Police have been handed fresh sweeping powers to inspect newly opened public places without prior notice at any given time.

“Persons found at particular premises during inspection shall not obstruct a Police Officer in the performance of his or her duties,” government spokesperson Ebrima Sankareh said in a statement on Wednesday while announcing the reopening of hotels, restaurants, bars and gyms.

The decision took effect on Thursday – and it comes with certain regulations such as an employee who displays any symptom of COVID-19 or came into close contact with a person infected with COVID-19 to be excused from work and the maximum number or people allowed within the premises is limited to no more than two-third of the usual number.

A person would breaks the regulations faces a fine of D2,000 or imprisonment for three months.
