‘What they are doing is not correct’: Essa Faal shoots back at critics over his education self-praise

0

Independent presidential aspirant Essa Faal has insisted his statements since joining the race for State House is not about education rather on simple understanding of life.

“If you speak they say Essa Faal is boasting he is educated. What I say is based on evidence. It’s not even about education but simple understanding of life. What they (leaders) are doing is not correct. If it was, we would all support them,” Mr Faal told supporters in Kerr Serign Sunday evening.

His comments come after critics lashed at him for claiming he is the best candidate as he is educated and accomplished unlike others.

Mr Faal had also derided the nation’s leaders saying they are least educated and it was time Gambians chose him as their leader.

UDP raises 2.5 million dalasis at US fundraising event

0

United Democratic Party has raised 2.5 million dalasis at a fundraising event organised by UDP chapter in Washington, Seattle.

UDP organising secretary Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda in a tweet on Monday revealed the chapter raised 50,000 dollars.

“Your love for Gambia is appreciated,” Mayor Bensouda said in his tweet.

UDP will be one of the biggest political parties to contest the December election and money will play a big role in the party’s activities.

The party recently bought new pickup trucks worth millions of dalasis.

Mali could delay post-coup elections, interim PM says

0

By Reuters

Mali could push back presidential and legislative elections from late February to avoid their validity being contested, its prime minister handling a post-coup transition said.

Mali’s progress back to democracy following the August 2020 overthrow of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita is being closely monitored in a region that has experienced four coups in 13 months, two of them in Mali.

Under pressure from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a regional bloc, Mali’s new military leaders agreed to an 18-month transition that would culminate with presidential and legislative elections on February 27, 2022.

But in an interview with Radio France International and France24 on Sunday, Mali’s interim prime minister, Choguel Maiga, said that date could be postponed by “two weeks, two months, a few months.”

“[The electoral calendar] was based on the requirements of ECOWAS without asking what practical steps must be taken to get there,” Maiga said. “The main thing for us is less to stick to Feb. 27 than to hold elections that will not be contested.”

Maiga said a final date would be determined by late October.

ECOWAS has not yet responded. Last month the bloc said it would impose sanctions, including asset freezes, on anyone holding up preparations for Mali’s elections.

Gambians want Justice and Accountability

0

By Madi Jobarteh

The popular condemnation of UDP’s welcoming of key Dictator Enabler Lamin Jobarteh indicate the widespread desire of Gambians for justice and accountability. Fullstop.

Hence Adama Barrow and NPP & Ousainou Darboe and UDP must stop the despicable love affair with the party of the Tinpot Dictator and his key Enablers such as his ministers, NAMs, key surrogates, and perpetrators of human rights violations. All political parties must shun all perpetrators and enablers of dictatorship to demonstrate their commitment to justice and accountability.

UDP and NPP most especially should begin to act responsibly by realizing that a political party is not a ‘fural’ boys and girls club at a street corner. A political party is a national institution that must look like and represent the highest ideals and aspirations of the people. A political party must uphold the highest values and standards of democracy and republicanism.

These democratic and republican values are founded on and meant to uphold and protect the dignity of the human being. This is why The Gambia fought against colonialism to become a democratic republic in which all citizens are equal in rights and dignity.

Hence in a democratic republic no citizen has the right or the authority to violate the sovereign rights of another citizen. Where there are such allegations of abuse against any individual especially in his or her capacity as a public official then there must first be accountability. No individual should be excused from accountability until he or she is put through the due process to determine his or her guilt or innocence.

Similarly, no political party that is in government has the authority to abuse public institutions and transform them into weapons of terror to savage the rights and dignity of citizens and plunder public wealth without accountability. Where such abuses take place, such a party must be held accountable for it’s excesses while in office.

The fact is Yaya Jammeh and APRC and all these Dictator Enablers once had the unique opportunity to handle public office which is designed to serve and protect Gambians. But consciously and deliberately and actively, they chose to totally disregard the Constitution and the sovereign rights of Gambians and their own conscience and faith to unleash uncountable abuses on our people. Therefore, on what moral, political and legal grounds should such people be asked again to take part in the affairs of this society? They had their cake and they ate it, happily and greedily. So, they have no more cake to devour!

In light of the above, the despicable practice by UDP and NPP and Pres. Barrow to welcome key Dictator Enablers into their parties and government is utterly repugnant and a threat to justice and accountability. It is an irresponsible act that no decent party that understands democratic governance shall do.

Political parties are the pillars and vehicles of our governance system. It is political parties that produce the President, NAMs, Mayors and councilors. These are the representatives that run the institutions of governance and development in this country. Hence political parties run this country. Therefore a political party must be guided by the highest values and standards of democracy and republicanism otherwise they become liabilities to the country. By their actions, UDP and NPP are undermining national security, national unity and good governance.

The claim that despite NPP’s evil alliance with APRC or despite UDP’s shameful welcoming and celebration of Lamin Jobarteh, these parties and their leaders are still committed to TRRC recommendations is a nonsensical farce! It is a dishonest claim that only exposes the contemptible disregard of the values of democracy and human rights by these parties.

Actions speak louder than words. UDP and NPP cannot tell us that they can benefit from the support and cooperation of these Enablers yet be also prepared to put them to justice at another time. That’s double standards which is in itself unfair to these enablers.

UDP cannot enjoy Lamin Jobarteh’s support today and then win the election tomorrow only to arrest and hand over that same Lamin Jobarteh to the courts. Similarly NPP cannot tell us that they can enjoy APRC’s support today and win the election tomorrow only to seek the prosecution of Yaya Jammeh. If they can do that then they are also unfair to Lamin Jobarteh and Yaya Jammeh as they have only exploited them to win elections. A political party must not act in such a dishonest way!

Therefore it’s utterly nonsensical to justify these unholy alliances with the party and enablers of the Tinpot Dictator. What is expected of UDP and NPP is to respect The Gambia and her citizens by keeping at bay all known perpetrators and enablers until the TRRC makes its submission and justice is served. But by their actions, UDP and NPP are only telling us that the lives of Gambians do not matter, rather their hunger for power is what is most important.

Surely Solo Sandeng would not approve of such despicable actions of his own UDP party and his colleagues in NPP. Uncle Femi Peters is in shock at such blatant abandonment of principles by his comrades. Sidia Sanyang is in awe that his party and colleagues are hobnobbing with the agents of the party of tyranny! Indeed the fallen heroines and heroes of UDP are panting in their graves for the gross betrayal of their cause by those they left behind.

Therefore, I hereby condemn the UDP’s welcoming and celebration of Lamin Jobarteh and indeed all other key enablers of the Tinpot Dictator who have been adversely named before the TRRC and sanctioned by the Janneh Commission. I hereby condemn all political parties that saturate their parties with APRC NAMs and surrogates such as Seedy Njie and Co who had deliberately and actively sought to burn down this country for the selfish interest of the Tinpot Dictator.

Top APRC women leader Isatou Jifanga Jarju says enemies never thought NPP and APRC will unite

0

APRC’s top women leader Isatou Jifanga Jarju has said ‘enemies’ never thought NPP and APRC would come together.

IJJ stated this while speaking at President Barrow’s meet-the-people tour meeting in Brikama on Sunday.

The APRC national women mobiliser said: “We never had change through an election. This is why excesses that should not have happened happened. But what a Muslim should do is to forgive one another. This is why God made NPP and APRC forgive each other.

“Enemies never thought these two parties will come together. When enemies were making their plans, wanting to treat you with contempt, God then showed them He will make you (President Barrow) lead again and they will not be able to do anything about it.”

‘It’s all false’: Dr Samateh says Women’s Lives Matter members are politicians hiding behind activism

0

Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh tore into Gambian Women’s Lives Matter on Sunday saying the group one comprising politicians who go about deceiving Gambians.

Speaking at President Barrow’s nationwide tour meeting in Brikama on Sunday, the health minister said: “There is a group, I have never mentioned their name since I did not know their name earlier. They like us to mention their name since that increase their popularity. But if you see we’re saying their name it’s because they are misleading people.

“They are called Women’s Lives Matter. Government knows this more than them, President Barrow knows it more than them. This is why he is doing all of these for you. But they are going around misleading people by saying ‘government this, government that’. It’s all false. Because they don’t even understand what they say. Because they have never come to engage the ministry of health so we can explain things to them.

“But on the whole their activities are political. It was today some people sent me pictures where they took pictures with a political leader. People who say they are trying to save the lives of women are now saying ‘vote for X’? Are those not politicians?

“Some of these activists have relatives in opposition parties and are now using this tactic of mobilising women and saying they are the people to stand for them when they it is not true. They can’t do anything for women. I heard they are now doing fundraising to stand for women but go and ask them what they are doing with that money. Ignore them.”

British national arrested at restaurant after DLEAG agents busted his secret cannabis farm in Brusubi

0

DLEAG officers have arrested a British national after busting his secret cannabis farm in Brusubi. DLEAG officers have also arrested his Senegalese helper.

In a statement, DLEAG said: “DLEAG operatives stationed in the West Coast Region conducted a sting operation that resulted in the discovery of a suspected skunk cannabis cultivation centre at Brusubi on Saturday 25 September 2021 around 20:00 GMT onwards.

“Leon Washington Thayard Hall who is the principal suspect was arrested at a restaurant opposite Atlas petrol station at Brusubi with a wrap of suspected skunk cannabis. He is said to be a British National and a resident of Tranquil, Brusubi. A caretaker working for him was also arrested by another team at a different location. Both operations took place simultaneously.

“Thereafter, the team left for the suspected cultivation site at a residence in Brusubi where they discovered three different rooms used to cultivate what is believed to be suspected skunk cannabis. At the said residence in Brusubi, they have all their equipment, manure, fertiliser and heavy duty lamps used to cultivate the said suspected cannabis. From the cultivation site at Brusubi , the team proceeded to Mr. Leon residence at Brusubi Tranquil where six wraps of suspected skunk cannabis wrapped in a medicine like plastic sachets were discovered.

“The Officers also discovered some material and equipment, manure and heavy duty lights used to process the said suspected skunk cannabis at his resident at tranquil. Mr. Leon from preliminary findings is believed to be using the other residence at Brusubi Phase one extension purposely for cultivation while he resides at tranquil.

“He together with the care taker who is a Senegalese National from Ziguinchor, Cassamance by the name Abdoul Majid Baldeh are in custody while investigation into the matter continues.

“It is however interesting to note that Mr. Leon is a person who presents himself as a philanthropist and a businessman. He claims to be selling puppies (dogs) and also claims to be among the trustees and founder of Hand on Africa, a UK based charitable foundation.”

UDP Commits Suicide on National Television

0

The decision by the United Democratic Party(UDP) to embrace former Jammeh enabler, Babadinding Jobarteh, who stands accused of human rights abuses is an extremely bad play in the game so close to December elections.

The recent NPP-APRC alliance offers a unique opportunity for UDP to find purchase on the public mind as a party of change. Instead of making a home run with an historic opportunity to govern after 22 years, UDP has fumbled the ball.

This strategic error and lack of fidelity to stated policy undermines the perception UDP is the party of change. Stinging dearth of principles and lack of imagination by UDP leadership has sabotaged the transition from two decades of brutal tyranny. Apparently, Ousainou Darboe and his overrated advisers are no political geniuses, nor do they prioritize national interest.

First, they saddled us with a president who has zero competence to run a country. He was supported to break a pledge to step down after three years. Stunningly, UDP leader came out on national television to defend him with devastating consequences. UDP can’t be trusted. How can you run a country if you can’t competently run a party?

As a veteran lawyer, I took for granted Ousainou Darboe would have evolved into a grand master of strategy, steeped in political history and there for best placed to lead his party to victory.

But his greatest accomplishment seems to be presiding over the death of his party. UDP has surrendered the moral high ground and is headed for an ignominious defeat in December. The yellow party is dying not by murder, but by suicide on national television. A Barrow win in December will be disastrous, but a UDP win will be no less apocalyptic.

‘This blatant betrayal by UDP’: Coach Pasamba Jow slams UDP for embracing torturer

0

Commentator Coach Pasamba Jow has reacted to UDP’s decision to publicly endorse and welcome former justice minister Babadinding Jobarteh into UDP.

The former justice minister who faces allegations of serious human rights abuses and violations was publicly let into UDP on Saturday with his relative UDP leader Darboe hailing him for the decision.

Gambians have been condemning the development including even UDP supporters.

Coach Pasamba Jow wrote on Sunday: “According an alleged torturer such prominence by a party that purports to support the victims is the height of irresponsibility, and clearly another slap in the face of the many victims. No amount of spinning can explain away this blatant betrayal by UDP.

“Jobarteh was no ordinary member of the Jammeh clique. He has been accused of some very heinous human rights violations against Gambians.

“If the UDP can openly embrace a known torturer ( Jobarteh), what will stop them from embracing the torture party( APRC) if the opportunity presented itself?

“You cannot claim to have a disdain for Jammeh’s human rights violations, but turn around and embrace his torturers.

“Jobarteh definitely has a democratic right to support any party, just like the APRC has a right to coalesce with any party, but no party of conscience, especially a party whose members suffered the brunt of Jammeh’s dictatorship should embrace such characters.

“Just like the Jammeh/Barrow alliance, this act by the UDP is also betrayal of the Jammeh victims.”

‘It’s Darboe who will rule this country’: Babadinding Jobarteh says nobody can stop what Allah destines

0

New UDP convert Babadinding Jobarteh has insisted UDP leader Ousainou Darboe is on his way to ruling The Gambia.

“Whether one likes it or dislikes it, what Allah destines can never be stopped. Lawyer Darboe is the one who will rule this country,” Mr Jobarteh said while speaking at UDP’s Saruja meeting on Saturday where he officially announced joining UDP.

Mr Jobarteh who served as Justice Minister during former President Jammeh’s rule has however seen his conversion to UDP much savaged.

Citizens among them UDP supporters have condemned UDP for allowing a man who is accused of committing serious human rights violations join the party.

Mr Jobarteh is accused by former rebel leader Balo Kanteh of cutting his nipple. He was also justice minister when former President Jammeh executed nine deathrow inmates illegally and he even went to the extent of defending the illegal act.

UDP’s ZKK calls on UDP to ‘immediately’ disassociate itself from Babadinding Jobarteh and apologise

0

US-based Zakaria Kemo Konteh has blasted as egregious political and moral blunder the decision by UDP to accept Babadinding Jobarteh as its newest member.

Mr Jobarteh, accused of serious human rights violations during former President Yahya Jammeh’s rule joined UDP in Saruja on Saturday.

There has been widespread condemnation of the development including from among UDP supporters.

Zakaria Kemo Konteh is one of them and he said in a write-up shared on his Facebook: “I was itching to add my voice to chorus of shock disgust, disappointment and condemnation over UDP Leadership’s decision to not only welcome the disgraced and criminally complicit Lawyer, Lamin AMS Jobarteh, to their party but giving him the center stage at their Saruja rally much to the horror of his victims in particular and the country in general. However, I am retrained by the outpouring of rejection and feeling of repulse from UDP supporters and members who express, in no uncertain term, their displeasure and outright disagreement with their party’s echelon. It was a distasteful, repugnant and insensitive political decision devoid of every morality and decency.

“It is so alarming that the party that had been victimized for decades and home to many victims of perpetrators like Lamin Jobarteh, could turn out to give a national platform to an unrepentant torturer, is the height of sheer political hypocrisy that should not stand.

“I call on the UDP to immediately dissociate itself with Lamin Jobarteh, offer genuine contrition and publicly apologize to victims and Gambians for this egregious Political And Moral Blunder….We expected that the party should be bigger, decent and honorable than providing home and sanctuary for criminal fugitives like Lawyer Jobarteh not matter the political expediency. Our values and principles must not be short changed for political gratification.”

General Lang Tombong Tamba calls on people of Foni to support President Barrow if they…

0

Former army chief General Lang Tombong Tamba has called on the people of Foni to support President Adama Barrow if they want former President Jammeh to return to the country.

General Tamba made this call during President Barrow’s meeting in Mayork on Saturday as part of his continuing tour of the nation.

General Tamba said: “Aside God who can bring back President Jammeh? Who has that power and that wish? It is President Adama Barrow who has that wish.

“So you if the people of Foni if you want your son to return to this country, I ask you to support President Adama Barrow and for him to win the election.”

‘You claim to stand for victims but welcoming torturers’: UDP under fire over Babadinding Jobarteh joining party

0

UDP has come under fire for welcoming former Justice Minister Lamin Babadinding Jobarteh to its fold.

Mr Jobarteh officially joined UDP on Saturday in Saruja during UDP’s rally there and UDP leader Ousainou Darboe personally welcomed him to the party.

But there has been a fall-out regarding the development as even some UDP supporters have condemned the move.

Team Essa Faal member Ahmed Manjang reacted: “What happed to your moral compass? The kettle should stop calling the pot black, NPP and their parent party the UDP are 6 and 9. How can you justify adding within your ranks the man who added legal touch to the brutal killing of the Mile II nine? How could you put my brother Amadou Scattred Janneh in such funny position? Winning the election by ANY MEANS is too cheap, this will not bring the desire change we all yarning for. I call on many victims of Yahya Jammeh to protest against this blatant disregard for their pain, grossly insensitive.”

Mustapha Ceesay wrote: “Do you see why I sometimes do not take their complaints seriously. If you were out there just a few weeks ago complaining about the NPP/APRC alliance and you are okay with Babadinding’s return to UDP, you just need to quit.

“Jobarteh was not only complicit in many of the tortures at the NIA, but he was the Justice minister who presided over the summary execution of the Mile Two 9 in 2012. He did not only stop at physically overseeing the midnight executions but he went to the national television and defended every bit of it. He was one of the indigenous machinery judges who used our criminal justice system to send innocent citizens to Jammeh’s Five star hotel for his pleasure until he himself was send there.

“You claim to stand for the victims, but here you are welcoming one of the principal torturers in your midst with celebration. I just don’t get the double standard in our politics.”

Momodou Lamin Kanagie said: “This guy is worse than the current Executive members of the APRC. UDP must not cry ? about the NPP/ APRC alliance.

“Here is a guy who supervised the extrajudicial killing of the Mile 2 nine and yet the so called activists are muted.. My conscience will not allow me to silent on this one.. Just like Sabally just like jobarteh…”

Ex-justice minister who Balo Kanteh accused of cutting his nipple joins UDP

0

Lamin Jobarteh has joined United Democratic Party and has been welcomed by UDP leader Ousainou Darboe for rejoining the UDP.

“I want to tell Babadinding Jobarteh welcome back to the United Democratic Party. You said it all that they is no family dumpsite. You refuse to have people choose your own relative without you and you regret. But I want to thank you for the hospitality you accorded by guests,” Darboe said while welcoming the former justice minister.

Mr Jobarteh served as justice minister during former president Yahya Jammeh’s rule. In February, he appeared before the TRRC where he pushed back at claims by former rebel commander Balo Kanteh that he cut his nipple.

“I did not touch his nipple talk less of cutting it,” he said while pushing back at Balo’s allegations.

Internet goes down, officials explain cause

0

Internet went down in the country on Thursday leaving citizens in a state of disappointment.

The internet went down at around 6pm on Thursday and lasted for some time.

In a statement, the Gambia Submarine Cable Company said it confirmed that the problem was at the sea level after preliminary findings.

The company’s statement added: “The GSC, GAMTEL and ACE Cable consortium’s Network Operations Center (NOCin Dakar, Senegal) are closely working by carrying out series of tests (here in The Gambia and Senegal) to identify the exact location of the fault at the sea.

“After the identification of the exact location of the fault a Repair Ship would be mobilized to carry out a repair on the damaged part of the cable at the sea level.

“Through Gamtel and the other operators the country’s terrestrial traffic on the part of Senegal (as back up) is connected to ease the traffic congestion.

“The GSC and its entire membership, and on behalf of ACE Consortium apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

President Barrow declares huge welcome clear signal to opposition nobody can stop him

0

President Adama Barrow has said the massive welcome accorded to him by citizens is a clear signal to the opposition that nobody can stop him from winning the December election.

“We’ve listen to what people are saying. People are saying in Wollof ‘jehna’ other are saying ‘abantaleh’. And I think this is a clear signal to the opposition that nobody can stop President Barrow,” President Barrow told The Fatu Network Friday evening shortly after arriving at State House.

President Barrow returned to Banjul on Friday after completing the first part of his nationwide meet-the-people tour.

The huge welcome afforded the president started in Kalagi and it took President Barrow nearly 11 hours to reach Banjul.

President Barrow described his tour as a ‘very very successful’ tour and ‘we were welcomed by large crowds’.

The president said: “I thank the Gambian people for the supporting they have given me. I cannot ask for more than the support [they have given me]. I think the welcome is the biggest welcome. Even my homecoming welcome, this is bigger welcome. [But] it’s because the Gambians appreciate what we are doing.”

Gambia government wins court battle against Facebook

0

The Gambia has won a court battle against Facebook regarding content the social media network it deleted from the banned Myanmar accounts relating to anti-Rohingya hate speech and incitement to violence.

In June 2020, The Gambia initiated discovery proceedings before the United States D.C District Court to compel Facebook to provide content it deleted from the banned Myanmar accounts relating to anti-Rohingya hate speech and incitement to violence.

On Wednesday 22nd September, 2021 Judgement was granted in favour of Gambia Government at the US District court for the District of Columbia granting almost the entirety of The Gambia’s discovery request from Facebook under 28 USC 1782.

A statement by the justice ministry said: “As a result of this Order, Facebook will now be required to produce all of the content it deleted from the banned Myanmar accounts relating to anti-Rohingya hate speech and incitement to violence. It must also produce its nonprivileged documentation that relates to the internal investigation of its role in the Rohingya genocide.

“This is welcoming news for The Gambia’s case against Myanmar as it means that compliance of this Order by Facebook would ensure a significant production of information that could support the Gambia in its current case against Myanmar before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

“In the course of delivering the judgement, the judge, Honourable Zia M. Faruqui noted and concluded that:

‘After seventeen years of existence, Facebook has grown self-aware. It has realized that ‘[t]he need for extensive content moderation is inherent in any platform that is built upon user-generated content, and with over 2 billion users, this is a task of immense complexity and intensity for Facebook’. HRIA at 25. Indeed, the internet is littered with ads by Facebook touting their support for updated content moderation and internet regulations to handle ‘today’s toughest challenges’.

“‘Although an update to the SCA is sorely needed as it ‘was written prior to the advent of the Internet and the World Wide Web,’ Konop v. Hawaiian Airlines, Inc., 302 F.3d 868, 874 (9th Cir. 2002), none is needed here. Facebook’s concern was that the SCA prevented the requested disclosure. However, the SCA has a well-established path for disclosure of deleted content.

“‘Facebook can act now. It took the first step by deleting the content that fueled a genocide. Yet it has stumbled at the next step, sharing that content. Failing to do so here would compound the tragedy that has befallen the Rohingya. A surgeon that excises a tumor does not merely throw it in the trash. She seeks a pathology report to identify the disease. Locking away the requested content would be throwing away the opportunity to understand how disinformation begat genocide of the Rohingya and would foreclose a reckoning at the ICJ.

“‘Facebook describes its remediation efforts for its role in what happened in Myanmar as ‘some of the most important work being done at Facebook. . . . The weight of this work, and its impact on the people of Myanmar, is felt across the company.’ Su, supra. The Court’s decision compels Facebook to live up to its words.

“‘For the foregoing reasons, The Gambia’s request for de-platformed content and related internal investigation documents is GRANTED and its request for a deposition with Facebook is DENIED’.”
