NUP to depoliticise army, other security forces to be loyal to Gambia and not president

The presidential candidate of National Unity Party Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh said his party will depoliticise the country’s security forces when it takes power.

NUP held a press conference on Friday where its presidential candidate Jammeh spoke to reporters for the first time.

On their plan for the security forces, he said: No country will be able to attain meaningful development without the safety and security of the lives and properties of its people.

“Therefore, an NUP Government will depoliticize our security forces and transform them into an independent body whose loyalty is to the state and not any president or political leader.

“We will embark on rigorous security sector reforms aimed at making the forces more professional and less repressive.”
