THE BLOW BACK EFFECTS OF THE “AXE GRINDING DRAFT CONSTITUTION”

0

By: Ousainou Mbenga

On January 17, 1893 Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii characterized the imposed U.S constitution upon the indigenous Hawaiian people as the “bayonet constitution”, which led to the subsequent overthrow of her queendom. The “bayonet constitution” laid the groundwork for the theft of the Hawaiian archipelago, first as an annexed territory, and ultimately, into a state within the U.S imperialist empire. Such aggressions have been the representation of constitutions in colonies up to the present-day neo-colonies.

In the case of the Gambia, the 2020 draft constitution crafted by the Constitution Review Commission (CRC), was the axe grinding agenda of the dismembered Barrow / UDP hegemony against the 2016 coalition and its ultimate destruction and betrayal of the Gambian masses. The United Democratic Party (UDP) leadership was at the helm of all the important government appointees and the commissions inaugurated to guide the beginning of the sham and bogus “New Gambia”. The CRC might have been of “good intentions”, but the “road to hell is paved with good intentions”, as the fate of their draft constitution was meted out at the not-so “National Assembly”. The current political manifestations in the country represent the blow back of UDP’s intentions for hegemony.

And just in passing, the other inaugurated commission, the Janneh Commission was on the opposite pole to “good intentions”. It turned out to be the most shameful exercise of tracking and exposing the trail of looting by the Jammeh regime’s 22 year tyranny and in the end, the same courts that were given the “constitutional authority” by the Barrow/UDP regime to investigate, declared that “they don’t have the mandate to enforce or execute”the findings in their report. This despicable act proves our contention that, “the courts are the highest expressions of politics”. According to the Janneh commission, over 1 Billion Dalasi was allegedly recovered in monies not including other unreported assets. So, where are all these resources kept and who has access to them? To put it bluntly, the courts have undoubtedly given Barrow and his National People’s Party (NPP) easy access to campaign money. Now, the Barrow regime, the inherited carbon copy of the criminal Jammeh regime, can sink its fangs into the stolen resources of the country for his campaign while telling the masses that follow him on the dusty trails to stay home, not to spread the COVID-19.

For the moment, let us allow the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) to run its rigmarole course. But hold not your breath to great expectations from the TRRC, because the same courts that cannot“enforce or execute” onthe findings of the Janneh Commission are the same courts that will make a determination on the findings of the TRRC.

Back to the “supreme law of the land”, the constitution. It is important for the masses of our people, who have always been mere spectators in the process of crafting this document, to have a profound understanding of the recent and unprecedented nation-wide and “diaspora” consultation initiated by the CRC. The outcome of the consultations has proved to be the historic “illusions of inclusion” of the masses in the so-called “democratic process”.How else can this constitution be characterized other than a “toilet paper”for the impotent ruling class across the African continent? The history of bourgeoise constitutions gives the masses the illusions of inclusion in the decision-making process, when voting them into office is the only action they allow you to participate in. The “people’s will must prevail” will remain a myth under these neocolonial constitutions.

The masses of our people must understand that every neocolonial constitution was “plagiarized”from the colonialist’s constitutions of the Greek, British and American empires. The slogan: “For the people, by the people” is an illusion. The oppressed masses have never been represented by constitutions. The oppressed masses have historically been relegated as canon-fodder voters for unscrupulous politicians and their law makers. Once in office, you remain in the same wretched conditions of poverty until the next election cycle. Until we come to the necessary understanding that these “toilet paper constitutions” are crafted to maintain the neocolonial borders of false sovereignty, we will forever remain as fodder for these blood sucker presidents and their lackeys. Until we carry the African revolution to its logical conclusion, and craft the real people’s constitution, we will continue to make political storms that blow down the wrong trees.

Don’t lose any sleep or shed “crocodile tears” over these theatrics at the National Assembly that have been bought and sold by the Barrow regime. These colonialists in black faceswill always betray you. All the signs of betrayal are written on the wall that we are on our own, that we cannot rely on these parasites to solve our problems. The New Gambia is a sham, it will never happen under the Barrow regime, neither under his past and present allies. Notwithstanding the setbacks since December 2, 2016, we must set ourselves up for a revolutionary comeback. Only revolutionary politics can save our beloved Gambia from the hungry wolves of the Barrow regime and its enablers.

Let us build the revolutionary alternative against neocolonialism and establish the OPPOSITION that Jammeh daringly claim he never had in the Gambia. And Barrow’s actions are, clearly, signs of a missing viable opposition.

Background of Rawlings

Jerry John Rawlings was born in Accra on 22nd June 1947, to a Ghanaian mother from Dzelukope, near Keta, in the Volta Region, and a Scottish father.

He was educated at Achimota School where he obtained his General Certificate of Education ‘O’ Level in 1966.

He enlisted as a Flight Cadet in the Ghana Air Force in August 1967, and was subsequently selected for officer cadet training at the Ghana Military Academy and Training School, Teshie, in Accra.

In March 1968, he was posted to Takoradi in the Western Region to continue his course.

During his service with the Ghana Air Force, he witnessed the deterioration of discipline and morale, reflecting the corruption of the regime of the Supreme Military Council (SMC) at that time.

As promotion brought him into contact with the privileged classes and their social values, his awareness of the injustices in society was sharpened.

He was thus regarded with some unease by the SMC. He read widely and discussed social and political ideas with a growing circle of like-minded friends and colleagues.

On May 28, 1979, Flt.-Lt. Rawlings, together with six others, appeared before a General Court Martial in Accra, charged with leading a mutiny of junior officers and men of the Ghana Armed Forces on 15th May, 1979. The ranks of the Armed Forces, in particular, expressed deep sympathy with his stated aims. When he was scheduled for another court appearance on 4th June, 1979, Flt.-Lt. Rawlings was sprung from custody. With the support of both military and civilians, he led a revolt, which decisively ousted the Supreme Military Council from office and brought the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) into being.

The AFRC, under the chairmanship of Flt.Lt. Rawlings carried out a “house-cleaning exercise” aimed at purging the Armed Forces and society at large of corruption and graft as well as restoring a sense of moral responsibility and the principles of accountability and probity in public life.

Meanwhile, following the programme already set in motion before the 4th June Uprising for civilian administration, general elections were held.

On 24th September 1979, the AFRC handed over to the civilian Government of the People’s National Party (PNP) under President Hilla Limann.

On 31st December 1981, Flt. Lt. Rawlings led a section of the Armed Forces to overthrow the PNP administration. A Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), composed of both civilian and military members, was established, with Flt-Lt. J.J. Rawlings as the Chairman.

His interests include reading, building model aircraft, horse-riding and swimming. He is married to Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings with whom he has four children – three girls and a boy.

Flt-Lt. Rawlings ceased to be a member of the Ghana Armed Forces with effect from September 14, 1992. He formed the National Democratic Congress, which contested and won the 1992 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. He and the party again won the 1996 elections.

His term of office ended in the year 2000.

He is the joint recipient of the 1993 World Hunger Prize. He holds an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree from Medgar Evers College, City University of New York and Lincoln University Doctorate Degree for Diplomacy and Development.

0

Wednesday marks 25 years since the November 11, 1994 execution of eleven officers of the army after they were accused of plotting a counter coup against the new junta government of Yahya Jammeh.

Former Yundum barracks commander Basirou Barrow was killed alongside at least 10 others following their arrest over a suspected coup plot.

In April last year, the junta’s vice president Sana Sabally took responsibility for the killings telling the TRRC ‘I’m the commander on the ground and I gave the orders’. Some were shot and killed in either at Yundum Barracks or Fajara Barracks shortly after their arrest.

“The rest of the group, when we came back the next day, we got the ringleaders, we took them to the Brikama range, not exactly at the Brikama range but the forest and we shot them and brought them back to Yundum Barracks for burial,” Sabally told the TRRC.

0

And speaking at the NPP’s victory celebration in Banjul on Monday, Dou Sanno said: “But His Excellency, I want to tell you they (people of Niamina) said they have two corpses there. Thee corpses are not human corpses but these corpses are parties.

Gambians in Southeast Asia get no response from foreign ministry over their plea for embassy not to be closed

0

Gambians in Southeast Asia have told The Fatu Network the ministry of foreign affairs has shown it doesn’t care about the welfare of Gambians abroad.

Gambians living in South East Asia early September this year wrote to the ministry of foreign affairs after learning the ministry was contemplating closing the only Gambian embassy in Southeast Asia, in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

“This decision made by our current government was brought to our attention when standard Newspaper published it on the 13th of July 2020. In the Newspaper article, it is reported that the government’s only plan of shutting down this mission was as a result of financial constraints and also downsizing diplomatic services for effectiveness in operational costs,” the Gambians said in their letter shared with The Fatu Network.

“In reference to the above report, we write to appeal to Gambia government to reconsider their decision made on the closure of The Gambian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The reason being, we strongly believed that closing the embassy will cause unreasonable detriments to many students and all other Gambians living in the region. The mission is centered in a strategic location and it is of great significance to the government and more importantly, to the citizens living in Southeast Asia. It is this mission that every Gambian rush to when they are plunged into trials and tribulations. We have undoubtedly recognized the services that the mission is rendering to us,” they told the minister of foreign affairs.

On September 14, the community received an email from a female foreign ministry official acknowledging receipt of the letter. They have not received any response from the ministry since then.

One Gambian student in Southeast Asia told The Fatu Network: “It shows they don’t care about our welfare. For two months they have not even bothered to respond to our letter.

“If at all they are not satisfied with the officials they have at the embassy, they can appoint officials they think can do the job but closing this embassy is a bad idea.”

GDC gives motorcycle to women of Papa, the village where GDC polled only 80 votes to NPP 680

0

By Sarjo Brito

The Gambia Democratic Congress on Tuesday, November 10th donated a D125, 000 Huasha motorcycle to the women of Papa village in Niamina West. The donation was a campaign promise during the Niamina West by-elections to which the Gambia Democratic Congress lost to the NPP.

The women of Papa village according to GDC officials, pleaded with GDC leader Mamma Kandeh during their Niamina West by-election campaign to help them with transport as they struggle to find cars, if any at all to transport them to hospital during childbirth and other medical emergencies. Only 80 people in Papa however voted for GDC in the by-election compared with NPP’s 680.

Handing over the motorcycle to the GDC Chairman of Papa Village, Mama Kandeh said GDC will continue its style of politics, which is to continue helping the masses in areas that are most needed.

“We did not bring this for only the women. It is for anyone who needs it irrespective of their political affiliations. We the GDC have nothing to offer to people individually but we will continue to support communities. We could have done this during the time of election but no because whatever we do, we do it for the people,” Kandeh said.

Ousman Jallow, GDC Chairman in Papa Village said Kandeh promised them and that promise has been fulfilled today. The chairman reiterated his community’s support to Kandeh and praised the GDC leader for his sense of humanity.

GDC National Youth President MC Cham Jr was also at the handing over ceremony and he had this to say:

“This is nothing new to the GDC. When we go to communities and promise them during campaigns, we make sure to go back and fulfil them, whether we win or not. We have many politicians who go around promising people during elections and once they get what they want, it is a done deal for them. GDC is stronger today more than ever despite our lost in Niamina West. We will not abandon the constituency just because we lost the elections,” Cham said.
