in the coming week,” Alazas said.

Alieu Jobe recalls that ‘family member’ Ndure Cham told him he was contemplating overthrowing Yahya Jammeh’s government

0

Former Accountant General Alieu Jobe on Monday told the TRRC Ndure Cham told him during a 2005 conversation he was contemplating overthrowing the government of Yahya Jammeh.

Ndure Cham in March 2006 recruited soldiers to overthrow then-leader Yahya Jammeh’s government. The coup however failed.

Alieu Jobe who was a civil servant at the time was promised head of a so-called civilian government.

Testifying on a conversation he had with the leader of the coup Ndure Cham in the run up to the flopped putsch, Jobe said: “It was in 2005. On a particular day, I can’t remember the day honestly. I interacted with Ndure Cham. We’ve been having lot of discussion because he’s a family member. Generally we have discussion I mean. Family issues, all sorts of issues. He was the chief of defence staff.

“Something strange came up in the discussion and he mentioned to me that he is contemplating overthrowing the government of Yahya Jammeh. And to be it was like I am dreaming. The my first reaction was why. Obviously before you condemn, you need to know why. He gave a lot of reasons.

“One of the things he said was the army is spoiled and when compared to the days of Jawara it was more professional. He said but this is something he cannot allow to continue. He mentioned the issue of human rights violations, also talked about corruption and also stability in the country.”

Spain to send more police to Senegal to curb illegal migration, says foreign minister

0

Spain will increase its police presence in Senegal to tackle criminal networks behind an upsurge in illegal migration from the West African coast to its territory, Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said on Sunday.

She spoke after meeting her counterpart in the Senegalese capital Dakar to discuss the crisis, which has seen around 17,000 migrants land on the Canary Islands this year, a more than 1,000% increase from 2019, driven by economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To encourage would-be migrants to pursue regular channels, Spain will broaden the social security rights of Senegalese citizens legally resident in Spain, Gonzalez Laya told reporters.

In addition, it will reinforce its “presence of men and women from the Guardia Civil, the national police, fighting to dismantle criminal networks of human trafficking in this country,” she said without giving further details.

The Guardia Civil has worked with the Senegalese Coast Guard since 2006 to intercept and deter migrants from undertaking the perilous Atlantic route to Spain’s Canary Islands off the coast of northwestern Africa.

More than 400 people from Senegal are believed to have died attempting the passage since the beginning of October alone, Alarm Phone, a hotline service for migrants stranded at sea, says.

On Thursday, local authorities in Cape Verde said the bodies of six presumed migrants had washed up on the shore of the island of Sal, which lies over 600 km (373 miles) off the West African coast.

Meanwhile, Senegalese police in the fishing town of Mbour said a boat carrying 52 migrants had been intercepted as it prepared to launch on the night of Nov. 19. (Reuters)

Spain calls for resumption of deportations of migrants as ‘back way’ begins again

0

By AFP

Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska on Friday called for deportations of migrants — suspended amid the coronavirus pandemic — to resume, after meeting his counterpart in Morocco.

Arrivals of migrants have soared in Spain’s Canary Islands, off the west coast of Morocco, with more than 18,000 arriving from Africa so far this year, more than 10 times the number seen in the same period of 2019, according to Spanish interior ministry data.

Grande-Marlaska, who met with Moroccan Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, ruled out the transfer of migrants to mainland Spain, a suggestion made earlier this week by local authorities in the Canary Islands.

Madrid’s policy will be to send back migrants “who are not eligible for international protection,” he said.

“Fighting against irregular immigration also means preventing illegal entry routes into Europe from being established,” Grande-Marlaska added.

Talks on Friday focused on issues of security, terrorism, organised crime and migration, especially in the Canaries.

The Canaries have seen a wave of arrivals since the tightening of controls in the Mediterranean, especially in the Straits of Gibraltar, which separates Morocco and Spain.

More and more are setting off into the rough Atlantic waters from southern Morocco, from the Western Sahara area controlled by Morocco, as well as Mauritania and Senegal.

In response to a question, Grande-Marlaska said recent tensions in the disputed Western Sahara had “nothing to do” with the flow of migrants to the Canaries.

“These are issues that have absolutely no connection,” he said.

SAMSUDEEN SARR – COMMENTARY: Is Nigeria sending another NATAG to The Gambia?

0

In what I will characterize as the most baffling revelation by Mr Frederic Tendeng in his article published by The Gambia Chronicle Newspaper on November 18, 2020, entitled Post ECOMIG Exit-Barrow leans on ‘Big Brother Nigeria’, the story literally forewarns us to brace for the possibility of the redeployment of another Nigerian Army Training Assistance Group (NATAG) in the Gambia, reminiscent of the one Sir Dawda Jawara’s PPP government had brought us in 1992. According to Mr. Tendeng, an MOU between the Gambia and Nigeria has already been drafted to that effect with strong indications of its ratification as manifested in a special visit to Nigeria by Foreign Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara and Defense Minister Shiekh Omar Faye on Tuesday October 6, 2020.

The author didn’t necessarily mention the exact date of the meeting, but only the month it happened in October; however, on Friday October 9, 2020, the Gambia Standard Newspaper carried a publication on the same event, captioned, Nigeria will Increase Trade Volume With Gambia, published verbatim from a press release dispatched by the Gambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the Standard’s story, no word was mentioned about Defense Minister Shiekh Omar Faye being part of the delegation which simply spoke about Dr. Tangara and his visiting team with all key statements at the meeting delivered by him alone.

It was essentially about Dr. Tangara meeting his Nigerian counterpart, Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama in his office in Abuja where his team arrived “to push for increasing the volume of trade between the Gambia and Nigeria and strengthening bilateral relationship across all spheres”.

Anyway, upon a quick verification, folks familiar with our trade relationship with Nigeria disclosed its nonexistence, expected to at least commence first before talking about increasing its volume. However in Mr. Tendeng’s article whose details will be examined below, at some point, one of the Nigerian members of their delegation only reminisced over how they used to send cargos in the Gambia. On what? It wasn’t explained.

But Dr. Tangara in his quintessential diplomatic silver tongue “expressed Gambia’s appreciation of Nigeria’s support to the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) and the judiciary without which those institutions, he said, would have completely been crippled”. Hmmmm!

He then told his counterpart how President Barrow had decided to posthumously honor the late General Abubacarr Dada, (Commander of NATAG in the Gambia from 1992 to July 22, 1994, the day the AFPRC toppled the PPP government).

Dr. Tangara called Gen. Dada the Nigerian soldier who helped in the formation of the GAF with Gambians not able to discuss the GAF today without mentioning Nigeria. That Nigeria had sent us the right forces to setup the Gambia Armed Forces, and that Gen. Abubacarr Dada is still a household name in the country. Does Dr. Tangara believe that the Nigerians have not been watching Essa Faal’s TRRC where Gen. Dada and his group were portrayed by the GAF soldiers and officers in not-that-kind-of flattery image?

But it wasn’t after all surprising that among those present at the Abuja meeting when Dr. Tangara was enunciating all those accolades on the late General was his blood brother, an important and powerful figure in their government, one Ambassador Subaru Dada who in turn expressed his gratitude to the Gambian delegation about his brother.

Now, juxtaposing Mr. Tendeng’s story in The Gambia Chronicle to that of the one published by the Standard Newspaper, the former clearly illustrated the presence of Defense Minister Shiekh Omar Faye as a co-leader of the delegation with Dr. Tangara for the mission, which was initially conceived in March 2021 at the 44th Ordinary Meeting of ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council in Niamey, Niger.

Faye was in Niger where ECOWAS member states emphatically warned the Gambian delegation to speed up their Security Sector Reform for ECOMIG to finally pack-up and leave in 2021.

The idea of funding and extending the stay of ECOMIG in the Gambia was a critical concern to member states that, thanks to Mackey Sall, France was convinced to continue funding the troops six-more months.

But in the midst of such uncertainty in the future, it’s hard to tell exactly why, but Nigeria instead of Senegal seemed to have taken over the future security arrangements of the foreign troops in the Gambia. That’s what Mr. Tendeng exactly informed us.

Here, I think we need to read between the lines to understand how Mr. Tendeng tried to rationalize the motive. He highlighted how Nigeria may be consolidating its control of Anglophone West-African Nations in its quest for the ECO, the subregional currency that France is doing everything to be in the vanguard against Nigeria’s membership.

The question therefore is, did France through Mackey Sall warned President Barrow to join the French-ECO-initiative or risked losing Senegal’s participation and by extension, French funding of ECOMIG which if the Dakar forces are to unilaterally withdraw from will certainly expose the Barrow government to the same risk of a possible coup that the Jawara government faced after the unceremonious withdrawal of the Senegalese troops from the confederation in 1989? Or has Barrow like Jawara come to the realization of the unsustainable overbearing presence of the Senegalese around him, constantly reminding him of his dependency on Mackey Sall’s mercy?

Hence, again, like in Jawara’s case, could we conclude that Barrow also had nowhere to run for help under such a looming threat other than to Nigeria?

Anyway, in Mr. Tendeng’s story, Foreign Minister Dr. Tangara and Defense Minister Shiekh Omar Faye discussed and had arrived to an agreement with their counterparts in Nigeria about the necessary military assistance upon the withdrawal of ECOMIG in 2021. That the two governments of Buhari and Barrow have already drafted an MOU to be ratified soon, although according to Tendeng, efforts to secure a copy from Nigeria and Gambia for his story both failed.

Is it going to be another hidden document from the Gambian people, privy to only a few at the top in the same manner the Jawara government kept their MOU on NATAG top secret, or will it be brought before the National Assembly for scrutiny and ratification?

Comparing what was reported by the Standard Newspaper about the statements uttered by the two Gambian ministers in Abuja, it somehow looks like Minister Shiekh Omar Faye said a lot in that meeting including what the Standard published as Dr. Tangara’s statements.

In attendance were top-Nigerian military officers. To name a few there were the Nigerian Minister of Defense, General Magashi, their Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defense Babangida Hussain and their Director of Joint Services Department, Ministry of Defense Mrs Olu Mustapha who represented the Nigerian negotiating team while the Gambia was represented by Foreign Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Defense Minister Shiekh Omar Faye, the Gambia High Commission to Nigeria Mr. Amadou Taal and the Gambia Defense attaché to Nigeria, Commodore Assan Sarr. Why all these people were left out in the press release from the Gambia Foreign Ministry is doubtful.

Shiekh Omar Faye was however quoted to have said that “The Gambia government is planning to posthumously immortalize the late General Abubacar Dada for his role in establishing the nucleus of the GAF” while in the press release that cited Dr. Tangara for that utterance stated that President Barrow had already decided to honor the dead general posthumously. Of course Faye was not truthful in saying that the Nigerians established the nucleus of the GAF which was credited to the British Army Training Team (BATT) in 1984; but like I said, his presence in Abuja was not even mentioned in the Foreign ministry’s press release. WHY?

I am also flabbergasted by the fact that the National Security Adviser, Retired Col. Momodou Badjie was not part of the delegation in the endeavor that had a lot or everything to do with his area. But well, factoring that Col. Badjie has recently in an SSR press-conference update made it clear to Gambians that the whole process to complete their work could take about ten years whereas the conditions laid by ECOWAS at Niamey was the swift implementation of a validated national security policy document along with a National Security Strategy and of course the much awaited SSR for the ultimate withdrawal of ECOMIG before the 2021 general election, taking him to Abuja with his funny idea wouldn’t have made any sense.

But It was also reported that Defense Minister faye not Foreign Minister Tangara commended the Nigerians by stating that “the lifeline for the sustenance of Gambian democracy, its military and judiciary relied entirely on Nigerian support”. The press release from the Foreign ministry ascribed that statement to Minister Tangara.

Could we also in our fertile imaginations conclude that it was Mackey Sall, whom most scholars believe enjoys greater loyalty from Dr. Tangara than the foreign minister is to even Adama Barrow who persuaded him not to report anything about the military agreement and MOU between Gambia and Nigeria which could anger France? Their press release said nothing about the MOU.

Dr. Tangara was accordingly reported to have been secretly decorated in Senegal sometime last year or the year before by President Mackey Sall with the Highest-National Order for his role in the 2016 impasse that gave Senegal and France the lead role in flushing the APRC out of power and ensuring their control of the Barrow government.

Because soon after Dr. Tangara and Mr. Faye left Nigeria, Mackey Sall and President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea Bissau flew together, to Abuja to meet President Buhari and discuss current and future security concerns of the subregion with the Gambian situation exhaustively dissected. Why Mackey Sall and Umaro Embalo would go to Abuja for an important dinner-meeting like that with Muhammadu Buhari and leave Adama Barrow behind, is another conundrum. They could have at least taken him along to enjoy the delicious meals, couldn’t they? Time will tell.
