President Adama Barrow has withdrawn the appointment of Oreme Joiner as deputy chairperson of Independent Electoral Commission.
The Fatu Network confirmed on Tuesday the presidency wrote to the IEC last week informing it of the hiring of a fresh hand in former Trust Bank top official Oreme Joiner.
A huge public outcry erupted on Tuesday as news of Joiner’s appointment emerged – amid reports he is a member of the National People’s Party.
The chairman of NPP Banjul Bubacarr Gaye told The Fatu Network Oreme Joiner was indeed a members of his executive but was removed from the executive amid his appointment to the IEC.
But government spokesperson Ebrima Sankareh in a statement on Tuesday evening said Joiner’s appointment has been rescinded by President Barrow in ‘the wake of emerging evidence’ which contradicts his appointment.
It preceded condemnation by the UDP who in a statement branded it illegal.
