Bubacarr Keita rape trial: Police officer says complainant’s boyfriend was ‘equally’ charged with defiling minor

0

Police officer Musa Dumbuya told the high court in Bundung on Monday the boyfriend of the complainant in the rape case of Bubacarr Keita was ‘equally’ charged with defiling a minor.

The police sergeant had last week testified they’d initially charged Mr Keita with defiling a girl under the age of 18 years old.

The police officer continued to give evidence in Mr Keita’s rape trial on Monday by saying the complainant’s boyfriend was ‘equally’ charged with defiling a minor.

“If I can remember, he was equally charged with defilement of a girl under the age of 18,” Mr Dumbuya said when asked by prosecuting lawyer Alasan Jobe what charge the boyfriend was charged with.

Mr Dumbuya had last week said he knew Pa Modou Johm and he on Monday said he came to know him “as a boyfriend of the victim, through the victim’s mobile phone”.

“They used to exchange text messages,” Mr Dumbuya testified.

According to the witness, the police invited Johm and he both him and the complainant were interviewed.

“Pa Modou stated that he is a [fuel] pump attendant at Castle [Petrol] Station, where he met the victim. The victim’s father’s house is opposite the petrol station. They exchanged contacts and started dating,” he said.

The witness then said they charged Johm with defiling a minor and when asked why they charged him, he replied: “As I told you, Pa Modou was confirmed to be a boyfriend of the victim.”

He then said when asked by the prosecuting lawyer Jobe whether they found out when Johm began dating the complainant: “Yes. We confirmed the text messages which were exchanged between both og them and Pa Modou said at the time, he dated the victim for only three months.

During Monday’s session, the police officer also testified they found out through the ‘pregnancy test result’ the complainant’s pregnancy at the time was ‘four to five months’ [old].

Four years after his fatal shooting, Foni calls for justice in Haruna Jatta’s slaying

By Ousman Jatta

The Foni Youth Development Association, FYDA, has again called for justice in the death of Kanilai native Haruna Jatta.

Mr Jatta was gunned down by ECOMIG soldiers in 2017 as natives of Kanilai took to the streets to call for an end to the presence of ECOMIG forces in Kanilai.

At the fourth annual charity for Mr Jatta on Friday, Rohey Jatta, the widow of late Haruna Jatta said her heart is still full of grief.

“I cannot say much, because my heart is fill with grieve and sadness. On a daily bases I thing of the demise of my late husband and all the suffering I am going through.’’ Rohey told reporters.

Bakery Saibo Sanneh, former chairman of West Coast Region and Almameh Gibba secretary general of Foni Youth Development Association both also challenged the government to enrsure justice in the alleged murder of Harouna Jatta.

“We want to make sure the government take a stand to all the injustice, hardships, and tyranny Foni is faced with.  Adding, we are asking the government of Adama Barrow to make show the death of Harouna Jatta is investigated.’’ Almameh Gibba said.

“I want to inform the government t of Barrow that, two wrongs cannot make a right. The right of Harouna Jetta’s family must be protected, justice has to be done.’’ Saibo Sanneh on his part said.

Lamin Manga, ward chairman of Foni Kansala highlighting the challenges of Foni, says the government of Adama Barrow has put much interest in the death of Solo Sandeng, giving deaf ears to that of late Haruna Jatta.

“Who is Solo Sandeng and who is Harouna Jatta, they all died on a similar course,” Manga said.

Never Again: The Manifesto of an Unlikely Candidate (Part One)

By Baba Galleh Jallow

It is election year in The Gambia, and yes, as we speak, voter registration is ongoing across the country. Social media is awash with fervor, as Gambians urge each other to go register and vote come December 4, and with pictures of proud citizens brandishing their voter’s cards. It is pleasant to see Gambian individuals, civil society organizations, music groups and various community organizations engaged in voter registration sensitization exercises across the country. This spirit of interest and engagement with our electoral process bodes well for Gambian democracy. Never Again to the monopolization of the political space by governments and strictly political entities! Deka bi nyeppa ko mome!!

I was not in The Gambia during the voter registration period for the December 2016 elections. But I am pretty sure the voter registration mood was not this lively, for obvious reasons. We had a dictatorship then and dictators do not like elections at all because they represent an affront to their self-arrogated political supremacy and ownership of both the country and the people. It does appear in hindsight that during that fateful registration period, Gambians just quietly went to get their voters cards, and when the time came, they showed the dictator who really owned the country. Gambians had decided that never again shall they be denied their rightful ownership of the land, and their legitimate supremacy over their public servants, especially their president.

Then came the impasse – a brief but nerve-racking period when Gambia tottered on the brink of disaster and many Gambians even fled into exile – and eventually, the unceremonious flight into exile of the dictator because Gambians calmly refused to budge and because ECOMIG jets were beginning to fly too close to State House, and ECOMIG boots and guns had entered Gambian territory without any resistance from Gambian security forces. And then came the three-year transition period that never was and with it, the collapse of the political coalition that served as a vanguard for the votes of the people. Much water has passed under the proverbial bridge since the collapse of the coalition and today, Gambians are getting ready to head back to the polls again with an unprecedented number of parties and independent candidates poised to contest the December 4 elections.

In recent days, social media has also been awash with rumors that I plan to run for president. One rumor, obviously unfounded, is that a colleague and I are planning on jointly forming a political party. But there is an element of truth to the rumor that I might be considering running for president this year. Some of my good Facebook friends have even posed the question directly to me and of course, I could only admit that there is some truth to the suggestion that I have thought of running for president this year. Over the past year or so, the idea has been suggested to me several times by friends and acquaintances. And it is true that I have given it some serious consideration. One of the reasons I gave the Government early notice that I will be leaving the TRRC Secretariat at the end of July when the Commission’s final report would have been submitted to the President is yes, to give myself space to search and apply for jobs, which I am doing, but yes to also give some serious thought to the possibility of contesting the December 4 elections as an independent candidate.

As at the time of writing these lines, however, it does not appear that I will run for president in 2021 due a number of constraining circumstances beyond my control. Notwithstanding these constraining circumstances that make me an unlikely candidate for December 2021, I do have some very strong views on what I think the next president and the next government of The Gambia should focus on, and what I think is some reasonably good insight into the nature of the many chronic and growing challenges facing us as a nation and a society. I also think I have some reasonably feasible ideas on how we can manage and overcome some of the most acute of these challenges.

I happen to share the view, with many Gambians that our country needs some serious waking up to do. The current socio-political and economic trajectories of the country are not promising and it is only a matter of time, if things do not improve for Gambian society, before they get out of hand. The troubling levels of poverty, crime, indiscipline, inefficiency, and general chaos we currently encounter in our urban areas do not bode well for the emergence of a healthy and a happy society. Increasingly, the seeds of discontent and therefore social conflict are being sown everywhere around us and the problems we have faced as a nation for decades continue to fester and to increase in severity. I share the view with many Gambians that it is high time that we do better for ourselves, our country and for our children and future generations. And I believe that YES WE CAN do it!

And so while I’m not sure circumstances will allow me to run for president this year, I still think it is useful that I share with the Gambian people the issues I would have advocated were I to run for president. I think many Gambians will find much that resonates with their own concerns, their wishes and their visions for our dear little country in these issues, which I propose to share in “Never Again: The Manifesto of an Unlikely candidate”.

I argue in this manifesto of an unlikely candidate that yes, Gambians are saying Never Again to dictatorship and human rights violations and abuses. But they are also saying Never Again to a plethora of chronic and nationally and personally debilitating problems and challenges that for decades on end have plagued their lives and stunted their growth as a nation, and that seem, until now, to defy solution by their governments.

I argue in this manifesto of an unlikely candidate that Gambians are saying Never Again to the non-implementation of important commission recommendations by government, including those of the Faraba Commission, the Janneh Commission, the Constitutional Review Commission, and the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission. Gambians are also saying Never Again to the chronic lack of decent living wages by large segments of our public servants; Never Again to chronic youth unemployment and frustration and the resultant rising crime levels in our society; Never Again to dismally poor public utility services; Never Again to dismally poor health services and facilities; Never Again to inadequate roads and messy streets; Never Again to an unwieldy and inefficient state apparatus that is more of a creaking resource guzzling behemoth than a functional institution serving the welfare of its citizens; Never Again to chronic food shortages in the face of our abundant land and water resources; Never Again to a poor and inadequate education system that fails to prepare our children for the challenges of the future; Never Again to a business and investment climate that is as confused as it encourages corruption in all places.

I argue in this manifesto of an unlikely candidate that Gambians are saying Never Again to the politics of hostility, insults and exclusion that make our beautiful society so ugly, that put our beautiful culture and traditions to shame, that make a mockery of our beautiful religions, that degrade our human decency, and that stultify our collective national intelligence; And Never Again to a politics that marginalizes and excludes our women and disenfranchises our Diaspora from our national electoral processes.

I argue in this manifesto of an unlikely candidate that yes, Gambians CAN intelligently deal with and resolve all of the above problems and challenges. That while they loom large in our social consciousness and seem rather forbidden in their enormity, their solutions lie at our finger tips, if only we put our minds to solving them.

In this manifesto of an unlikely candidate, I propose to argue why WE MUST and how WE CAN tackle these challenges and take our country to the next level!

God bless The Gambia, God bless all Gambians and God bless all friends of The Gambia!

#NeverAgain!!

Momodou Sabally accuses Madi Jobarteh of being a wife beater as war of words breaks out between duo

0

Momodou Sabally today reserved special opprobrium for Madi Jobarteh as he reacted to criticism by Gambians following his comments against Essa Faal.

Mr Jobarteh was among a raft of Gambians who condemned Mr Sabally over his extraordinary slating of Mr Faal. He had asked UDP to sack him.

But Mr Sabally said today: “As for the ugly idiot Madi moe kuntang Jobarteh, let him go apologize to his ex-wives he has been beating and abusing; and also the many girls he keeps abusing day and night!”

Mr Jobarteh responding to Mr Sabally’s claims branded the former secretary general a cowardice and prayed for him to fight light.

He wrote: “Hilarious!!! So this is all you can do Sabally Momodou! Yet you are supposedly an intellectual and The Gambia’s pen!! Madi Jobarteh! Beating wives and abusing women? In this Gambia! On this earth! Wow.

“So you went to rapists and Jammeh enablers to feed you trash because you lack the courage and intelligence to defend your words and challenge me intellectually with reason and objective analysis!!!

“Sabs, be clever. If you claim to be a man of intellect and faith then uphold sacred values and standards in dealing with fellow humans. It’s weakness and cowardice to seek to impugn the reputation and character of a person just because you have no ideas to confront his ideas.

“My level of decency and intellect will not allow me to injure your person or get even near your family to disrespect them, regardless! It’s not in my nature.

“You cannot claim to be a motivator of the young yet you wallow in mudslinging and unprovoked aggression!

“You cannot claim the Holy Prophet to be your guide yet you are irresponsible with your word! What you tell people reflects not on people but it exposes more who you are!

“As a father and senior citizen, your ways should not be characterized by insults, falsehoods and unbridled attitudes.

“I hope you find light to open your mind and heart to realize your humanity and the humanity of all!”

‘I will never withdraw my remarks’: Momodou Sabally vows never to apologise to Essa Faal

0

Momodou Sabally today repeated his ‘can’t cage me’ maxim and vowed he will not withdraw his comments against Essa Faal.

Mr Sabally has continued to draw flaks after he launched a full-throated attack on Mr Faal. He called the TRRC counsel a prejudiced narcissist in a brutal review of the lawyer.

Many Gambians came after Mr Sabally including from his own party, United Democratic Party.

But reacting to the developments since he made the comments, Mr Sabally said: “And yes! I standby by my words. The post on my public figure page remains there.

“And I will never withdraw my remarks; or apologize to the prejudiced narcissist. Now lemme see what you can do about that.”

NPP MP Squad members wear matching outfits as they hit the road for huge campaign

0

At least four members of parliament who are also members of the National People’s Party have arrived in Njaba Kunda as part of a huge voter engagement exercise.

MPs Saikou Marong, Fatoumatta Jawara, Omar Darboe and Alhagie Jawara have travelled to Badibu along with other top NPP officials including President Barrow’s political adviser Siaka Jatta.

MP Saikou Marong who represents Latrikunda Sabiji told The Fatu Network they are in Badibu for grassroots politics. They will also be in Nawlerr.

Their trip to Njaba Kunda is however the one that will attract attention as it comes a week after UDP held a huge rally in the village.

The MPs were all members of UDP but were sacked from the party due to their overt support of President Barrow whom UDP has fallen out with.

‘Didn’t I tell you we’re winning?’ Unbothered Momodou Sabally shares photos of himself hanging out with youths in Bakau amid huge criticism

0

Momodou Sabally said Saturday afternoon ‘didn’t I tell you we’re winning’ while sharing photos of himself hanging out with youth at a ghetto in Bakau.

Mr Sabally is under fire from even among UDP supporters over his extraordinary attack of Essa Faal. He on Friday branded the TRRC lawyer a prejudiced narcissist.

But on Saturday afternoon, Mr Sabally shared photos of himself with some youths on his official Facebook page where he boasts of over 28,000 followers and wrote: “Happening now @ Bakau – hanging out with the ghetto youths as former NPP registration agent Kebba Touray gets ready to buy tickets for tonight’s fundraising event as his contribution to the UDP… Didn’t I tell you that we are winning???”

Will UDP show leadership and responsibility?

By Madi Jobarteh

If UDP wishes to be respected and taken seriously then it must ensure disciple and order in the conduct of its key party members. The recent unsavory comments by one of its chief propagandists Momodou Sabally against the person, reputation and dignity of the TRRC lead counsel Essa Faal is utterly repugnant and reprehensible!

TRRC is a product of a national policy and it’s Lead Counsel did a professional job in the execution of that agenda. Hence to seek to unnecessarily, unprovokingly and falsely impugn the reputation of Essa Faal is to seek to undermine the entire national agenda for transitional justice, reconciliation and accountability.

Sabally’s comments are the very poison that detractors of the entire transitional justice process in general need to damage the great work of the TRRC hence erode the gains and hopes for a true system change of the country! Such comments are what Jammeh loyalists and supporters would carry forward to pollute the trust and confidence of the Gambian populace that in fact the TRRC was a self serving agenda of few people within the TRRC.

Sabally’s comments are not only dangerous but are also inflammatory that could cause conflict in our society hence a clear abuse of freedom of opinion and expression! His comments are insulting to victims many of who went before the TRRC to pour out their ordeal, most of which are very private, before the world. No party should entertain such gross misconduct from any member.

Therefore the UDP leadership must come out to totally and completely condemn and distance itself from the despicable comments by Momodou Sabally against Essa Faal and TRRC! UDP must discipline Sabally without delay otherwise what UDP would be showing The Gambia is that it is a party in which indiscipline is a way of life!

All of our political parties, except the APRC are expected to provide full support to the TRRC and express their total commitment to the full implementation of the TRRC recommendations. No party or leader in any party is expected to spew irresponsible aspersions against the TRRC and its commissioners, legal team and administrative staff.

Yes, we must hold the TRRC accountable because they are providing public service. But such attempts at accountability should be based on evidence and in line with the principles of natural justice. Hence the unnecessary castigation of Essa Faal by Momodou Sabally is totally not based on any evidence other than personal feelings that are unfounded and mischievous!

Therefore I call on UDP, if it truly considers itself a responsible party that is worthy of governing this country of ours to speak up without delay to condemn and dissociate itself from such tragic comments from a person who had in fact fully aided and abetted one of the most brutal regimes and immoral tinpot dictators on earth!

All serious parties around the world waste no time when a member releases irresponsible comments which are clearly tribalist, racist, chauvinistic, bigoted and outright lies! We see these in democracies around the world everyday! Just few days ago the Republican Party in the US distanced itself from a Congress lady Marjorie Taylor Greene for her racist comments about the Holocaust that she was forced to publicly withdraw and apologize!

Will the UDP make Momodou Sabally withdraw his despicable comments and apologize to Essa Faal and the TRRC and to all Gambians or sack him ASAP?

Dr Samateh predicts Gambians will have best healthcare services in near future

0

By Fatou Camara

Health Minister Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh has said Gambians will get the best healthcare services in the ‘very’ near future going by the caliber of people both at the ministry and the health departments.

Speaking on Thursday during the launch ceremony of two fogging machines donated to the National Malaria Control Programmme by Rotary International and Rotary in the District 9101, Dr Samateh said the nation’s health sector is moving forward.

“Will like to inform the gathering and the people of this country that Gambia is moving forward, the health sector is moving forward. There is a lot happening in the health sector. Facilities are being strengthened, new health facilities are being constructed, old facilities are being upgraded expanded and a whole lot of medical equipment are being procured and more are being procured for the people of this country,” Dr Samateh said.

Gambians have continued to argue the country’s healthcare sector is retrogressing but the health minister thinks otherwise.

He said: “With the caliber of people we have at the ministry, at the directorate and program levels, we are very hopeful that the people of this country will get the best health care services in the sub-region in the very near future.”

Sabally’s attack on TRRC and Lead Counsel Essa Faal Could Politically Cost UDP Unless He Retracts

By Pa Malang Ndure Fatty

The recent attack on TRRC lead counsel Essa Faal by UDP’s most powerful man Momodou Sally is a reminder and evident that citizens are not safe from Yaya Jammeh’s influence and ideology even under UDP Government.

Yes, Barrow’s Government is as bad as anything bad, but Gambia’s problem did not start with Barrow, and I think we should be fair with him when we criticise his government. Sabally would not spare a minute to attack Barrow and TRRC in all fronts but there has never been a single time he talks bad against his former boss Yaya Jammeh. Sabally projected himself as a staunch opposition to TRRC and the Lead Counsel Essa Faal for the simple reason that they are uncovering Yaya Jammeh’s crimes during which Sabally himself was part of Jammeh’s most trusted loyalist.

Sadly, Sabally’s latest attack on TRRC Lead Counsel was widely celebrated by APRC and Jammeh’s followers who has the same belief as Sabally that witnesses were lying against Jammeh, and some were even bribed. Sabally was not directly affected by Jammeh because he was part of Jammeh when Jammeh was castrating men’s’ and sexually abusing our young sisters and therefore he would not have the empathy with the victims of Jammeh.

People lost their lives and every valuable material to Jammeh. A state commission was established to give justice to the victims only to be notoriously attacked by the same people who helped Jammeh yesterday and today they are part of UDP promising to deliver rights protection for the people of The Gambia. Its absurd. It is a disgrace and disappointment for the UDP party, and it can cost the party a lot politically.

Why hasn’t Sabally took a minute of his time to show compassion with the victims of Jammeh? Why can’t he publicly acknowledge and admit Gambians suffered in the hands of Jammeh and disassociate himself from Jammeh?

In my point of disappointment on UDP leadership they are more interested in anyone who will make Lawyer Darboe a president, someone who will sing a praise song for Lawyer Darboe and someone who would bring more votes to Lawyer Darboe but dispreading the person’s integrity and political ideology. UDP cannot continue like that as a party that promised to give hope to the people of this country. UDP should not entertain anyone to use the party as a base to inflict psychological pain on the victims of Yaya Jammeh.

Citizens expect UDP to have a clear agenda practically manifest on the ground they can be role models for the rest of the political parties in the country. TRRC is established by The Gambian people and Essa Faal is chosen by the people to lead the counsels. It is discouraging and fading our hopes in any potential future UDP Government when likes of Sabally who would be in the corridors of power in UDP Government are setting this bad precedent.

I hope UDP would understand that politics is not only gathering big crowds around Lawyer Darboe but its more about giving hopes and confidence to the citizens of the country you wish to rule. I call on UDP leadership to publicly distance themselves from Sabally’s attack on Essa Faal as UDP itself is the main victim of Jammeh. And I hope Sabally would stop protecting Jammeh’s crimes but also stop attacking anyone who dares to question Jammeh’s crimes.

We cannot be and should not be blind folded and blindly support a political party without reasons and principles. MY political views represent the general interest of the country and NOT anyone’s individual’s interest.

Thank you.

Rotarians boost NMCP ahead of huge national campaign against mosquitoes by giving programme two fogging machines

0

By Fatou Camara

Rotary International and Rotary District 9101 donated two fogging machines worth $20,500 to the National Malaria Control Programme ahead of the upcoming national outdoor mosquito spraying exercise.

According to the chairperson of Rotary District 9101 sub-committee on malaria Dr Emma Bruce, the donation came about after the National Malaria Control Programme approached her institution for assistance.

“The fogging machines are finally here. These fogging machines was a direct request to our sponsors from the National Malaria Control Programme in 2019 to provide two fogging machines for outdoor insecticide spraying in the streets of Banjul, KMC and beyond,” she said.

Bala Kandeh program Manager National Malarial Control Programme The Gambia thanked the donors for the efforts and urged other partners particularly the private sector to come forward and support his programme.

The launch ceremony was held on Thursday in Kanifing attended by the First Lady of The Republic of The Gambia.

‘Your misguided diatribe…’: ZKK tears into Momodou Sabally in letter

Dear Sabally Momodou ,

If your unnecessary, unprovoked vitriolic attack on Counsel Essa Faal was limited and specific to personal and political disagreements, we would have found it equally unnecessary to respond to or reason with you. Your misguided diatribe was motivated by Essa’s work at TRRC where he distinguished himself as an unrelenting champion of  victims of Yahya Jammeh’s decades long bloody and barbaric campaign which, by the way, you have no record of condemning. Your  vilification of Essa Faal in relation to his work at TRRC, therefore, was an attack on TRRC as an institution and would be met with unequivocally legitimate and outright rejection by conscientious Gambians.

But for some of us who have observed your political evolution over time, this did not come as a surprise. You seem to have a lurking but consuming bitterness for people who probed Yahya Jammeh and have taken uncompromising position on the need for his accountability. In fact, you share this strong animosity with all of Jammeh’s minions and apologists who turned out to be your loudmouth defenders and cheerleaders in your shameful stunt against Essa Faal. We have seen how you deployed similar blistering and nonsensical crusade against the Bensouda Family with a view to tainting their public image and dishonor their legacy. In that futile journey too, you had APRC and Jammeh’s soulless and criminal sympathizes backing you up in every step of the way. What all of  these point to, among others, is your continuous unalloyed loyalty to Yahya Jammeh, your obstructionist desire to bend the course of Justice and your unquenchable appetite for controversy where there is need for none.. I call on you to get off your high horse, tone down the tempo and cease projecting yourself as a malleable pawn to attack decent Gambians who espouse and share great vision for Gambia and Gambians.

And just so we are very clear: we will defend Essa Faal’s work at TRRC, all the Commisioners and staff of TRRC and TRRC itself without regret against any and all attempts by Yahya Jammeh apologists and anyone who share their pervasive romanticization of murder, torture, disappearances, corruption and other acts of cruelty against Gambians and non-Gambians . Like everyone else atTRRC, Faal hasn’t done any damn wrong to anyone. He was only doing his job as expected by Gambian people and as required by the Commision’s mandate.

To Essa and all the honorable men and women who worked and are still working at TRRC, we are hugely appreciative of your service to the country. Your sacrifice, bravery and dedication can never be tarnished nor diminished by agents of disgruntleness, bitterness, division and impunity. You deserve our appreciation and gratitude; not  condemnation or ridiculing…

Government lines 11.1 million dalasis for nation’s players but sources tell The Fatu Network the players ‘feel insulted’

0

The Gambia government has prepared 11.1 million dalasis to be given to the nation’s senior players following their representation of the country in recent months.

The players had been expecting their match bonuses following the qualification of The Gambia to the Africa Cup Nations but the government differed the payments to this month.

People familiar with the issue have now told The Fatu Network the players have been told they would be given 11 million dalasis but they are feeling insulted about it. At least 40 players represented the country at various points during international football games.

The Minister of Youth and Sport Bakary Badjie confirmed that 11.1 million dalasis is what the government has prepared to give to the players. He however said he wasn’t aware of the footballers feeling hurt.

According to the sport minister, the Under-20 are to receive 2.5 million dalasis while the nation’s volleyball team will be given D500,000.

Police issue statement over political party supporters wearing military clothes

0

Police on Friday evening said the Office of the Inspector General of Police has learnt with deep concern pictures emerging from social media in which individuals are seen dressed in military paraphernalia mixed with political party colors and logos.

“Lest we forget, there has been series of Press Statements in the immediate past from relevant authorities notably The Gambia Armed Forces who had cause to remind the General Public about the need to desist from wearing uniform without authority,” police said.

Police added in their statement: “Recent activities by some individuals further prompted the authorities to remind those involved in this activity to stop the practice immediately. It is important to note that this act is totally against the laws of The Gambia and therefore, individuals involved must desist from it with immediate effect.

“Wearing of uniform without authority is prohibited as it contravenes provisions of section 169 (1) of Criminal Code Cap 3 Laws of The Gambia 2009 which states: any person who, not being a person serving in The Gambia Armed Forces or any foreign Force stationed in The Gambia wears without the permission of the President, the uniform of any those Forces or such uniform, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

“Equally, sub-section(2) of the above section further states that: any person who unlawfully wears the uniform of any of the forces aforesaid, or any dress having the appearance or bearing any of the regimental or other distinctive marks of such uniform, in such a manner or in such circumstances as to be likely to bring contempt on that uniform, or employs any other person so to wear such uniform or dress, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

“In view of the above, the Inspector General’s Office wishes to implore on the leadership of all political parties to adequately sensitise and advise their militants, supporters and sympathizers to desist from this practice. Party leaders are further encouraged to preach the word of peace and tranquility among their membership particularly, during this period of voter registration as well as during the general elections. The cooperation and understanding of the general public in this regard is highly solicited.”

Imam Chebo Cham says Prophet Muhammad ordered for some people to be killed and says there’s nothing wrong in his comments

0

Top Imam Chebo Cham has said there is nothing wrong in saying some people must be lashed while others must be killed for the continuation of society, in new comments.

The cleric had come under fire after he made comments leaders should kill certain people if society is to remain intact.

But speaking to VM International TV, the cleric said: “People get angry when people are insulting people. So a leader has a right to shut down a radio station. In the eyes of God, it’s not an issue but in our human laws, [they will say] you have violated his right. That he has a right to freedom of speech. So this is the issue we are saying if we should follow that, the nation will not move forward So let’s Gambians understand us. We’re not here to look after any individual interest but the general interest.

“Some must be made to sit on a table and admonished in order for them to stop doing the bad things they’re doing. Some you must place them on a table and beat them. Some you must jail them but there is another who you must kill for him to leave the system so the rest could survive. So there is nothing wrong in this comment.

“The sharia ordered killing. Prophet Muhammed ordered for some people to be killed. But he did not kill them baselessly. He killed them because of society. You have to take out the few for the hundreds to survive.”

Bubacarr Keita rape trial: Police sergeant testifies that he initially charged businessman with defiling a child

0

A police officer on Friday took the stand and testified he initially charged businessman Bubacarr Keita with defiling a minor.

Heavily-built Musa Dumbuya entered the witness box at 11:20am on Friday to testify in the rape trial as the fourth prosecution witness.

The CID officer told Judge Momodou SM Jallow he was ‘stationed’ at Piccadilly Police Post in November 2019 when he one day reported to work and found the ‘complainant, the victim and the accused’.

“It was around 8[am] onwards,” Dumbuya who is a sergeant and has been a police officer for 11 years said.

He testified: “The case file was prepared and forwarded to the gender and child welfare unit under Serious Crime Unit. The file was assigned to a gender and child welfare officer. As I work together with the gender and child welfare officers, often assisting in their investigation, we both confronted both the accused person and the complainant together with the victim. The accused strongly denied the allegation. During the interview, we came to know that the accused, complainant and the victim live in the same house.

“Subsequently, I left with both the complainant and the accused together with the gender and child welfare officer 2Couple Lisa Colley to visit the house located at Tabokoto. The house of the complainant and the accused was shown to us together with the house of the victim, where she was living, her bedroom. From there we returned back to the station.”

The police officer said Keita was charged once they got back to the police station.

“Bubacarr was cautioned, he was charged,” Dumbuya who was at one moment asked by the judge to speak up so everyone could hear him said.

When asked by prosecuting lawyer Alasan Jobe what offence Keita was charged with, the witness said: “Initially I charged him [with] defilement of a child under the age of 18.”

Dumbuya said Keita ‘again’ denied strongly when the charge was read to him. He was then asked whether he would recognize the document where he charged Keita and he said he would.

How will you recognize it?” Jobe asked him.

In replying, Dumbuya said: “If I see my handwriting I will recognize it and my signature.” Dumbuya then confirmed the voluntary statement shown to him was indeed the one he wrote. The judge admitted it into the records only for identification purposes.

Still, the witness testified elsewhere he knows a person by the name Pa Modou Johm.

The case continues on Monday.

Dumbuya began his testimony on Friday by saying ‘he’s the guy I’m facing’ when asked by the prosecuting lawyer to look around and identify Bubacarr Keita after saying he knew him.

‘This dude is a prejudiced narcissist’: Momodou Sabally launches vast attack on Essa Faal

0

Momodou Sabally has launched a full-throated attack on Essa Faal branding the lawyer a prejudiced narcissist.

Writing on his official Facebook page of more than 28,000 followers Friday, Mr Sabally said: “And when someone asked what was my opinion about Essa Faal upon the release of his closing statement at the TRRC, this was my response:

“This dude is a prejudiced narcissist with no other intention but to use the TRRC as a platform to launch his personal political agenda using the misery of poor victims as a launch pad for his political adventurism.

“Essa Faal is someone who himself was a tool of Yahya Jammeh at the ministry of justice in the early years of the AFPRC.

“For such a person to mount the moral high horse and constantly browbeat a selected group of witnesses while protecting others like Fatou Bom Bensouda at the same time; while the nation sits hypnotized, amazes me.

“Let’s watch his next steps; it is only when he rolls out his grand egotistical agenda, that Gambians will understand what I predicted about Essa Faal when he shamelessly bribed a witness at the TRRC in the name of a land gift; and also pitted the unwitting public against the powers that be by preempting the outcomes of the TRRC’s work…

“Essa’s reckless adventure is certainly going to mar the public perception regarding the TRRC. At the very least, Essa should have waited for a reasonable cooling period after the submission of the TRRC report before venturing into politics… But this is Gambia…”

KK’s death: UDP issues statement

UDP has issued a statement over the death of the founding president of Zambia Dr Keneth Kaunda.

Dr Kaunda died on Thursday aged 97.

UDP said: “On behalf of the National Executive Committee, the entire Membership of the United Democratic Party  and on my own behalf, I send heartfelt condolences and pray that the entire Kaunda family and the Zambian people are comforted as they mourn the passing of their first President Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, a true African icon.

“President Kaunda founded and led the main nationalist party, the United National Independence Party, UNIP which campaigned against British colonial rule. Influenced by Gandhi’s strategy of nonviolence, Kaunda spent nine months in prison and later evolved his own humanist, socialist and pan-African philosophy with his slogan: ‘One Zambia, One Nation. As president of Zambia, Kaunda supported the fight of other countries against repressive, racist regimes in South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Mozambique, and Rhodesia now Zimbabwe.

“As Gambians we knew of the special affinity that existed between our first President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara and President Kaunda in the immediate post-independence era. The first generation of African leaders were highly accomplished patriots and they fought to liberate not only their countries but the whole continent and firmly established a Pan African Agenda.

“Therefore, it is gratifying to note that spirit of mutual cooperation amongst Africans is in high gear of revitalization through the Africa Continental Free Trade Area AfCTA. On this sad occasion of the passing of a giant of Pan African Leadership, UDP takes this opportunity to pay tribute and celebrate the rich lives and remarkable legacies of the Founding Fathers of African freedom. May the highest heavens be their eternal abode.”
