‘That’s absolute rubbish’: Darboe pushes back at claims UDP is targeting Fulas – as he registers

0

UDP leader Ousainou Darboe dismissed as ‘absolute rubbish’ claims UDP is targeting Fulas in the voter registration exercise.

Mr Darboe got registered Wednesday, accompanied by his wife Mai Ndure whom the UDP spokesman described as the next ‘First Lady’ of The Gambia.

And when claims were put to him of UDP targeting Fulas, Mr Darboe said: “That is absolute rubbish. How will we target Fulas? It’s absolute rubbish.”

The UDP leader also dismissed claims UDP officials have been intimidating Gambians at voter registration centres across the country.

“I think those are false allegations,” Mr Darboe said.

According to Mr Darboe, he would cast his vote on December and then move to State House if he wants to.

“December 4, I will come here to cast my vote and then InshaAllah wait for the transition period to elapse and then move to State House, if I want to. I may not [move to State House]. After all, I was given an official residence here at Fajara but I didn’t go there. And it’s not unusual for that to happen. I know the Liberian president stayed in her home,” he said.

Mr Darboe registered in Pipeline accompanied by his wife and top aides.

CA leader Dr Ismaila Ceesay visits Germany to speak to Gambians living in the country

0

The presidential candidate of the Citizens’ Alliance (CA) Party, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has visited Germany to talk to Gambians living in Germany and the helpers working on their behalf.

The purpose of the visit was for him to get first-hand information about the needs and concerns of Gambian refugees, CA said in a dispatch.

The dispatched continued: “In spring, he was contacted by the Gambian refugee association, a group of Gambian refugee supporters from Germany and the rest of Europe, and asked to mediate after a planned peaceful demonstration in Gambia was banned.

“The contact between Dr Ceesay and the Gambian refugee association has existed since 2018, when the presidential candidacy was not yet an issue. Since then, he has been advising and supporting this group when it comes to drawing the attention of the Gambian government and society to grievances and reminding them of their responsibility for causes of flight and refugees.

“The visit of the presidential candidate was a chance for the Gambian refugee association to finally meet their mentor in person. For the Gambians, however, it was also an opportunity to get a concrete picture of the candidate by asking critical questions. It should be mentioned that Gambians living abroad cannot vote in the next elections. Therefore, the young people appreciate all the more that Dr. Ceesay takes the time for them.

“Many of the Gambians who fled during the dictatorship and who are now working in Baden-Württemberg, completing their education and trying to earn their own income, feel unjustly treated and threatened by Baden-Württemberg’s deportation policy.

“On the one hand, the meetings were intended to listen to the concerns and needs of those affected, and on the other hand, approaches for cooperation between Gambia and Baden-Württemberg were also discussed with the politician.

“Kernen was the starting point for visits to Nürtingen, Heidelberg, Weil der Stadt and places in the Esslingen district (e.g. Wendlingen and Neckartenzlingen) that Dr. Ceesay visited during his short visit.

“Dr. Ismaila Ceesay’s talks with helpers and refugees were usually organised individually in small groups (Corona-compliant) in and around the various refugee shelters. With this form of meeting, he continued the closeness to the people that he also cultivates in The Gambia. A Gambian is a Gambian regardless of your geographical location our party leader believes.”

0

MC Cham Jnr says Barrow administration incompetent

0

GDC national youth chief MC Cham Jnr has said the President Adama Barrow government is incompetent, as he shared his view over the appointment of Oreme Joiner.

Cham Jnr in a write-up he said with The Fatu Network stuck the knife into the Barrow over the appointment again of Mr Joiner. President Barrow had initially appointed Mr Joiner to the IEC only for him to reverse the decision after it emerged the former banker was a member of NPP.

Cham Jnr said: “Barrow’s Administration is not only incompetent but lack of interest in the public outcry. Mr Oremi Joiner who was recently appointed at the unconstitutional position of Deputy  Chairman at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and rescinded after been notified by the public  of its illegality as an Executive Member of the President’s Party NPP.

“Mr Joiner is now appointed as the Chairman of the board of Directors at the Social Security Housing and Finance Corporation which comes back to the same previous issue. Who are the President’s advisers on appointments and legality?

“It is clearly stated in The Gambia 1997 Constitution section 175( 2) PART 3: PUBLIC ENTERPRISES that Public enterprise means any body corporate or other body or institution, wholly owned or controlled by the Government; (2) The members of the Board of directors or other governing body of a Public Enterprise shall be appointed by the President after consultation with the Public Service Commission and shall be selected from amongst persons of integrity, competence and maturity of judgment.

“A member of the National Assembly, the holder of a political office or an office of a political party shall not be qualified to be appointed to the Board of Directors or other governing body of a Public Enterprise.

“It’s seems to me that the Barrow administration careless about the constitution and it means no respect for the rule of law, encourages corruption, and threaten our National security.”

‘Media houses should go out for news’: Darboe complains amid absence of media houses at UDP’s all-Badibu meeting

0

UDP leader Ousainou Darboe frowned at the absence of many media outlets at UDP’s all-Badibu meeting over the weekend.

UDP held a big rally in Njaba Kunda on Saturday but Darboe could not hide his disappointment after only EyeAfrica TV showed up at the event.

Mr Darboe said: “I want to thank EyeAfrica for their presence. All the media houses were written to informing them we’re holding a meeting. Even if UDP did not write to any media house informing them we’re holding a meeting, any UDP meeting is national news.

“Media houses should go out for news. In fact any meeting of any political party is national news. Media houses should not wait to be invited. But GRTS which is state media do not come to our meeting when we invite them.”

Soldiers on the Streets! On what terms?

By Madi Jobarteh

The announcement by the National Guard that it is deploying its forces into our communities in what it calls ‘Operation Restore Sanity’ is indeed concerning. Yes, there is definitely genuine concern and fears in the general public about security. Indeed, The Gambia Government bears primary duty to protect citizens! But to deploy soldiers in civilian communities must not be considered and taken lightly. As citizens, much as we have our fears, we must also not allow the Government to take actions without insisting on due protocols in the interest of human rights.

In the first place, we must recognize that the National Guards is a military outfit that cannot on its own, announce its own deployment and presence in civilian areas. If the military should be deployed in civilian areas, it must be announced by the civilian authorities in charge of the military. This would be the President as the Commander-In-Chief, or the Minister of Defence. They are the right authorities to address the nation to lay out the policy and operational objectives, the parameters and the overall terms of this military engagement!

Going further, in the Armed Forces announcement, there is no toll-free telephone number for public to use in reporting crime or seek help. The only two numbers they provided are mobile phone numbers, hence personal and not official. What is standard is to give landline numbers which should be hotlines and therefore free to call. To call a mobile line requires one to have credit or units. This means if a citizen has no credit, one cannot reach that number to report a crime, which could happen at any time. Therefore, one may ask is the National Guards truly prepared for this task or not?

Thirdly, the National Guards’ press release did not announce the names of the commanders and the base of this operation. Citizens have a right to know from which office is the command taking place and which officer is in charge of this entire operation. Further to that, the National Guards should tell us the duration of this exercise (will it last indefinitely or over a period of time), and how much will this operation cost the country. In that regard, they must also tell us the coverage of their deployment – is it only within the Greater Banjul Area or will it cover the entire country. The National Guards must realise that they must account for every action – whether successful or a failure – they take in this operation.

Fourthly, the Armed Forces did not announce the number of soldiers that are deployed in this operation and the kind of weapons they will use. The picture displayed by the National Guards shows soldiers armed with automatic machine guns. Is that the only weapons they will carry? All of these pieces of information are necessary for the general public to know in order to ensure transparency and accountability. Let us not allow our fears to make us ignore fundamental rule of law and democratic principles in governance lest we harm ourselves even more!

In this regard, the Armed Forces should tell citizens what are the rules of engagement. Deploying armed soldiers in civilian areas means the presence of lot of arms and force. Will the military mount checkpoints? Are they going to fire their guns? Will they arrest? Will they raid places? If they are confronted with gunfire, will they respond? Are they operating on a ‘shoot-to-kill’ policy or not? What happens if stray bullets kill innocent people in their homes? What happens if a soldier commits torture of a suspect? Who takes responsibility if their intervention led to destruction of property? How and where can citizens lodge complain against the conduct of soldiers? These are all questions that citizens must be concerned about so as to ensure that this operation is placed under close scrutiny and accountability.

Citizens must realise that this operation is not a charity. Rather citizens have a right to have protection for their rights, lives and property by the State. This is why there is the Gambia Police Force for that purpose. Thus, if the Government decides to use the military, it must have a genuine reason to do so which should not cause any damage to citizen rights. Therefore ‘Operation Restore Sanity’ and the National Guards and the whole of the Gambia Armed Forces must be monitored to ensure that they conduct this operation in keeping with the values and standards of human rights and democracy.

Finally, has the Government communicated this deployment to the National Assembly Select Committee on Defence and Security for the purposes of oversight and accountability. If not, I hereby call on the Select Committee to demand the Government to provide them the plan and necessary details of this operation in the interest of good governance, accountability and the protection of human rights above all.

Furthermore, while the Constitution grants power to the President to deploy the military ‘for purposes of maintaining and securing public safety and public order’ in Section 188(2), it is necessary that an act of the National Assembly is created to give details of this provision. In other words, the act should determine the circumstances, procedures, terms of deployment, rules of engagement among other details that should guide the use of the military for civilian purposes. Without such a law, the tendency for arbitrariness and abuse to prevail is high. Section 188(2) is too broad and indeterminate hence the need for an act.

Meantime, I hereby call on the President and the Minister of Defence to address the nation and provide the justification, objectives, duration, cost and terms of the deployment of the military in our streets!

0

UDP leader Ousainou Darboe will emerge winner of the December 4 presidential election, according to his closest aide.

UDP deputy leader Aji Yam Secka believes Darboe will pip his rivals to the post in the crucial poll but only after urging Gambians to repay Mr Darboe.

Speaking Saturday in Njaba Kunda, Yam Secka said: “Let’s repay Ousainou Darboe. Are you going to repay him? How are you going to repay him?

“You will register and on December 4, you wake up early and join the queue to fill Ousainou Darboe’s box. And on the 5th of December, we will all hear Ousainou Darboe has won.”

‘We gave you courage’: UDP deputy leader Aji Yam Secka says President Barrow was trembling during first public speech

0

UDP deputy leader Aji Yam Secka has said President Adama Barrow suffered from glossophobia during his first public speech as UDP rummaged for a new leader after Darboe was put away.

UDP suffered human losses after most of the party’s leaders were incarcerated in 2016 by then dictator Yahya Jammeh.

As the search for a new leader got underway, UDP held a rally in Bundung where President Adama Barrow spoke.

Yam Secka said on Saturday at UDP’s All Badibu meeting in Njaba Kunda, as streamed by Camaraba Official: “When Adama Barrow was speaking, he was trembling.

“When he finished speaking, he said to me ‘Aunty Yam, how was my speech?’ I told him ‘I grade you 10 because you didn’t say anything’. I told him ‘you’re speaking and trembling and it’s you were choosing to lead’.

“Adama had no courage. And that’s why when he said he’s bold, I laugh. It’s us who gave you courage.”

Army shares photo of no-nonsense looking soldiers as it announces new operation

0

The army has announced the launched of a new operation dubbed ‘Restore Sanity’ over the ‘sharp’ rise in crime and criminality in the country.

In a statement Sunday, the army said: “The Gambia National Guards wishes to inform the general public that it has launched Operation “RESTORE SANITY” effective Friday 11 June 2021. The Operation is aimed at restoring public order and public safety due to the sharp rise in criminality and criminal related activities in the country. It should be emphasized that the exercise is also meant to complement the good efforts of the sister security forces under the Ministry of Interior led by the Gambia Police Force.

“Operation “RESTORE SANITY” would involve vigorous patrols during the day which would be intensified during the night. Therefore, the general public especially law abiding citizens and all those resident in The Gambia are urged to go about their normal business activities.  However, it may be prudent to avoid lonely, remote and suspected crime infested areas at ungodly hours to reduce the risk of being targets of these criminals. In the same vein, the general public is encouraged to provide the National Guards with timely information about criminals and their locations to assist the security forces in their quest to curtail crime.

“The Gambia National Guards is soliciting the cooperation and understanding of the general public in this worthwhile endeavor in the interest of all and sundry.”
