An end in sight to their row now? SIC announces ‘long-awaited’ congress

And end to the row over who leads the Supreme Islamic Council appears to be in sight as the council meets to elect a new leadership.

The SIC has been in the headlines in the past months amid a bitter row with a breakaway group over the Muhammed Lamin Touray-led leadership. The group later set up their own Supreme Islamic Council.

The Rawdatul Majalis-backed group had insisted Touray and Co overstayed in office and have refused to call a congress for a new leadership to be elected.

But the SIC in a statement on 4 January its congress will be held across two days, between 9 January and 10 January.
