Authorities cancel Gambia’s Comoros training camp due to lack of money

0

The Ministry of Youth and Sport could not access required funds to finance The Scorpions’ training camp in Comoros.

The Gambia was supposed to join the rest of the world for friendly international matches this week but paucity of funds has caused chaos.

In a joint statement on Saturday, the Gambia Football Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports said: “The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) and the Ministry of Youths and Sports regret to inform its stakeholders and the general public that the proposed training camp for the Senior National Team slated between 30th August to 8th September 2021, to be held in Comoros has been called off.

“This decision is necessitated by the inability of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to access the required funds to finance the training camp. When the situation was communicated to the GFF with the options of either the GFF pre-finance the camping or rescheduled it to the next FIFA Window next month, the Federation tried without success to save the situation by way of pre-financing. Thus, the decision to call it off after due consultations with the Head Coach and other stakeholders.

“The football fans and the general public are being reassured of the commitment of both the Ministry and the Federation to ensure better preparations for our giant Scorpions ahead of our maiden appearance in the African Cup of Nations by ensuring there are training camps in both the upcoming FIFA Windows in October and November.”

Faceoff between The State And The Nurses: Can It Be Averted?

By Musa Bah, The Watchman

I have learnt from a very reliable source that a faceoff between the State (through the Ministry of Health) and the National Association of Gambian Nurses and Midwives is imminent. This cannot augur well for the population, especially at this challenging time of COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, every effort must be made to avert it. What is the genesis of this problem and how can it be resolved?

In May of this year, the National Association of Gambian Nurses and Midwives held a series of negotiations with the Office of the Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service on the issue of the payment of their allowances (risk allowance, on-call allowance, special allowance).

The meetings bore fruit when the nurses were told to give the government time to complete computations of these allowances so it could be done properly. All parties agreed that the payments would commence in August 2021.

The Office of the Secretary General then wrote a letter to both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance authorizing them to begin paying these allowances by August 2021. In June, an email was sent to the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health to remind them of the agreement. He replied the next day to say that they (MoH) were working on it.

On 24 August 2021, the Ministry of Health sent a letter to the National Association of Gambian Nurses and Midwives requesting another grace period of one month to complete the computations and pay the allowances.

I have seen a letter, which replied to that plea of MoH, rejecting this request. The reply of the nurses further pointed out that between May 11 and August 24 is 100 days, enough to do any computations had they been serious and concerned about the health of the population and welfare of the nurses.

The National Association of Gambian Nurses and Midwives is threatening to go on a sit-down strike from 1 September 2021 if their allowances are not paid by 31 August. It is fair to say that the nurses have been patient and steadfast enough and that the Ministry of Health should have made serious efforts to pay these allowances by now.

If therefore their demands are not met and they go on a strike the consequences thereof will squarely be on the shoulders of the Ministry of Health.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to justify the lack of payment of the allowances of the nurses considering the important role nurses play in the healthcare sector of the country. In fact, nurses are indispensable and anyone who has even a rudimentary understanding of healthcare delivery can understand that without nurses the entire sector will collapse leading to devastating consequences.

It has now emerged that the top echelon at the Ministry of Health seem to more concerned with how much they can earn for themselves than the welfare of nurses and the health of the population.

A report of the Malagen online newspaper published on August 27 alleges that, “… the ministry made reported excess expenditure of at least $1.2m (approx. D62.7m) and $565, 827 (approx. D28m) from the purchase and transportation of the medical items, respectively. This totals up to D90m, more than the annual budgetary allocation of ministries of information and tourism combined.”

It is not clear what really went on in that saga – or what the State will do about it -but it is evident that had the ministry been serious about the welfare of the nurses, and concerned about the Gambian population they would not have been unable to take care of these allowances. I tried reaching officials at the ministry via email but could not get any response until at the time of going to press.

That is another problem at this particular ministry, they hardly reply to email enquiries.

It will be devastating if, during these times of rising coronavirus transmissions and the alarming increase in the number of deaths being reported, the healthcare sector were to be shut down for that is what a general sit-down of the nurses will cause. Both parties are therefore urged to return to the negotiating table so that we can avoid the unnecessary loss of lives.

Bakso Jaiteh warns ‘so-called’ general MA Bah to stay away from APRC

0

APRC loyal member Bakary Jaiteh alias Bakso has issued a warning to General MA Bah to stop saying he is a supporter of APRC.

Bakso took on MA after the dismissed army general warned that ‘you can’t finish a general’ while referring to the APRC executive who are trying to forge an alliance with NPP. MA said APRC will not be mortghaged.

But Bakso responding to MA on PYFC TV said: “MA is a disgrace. He first went to NPP. When Adama Barrow and UDP fell out, he went to UDP. When he met Ousainoug, he told him he was his father, that he has never been a member of APRC and he never supported Yahya Jammeh. And then what did he say when he went to the TRRC?

“And it’s the same MA who has gone back to NPP. Now he is talking saying he is APRC. Tell MA if conflict is what he is planning to stoke in this country, he will have enough of it. Tell the so-called general he is different from the first general. Lang Tombong can tie MA, sit on his chest and spit on him. This is the general of all generals. MA should be ashamed to talk and telling APRC supporters he is APRC.”

After big Banjul meeting, President Barrow and his supporters turn their attention to Bondali

0

President Adama Barrow and his NPP charges are headed to Bondali in Foni for a huge meeting, less than 24 hours since the president presided over a massive rally in Banjul.

Thousands of Gambian youth filled The Arch in Banjul Friday evening to assure President Barrow of their support ahead of the December election.

On Saturday evening, the president will attend a similar event in Bondali in Foni.

Earlier on Saturday, President Barrow said he was grateful for “the thousands of young people who flocked to Banjul on Friday to show their support for my government and the National People’s Party (NPP)”.

“My administration places a high premium on the education and advancement of young people. To this end, we have made significant investments in education as a foundation for young people’s bright futures. During my administration, we have built around 3000 classrooms and constructed 1000 quarters for teachers’ housing across the country.

“Additionally, my government is building technical and vocational training institutions to empower young people to enhance their lives and engage in meaningful jobs.

“I have faith in the young of this nation, and I am convinced that young people around the country will replicate the support the youths of the West Coast Region and KM have shown,” the president said.

Gambia Transport Union accuses ECOMIG and Gambia army officers of violently attacking driver

0

The Gambia Transport Union has issued a statement condemning the alleged assault of one of its members Ebrima I.S. Bah by Gambian and ECOMIG security personnel.

In a statement signed by President Omar Ceesay, GTU alleged: ” The incident occurred on Saturday morning 28 August 2021 around Westfield in the Kanifing Municipality, when a convoy motorcade of these aforementioned securities were passing while Mr. Bah was driving a KMC garbage collection truck, and the security personnel stopped and had verbal conversation with the driver before assaulting him physically.

“Mr. Bah is a truck driver at the KMC. The Union is condemning such unfortunate act in the strongest term. Assaulting him is a human rights violation.

“Our Union is calling on the government to investigate this matter and those found wanting to be held accountable. We will engage the National Human Rights Commission as well as the Office of the Inspector General of Police to look into this assault.”

LAMIN NJIE – OPINION: Essa Faal’s entrance borders on bravado but here is the man who will certainly bring Jammeh to justice when he wins… The victims now know who they should vote for

How riveting can it get with less than 100 days to election?

Essa Faal said he felt great when I asked him how he felt as he entered through the back door of the American International University lobby on Friday evening. It looked so.

It will take some time before some Gambians fully get what this man is trying to do here. Essa wanting to run for president is one thing that has divided opinion. The people I saw him with last night think he is the deal but one critic told me he is an opportunist. There are many more who believe he used the TRRC to launch himself to fame.

The last few months and weeks have seen a lot of Gambians express interest in becoming the country’s next leader in December but I don’t really remember anyone who has done so with so much style. But that’s typical Essa.

Yet, Essa took to that podium and declared he will win. With his expensive car collection on display and saying with confidence that he is the best out of the lot, Essa’s entrance into the political fold borders on bravado.

On Friday evening, Essa began his speech by first thanking God. He then turned to man. That is his deceased parents whom he said approved of his political endeavour and his friend James Bahoum who was initially chosen to introduce him to the nation.

But while Essa has not officially unveiled his manifesto, only the not-so-smart will not know this man’s campaign will largely be about victims of former President Yahya Jammeh.

“There is one very important issue that is very dear to my heart. For 22 years, from 1994 to 2017, Gambians suffered. There are too many victims. I would make it a crusade to ensure justice for the victims. I know it would come with a price but justice would be done,” Essa said about the victims.

Jammeh did a lot of bad things and if there is one person who can truly bring him to account, it’s Essa. I want the victims to know this.

And if APRC contingent are jittery about UDP going after Jammeh, they should reconsider their stance. Essa is the man to be worried about.

‘Let’s call a spade a spade’: Essa Faal says least educated have never developed a country

0

Essa Faal insisted on Friday evening he doesn’t know of a country in the world developed by the least educated.

Mr Faal while formally announcing his plan to run for the December presidential election said it was time for Gambians who are educated enough to be leaders.

Mr Faal said: “Politics and leadership has for the longest time been the reserve for those who are not very successful in our society and let’s call a spade a spade. Let us not maslaha the truth, those days should be over. That is one of the reasons why we are lagging behind. Let’s end the maslaha of the truth.

“I don’t know a country in the world which has been developed by the least educated in that society. Do you know of any? Our constitution says O Levels [for presidency]. I wonder why we should bring the bar so level.

“Well, perhaps the previous occupants of those offices did not have any better qualification, so we were stuck with that. We choose the not-so-educated and the not-so-accomplished to be our leaders.”

President Barrow declares victory and warns opponents they would be throwing away money if they invest it in the December election

0

President Adama Barrow warned his opponents against investing their money into a futile venture referring to the December election – as he declares he has won already.

At a huge rally in Banjul on Friday evening attended by thousands of Gambian youth, the president warned that any opponent who has already invested in the election should know he has just squandered his money.

The president said: “Except one lives in denial but everything [victory] is clear today. But you have people who are on the left and you have those who are on the right side in my government. But on the 4th of December, the sheep and the goats will stop living in the same house. That’s Gambia will know peace since everyone will keep quiet.

“Anyone who is President Barrow’s opposition should know we have decided the election already. In case there is someone who gave your 100,000 dollars [on the hope you’re going to win], you might as well save the money and use it to take care of your family. Because if you have invested the money into a business vis-a-vis this election, then you should know you have lost that.”

Essa Faal says his deceased parents approved of his presidency bid and then declares Gambia is at a crossroads as he begins speaking at announcement event

0

Essa Faal revealed on Friday evening his late parents granted him permission to embark on his presidency journey – and he has declared that The Gambia is at a crossroads.

Mr Faal has begun speaking at his political event to announce his intention of running for Office of President in the December 4 election.

“Our beloved Gambia is at a serious crossroads. The country is regressing and our people are suffering,” Mr Faal told a packed American International University auditorium.

Senegal army chief General Cheikh Wade meets President Barrow

0

President Adama Barrow received the Senegalese Chief of Defence Staff General Cheikh Wade and other senior Senegalese Military officials at the State House in Banjul.

The president met the top military leader on Friday.

State House said: “Following his audience with President Barrow, General Wade stated that he is in The Gambia to meet with the Senegalese ECOMIG contingent, noting that the peace and security of The Gambia and Senegal is one of the most essential components in the two sisterly nations’ relations.

“General Wade commended President Barrow for taking the time to meet with him and his delegation, adding The Gambia-Senegal bond is growing stronger.

UDP leader Darboe’s statement at the launch of the party’s 5-Point Agenda and Official Website

0

Good morning and welcome to the official launch of the United Democratic Party 2021 Manifesto; 5-Point Agenda and Official Website.

Monday August 23rd, 2021 marked the 25thAnniversary of the founding of the United Democratic Party (UDP). Advisedly we chose today’s occasion for the unveiling of our Manifesto for the Presidential Elections which is less than 100 days from today.

This is a significant milestone in the history of our great Party. It is therefore fitting to share the UDP story with the younger generation and first-time voters in the hope that our story will inspire them to consider service to the Gambia our Homeland as the greatest act of patriotism.

One of the first actions of the Military Junta following the Coup D’etat of July 22nd 1994, was to suspend all political activities in the country. Effectively the suspension silenced the PPP, the NCP, GPP and PDOIS, all political parties of the first republic. The suspension of political activities left the AFPRC as the lone actor in the political arena until in or about August 1996.

In 1996 the ban on and suspension of political activities was lifted but this was followed by the banning of the leaders of the first republic politicians except PDOIS. And except PDOIS the then existing political parties were proscribed. The banned politicians and their proscribed parties were perceived to be the greatest threats to Yahya Jammeh’s intended self-perpetuating rule.

Negotiations for the formation of a new party began in the middle of July1996 and lasted for almost six weeks. The maiden meeting took place in the residence of Mr. Sidia Sagnia of blessed memory. He later became the first Senior Administrative Secretary of the UDP. This meeting was attended by representatives of the three parties namely: PPP, NCP and GPP and amongst them Hon. Kebba Tamba Jammeh, Mr. Sidia Sagnia, Hon. Landing Jallow Sanneh, Alhaji Jobe Kanteh, Alhaji Ansunding Keita Hon. Bemba Tambedou, Mr. Femi Peters, and Alhaji Amadou Cora.

That first meeting was on a Saturday evening shrouded in great secrecy. This was despite the lifting of the ban on political activities, as it was still dangerous to openly show the soldiers, turned politicians, that there were people who were not prepared to tow their line.

That maiden meeting led to a broad consensus for the creation of a strong political force to be composed of supporters of the three parties mentioned above.

The resolution adopted at the maiden meeting to create a progressive democratic movement that all the three parties subscribed to was ratified by the executive members of the respective parties. That done the way was clear for the next step that is the identification of a leader of the party to be formed.

The search for a leader necessitated the drawing up of a list of potential candidates of eight people. This list was debated and shortlisted down to three. The first and second listed candidates quickly declined to accept the proposal and the choice now fell on the third listed who was out of the country at the time. The rest as they say is history.

Today I stand here before you with mixed feelings: humility and gratitude for the honour and trust the founding fathers and shall I say mothers of UDP bestowed on me, to lead our people to build a prosperous and democratic republic. But on the other hand, I am filled with sadness and regrets that most of the people among them Assan Musa Camara, Cherno Fofana, Alhaji Dembo Tunkara, Aja, Mama Galleh Ceesay, Alhaji Ansumana Dibba, Sam Sillah, Yaya Jallow, Sidia Sagnia, Okutta Thomas, Christian Davies, Femi Peters. Alhaji Mustapha Joof, Sana Yeye Bojang, Mass Jobe, Hon. Kebba Tamba Jammeh, Alhaji Landing Jallow Sanneh, Alh. Ebrima Pesseh Njie, Alhaji Landing Dado Jatta, Momodou G Jallow, Alhaji Sir Alieu Sulayman Jack, Alhaji Karamo Touray, Aji Jabanding Drammeh, Aji Fatou Secka Seckom, Aji Anta Samba, Aja Horeja Ndure, Aja Sarjo Kunjang Sanneh, Burama Drammeh, Aja Mammy Sarr, Aja Khaddy Mambureh, Alhaji Karamo Fatty, Alhaji Suntu Darboe, Aja Kunda Camara, Ya Sally Makalo, Sulayman Narr Sonko Hon. Abou Karamba Kassama, Hon Buba Samura, Hon Babanding Daffeh, Solo Sandeng, Solo Kuruma, Lang Marong, Shyngle Nyassi, Hon. Fakebba Colley, Pa Kabba Sanneh, Aja Nyaha Ndow, Alhaji Amba Sey, Lamin Ndambou Dibba, Fa Kebba Colley, Jahey Suso and Amadou Khulay Secka (Gawlo Mansa) have not lived to see the Silver Jubilee of the mass movement they gave birth to 25 years ago.

May I crave your indulgence distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen to kindly stand up and offer a minute of silence prayer in their memory …. Thank you.

Ladies and Gentlemen the circumstances leading to the founding of the UDP made it imperative that we must measure up not only to the demands of a pluralistic political dispensation demanded by the 21st century but must also accept that the old politics and dogmas will now not do. 21st century Gambia needs a new kind of politics that creates the environment for a high energy democracy and a new theory of government that is value adding and economically empowering.

We are experiencing profound climatic changes threatening the life support systems of our planet. We are faced with a raging global pandemic that seems to mutate rapidly and is wreaking havoc on the un-vaccinated.

21st Century Gambia needs a new kind of politics that creates the environment for a high energy democracy and a new theory of government that is value adding and economically empowering the people.

It is within this dynamic context that I am presenting the UDP Vision for the transformation of our nation. Transition our economy away from fossil energy to green and renewable energy sources.

A couple of days ago, the Newspapers reported that 30% or more Gambians have sunk deeper into poverty and are unable to have more than one meal a day. My question then is, what is the effect of this on the pregnant women and lactating mothers? And what about the children and youths who need healthy and nutritious diet to grow and mature into adults?

Ladies and Gentlemen, there have been a lot of work put into and debate on, consideration and reconsideration of our Manifesto, our 5-Point Agenda and our Website. There was excellent team work, consultations, and verifications to get to where we are today.

I thank all the members of the UDP Strategy and Policy Committee and the different sector committees for their tireless efforts. We are pleased to share with you the end product of their hard work and recommendations that have been put together by the said committee.

These recommendations will ensure that government prioritises Human Capital Development as this will help improve the quality of lives and livelihoods of Gambians.

Our 5-Point Agenda focuses on key priorities that a UDP Government will seriously address. It is a summary version of the various sector policies we have committed to in our manifesto on our website.

We invited you all here to provide you with an opportunity to have first-hand knowledge of our ideas and ask questions about what UDP plans to offer Gambians. We will be more than pleased to respond to your questions.

In the meantime, we take this opportunity to thank you all for accepting our invitation to witness the unveiling of our UDP policies and to formally provide access to you all to the UDP website.

On that note, it gives me great pleasure to officially launch the UDP Manifesto; the UDP 5-Point Agenda and the UDP website. Henceforth, they are all open to the general public.

I thank you all!

Health ministry risks getting sued as health workers refuse to turn up at work causing chaos at Covid test centres

0

Scores of Gambians could not get tested for Covid on Friday after health workers refused to turn up at work.

The health ministry has been sweating over unhappy workers who have been complaining about poor working condition.

Yet, the ministry announced earlier this month that all travellers will now be paying for Covid test at Ecobank.

But there were dramatic scenes at the testing centres in Brusubi and at the Stadium Friday as workers were a no-show.

One person who could not get tested said: “I’m supposed to travel tomorrow but I came for the test only to come to the test centre in Brusubi and be told the doctors are on strike. For me I am going to sue the ministry.”

Modou Njai of the ministry of health could not immediately comment on the issue.

‘You can’t finish a general’: General MA Bah warns APRC executive against plotting against a general

0

General MA Bah has warned APRC top brass against plotting against him telling them: ‘you can’t finish a general’.

Speaking in an audio message that has gone viral, General Bah who served as Jammeh’s last interior minister complained about APRC executive’s move to go into an alliance with NPP.

General Bah said: “If they they think they silenced MA Bah and they have gotten rid of MA from APRC, I can tell you MA Bah has not gone anywhere. If this was your plan, I can tell you it’s unfortunate you have not succeeded and you will not succeed. You have always been saying we do not like Yahya Jammeh and it’s you people who like him.

“A lot of things have been said which led me to sit back and watch you people. But all Gambians now know your plan. Those of you who thought you have finished MA Bah, go and sit down in peace. You can’t finish a general. You cannot take this party and mortgage it.

“Your plans have failed. Rambo Jatta you’re dealing with General MA Bah. I can assure you you have failed miserably and you will live to regret. What I want to emphasize is that I General MA Bah the former interior minister of Yahya Jammeh and the last interior minister of Yahya Jammeh is saying there are instructions: APRC is not going into alliance with any political party.”

NPP braces for 20,000-man youth rally, Seedy Njie explains basis for the massive gathering

0

National People’s Party members are gearing up for a massive rally involving Gambian youth in Banjul, KM and WCR.

The president’s party has been working its way to the top since its launch at the start of this year.

The 20,000 youth rally scheduled for Friday is one of many big activities the party has arranged amid the December presidential election.

NPP topshot Seedy Njie told The Fatu Network on Thursday: “The national youth wing of the NPP will organise a 20,000 youth rally at The Arch 22 tomorrow. The objective is to show to the whole world that majority of the young people of this country are behind the president and they appreciate his intervention and his strive in youth empowerment and youth employment and he’s being very tolerant and democratic as a leader and that his peaceful nature is second to none and they will return him to power on the 4th of December with a landslide victory.

“His intervention in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, health, water and sanitation as well as youth employment and employability and his commitment to the cause of the young people of this country. They want to return a motion of gratitude to him. That is why 20,000 youths will be here tomorrow, all the NPP people and all NPP supporters and membership in the country are notified. Another 10,000 political rally in Foni Bondali will take place on Saturday.”

Kudos to the NAMs and the President for the Access to Information Act

By Madi Jobarteh

The passing of the Access to Information Bill by the National Assembly and its signing into law by the President marks one of the most significant democratic gains registered by the new Government since 2017. With this law, the Gambia has now joined 10 other west African countries that have all created this law. This is indeed a significant democratic achievement for which the National Assembly and the President deserve the utmost commendation. I hope the Government will waste no time but to go ahead to urgently establish the Information Commission and ensure the full implementation of the Act.

Access to Information (ATI) or Freedom Information (FOI) law, also called Sunshine Law, is one of the most instrumental tools necessary to strengthen democracy, good governance and development. It is a law that recognizes and guarantees the right of citizens to access information that is in the custody of public institutions or even private companies or entities which utilize public resources or deliver public services.

To ensure public access to information, the law requires either that public authorities proactively publish information about their activities or members of the public can request information from public authorities, or both. It is pertinent that citizens and the Government bear in mind the issue of proactive disclosure by public authorities to highlight the obligation of public institutions to share information even before citizens request such information. This is provided for in the Act.

It is important to also bear in mind that the law does not state that every information shall be disclosed or provided to citizens. Rather, it has indeed exempted certain information from disclosure so as to protect the privacy of individuals as well as protect information whose disclosure may undermine the country’s security, economy and other vital interests. The procedure for the request and disclosure of information is however quite explicit as to prevent any doubts.

Public officials particularly must be educated to better understand and appreciate the value of freedom of information law as a tool that can only enhance their professionalism, efficiency and effectiveness in delivering public services. Therefore, public officials must recognize first and foremost, that the sovereignty of the Gambia resides in the people of the Gambia; that public institutions derive their authority from the people and perform their duty for the people. This is the language of the Constitution which provides the rationale and the obligation for public institutions to enforce this law.

Secondly, public officials must know that the Government receives public resources from the taxes that citizens pay and the loans and grants it receives on behalf of the people. The Government engages with other countries in the name of, and on behalf of the people. Citizens, businesses, organizations and institutions register, apply and share information with public officials every day. From birth to death, a citizen gives a lot of personal information to public institutions. Hence public officials must know that the information generated in the course of their work does not belong to them, rather these pieces of information are public properties that must be protected, and shared with the public according to the law.

Now that there is the Access to Information Act, let all citizens familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Act, and make use of it in their own interest. The benefits of this law are that it sheds light on the work of the Government hence it is useful in preventing and combating corruption, abuse of office and poor performance by public institutions and officials. Without citizens making use of the law, it will be rendered useless.

The Act has provided for the creation of an Information Commission to oversee the enforcement of this law. It has provided that within 18 months of the coming into force of this law, public institutions should provide an operational plan to the Commission stating how they will implement this law. From the President’s Facebook page, this law came into being on 25 August 2021, hence on or before 25 February 2023, all public institutions should provide their operational plans to the Information Commission. Let’s track and monitor them.

The Access to Information Act is not for only journalists and civil society. This law is for all Gambian citizens. Let us utilize this law and make sure that the Gambia Government is open. Freedom of information is a fundamental human right that is guaranteed by the Constitution. It is one of the first rights expressed by the UN General Assembly in 1946 as necessary and instrumental for all other rights.

While we commend the Gambia Government and the National Assembly, it is now incumbent on each and every citizen to make use of the law as well as demand that public institutions re-organize themselves in order to better and fully implement this law.

Essa Faal to announce presidency bid Friday

0

Essa Faal will announce his bid for the presidency on Friday in a huge move by the famous lawyer.

Mr Faal served as TRRC’s lead attorney in its probe into the human rights violations and abuses that occurred during former President Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year-old.

Rumours have been rampant of the lawyer now planning to seek the highest office in the land – and The Standard broke the news on Thursday Mr Faal will announce his presidency bid on Friday.

When contacted on the issue, Mr Faal simply said: “”God willing we are going to announce tomorrow.”

Darboe warns it will be ‘terrible’ if President Barrow win re-election

0

UDP leader Ousainou Darboe has warned that it will be terrible if President Adama Barrow wins re-election.

Darboe and his political son President Barrow have been at a bitter political war since their fall-out in 2019.

While meeting with Pa Manneh who came to join UDP earlier this week, Mr Darboe said: “It will be terrible if Adama Barrow takes this country again. Because the things happening and the signs we have seen…

“It’s the polarisation of the country we have seen. Adama never says anything that will unify the nation.”

Darboe and Prsident Barrow fell out in 2019 after the president accused him of sabotaging his government.

The debate: Find out the lies and the facts by the women leaders

0

By Bulli Sowe

I was keenly following the Political debate on women, Youth and children by the four female representatives from 4 political parties. Here are some of the comments that I fact-checked in realtime.

YA KUMBA JAITEH, UDP.

-1. The UDP has the highest capacity of personnel

FACT-CHECK: There’s no such data that the UDP has the highest capacity of personnel than any other political party. So it’s mere speculation and FALSE and not backed by any official data. .

2. As a political party the UDP has strong stance and zero tolerance to violence against women and girls

FACT CHECK : That could be true but back in July 2020 a supporter of the UDP who happens to be a woman Binta Darboe was severely beaten by another supporter of the UDP and the party never issued any official statement condemning this act.

3. A UDP government will rely on agriculture for prime investment

FACT-CHECK : There’s no such point in thing as “relying on agriculture for prime investment “in the UDP manifesto. And she never tell us how are they gonna pull up such a bold investment.

4. We will ensure implementation of international laws particularly relating to Gender Base Violence

FACT-CHECK : The Gambia is already a signatory to most international organisations. The legal system in The Gambia requires that Treaties ratified by The Gambia are domesticated before they can become part of The Laws of The Gambia. The provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women have been domesticated through the Women’s Act 2010. The Gambia has also enacted the Sexual Offences Act 2013 and the Domestic Violence Act, 2013. These have been implemented since then.

5. “FGM is already criminalised in the Gambia”

FACT-CHECK : In 2015, a law was passed through an Act of National Assembly to amend the Women’s Act, 2010 to cater for an anti-FGM legal provision. This was referred to as the Women’s Amendment Act, 2015. The Act under Section 32A(1) clearly stipulates the prohibition and punishment for FGM in The Gambia. This implies that practicing FGM in The Gambia is illegal and therefore a crime. So she’s right.

6. The APRC government abused funds that were meant for the university

FACT-CHECK : The APRC government helped established the university of the Gambia in 1999 through an extension program and since then they’ve invested alot in expanding the university in terms of infrastructure and personnel. There’s no such record that the APRC government misused funds meant for the university. It’s FALSE.

YAMUNDOW FAYE, GDC

1. GDC will not rely government but also grassroots like the local government.

FACT-CHECK : In the Gambia we have the Central government and the local government. The local government is an entity of the central government. An Act of the National assembly provide for the establishment of ward councils, municipalities and area councils (which are together referred to as local government authorities), and the district in which each have jurisdiction.

2. We are in a country where people are Muslims

FACT-CHECK : Approximately 95.7 percent of the population is Muslim but the Christian community makes up 4.2 percent of the population. So it is a fallacy to refer the Gambia as ” country where people are Muslims “. We have Christians as well.

3. Women cannot live without men and men cannot go without women “.

FACT-CHECK : No human beings ever complete one another. They compliment one another. You can always live without another person. It’s whether you want to or not, that matters. Humans tend to crave companionship and sex. Straight humans tent to be attracted to humans of the opposite gender. It’s not about a woman can live without a man or a man can live without a woman. Because it is leading only to dependency in this materialistic world. Definitely! They can. We are born alone, we die alone, then what is there so difficult to live alone?

4. GDC has built roads, boreholes, bridges and health centres

FACT-CHECK : It is true that the GDC has has given back to communities in the form of boreholes, road construction and over pass bridges and even medical items to health centres but there’s no record of the Gambia Democratic Congress built any health centre in the country.

5. There’s an act against abuse of women

FACT-CHECK : The Domestic Violence Act was passed by the National Assembly on the 17 December 2013 and assented to by the President on 30 December 2013. She’s right.

Civil society boss John Charles Njie has reacted following President Adama Barrow assenting to the Access to Information Bill on Wednesday.

“We hope that all individuals entrusted with the role of information dissemination will endeavour to dutifully uphold the rule of law,” Mr Njie said while reacting to the development.

President Adama Barrow signed the right to information law on Wednesday and then declared he delivered on a campaign pledge.

Gambians particularly members of the media have been pushing for a law that would make it compulsory for public officials to make information accessible to citizens when they want it.

Parliament last month passed the law after years of campaign by civil society advocates.

The president said on Wednesday: “Today, I delivered on a campaign pledge. The Right to Information Bill was signed into law. My Government is devoted to transparency and accountability, and I believe that every citizen has the right to information.”
