Meet Gambia’s Cany Jobe; One of Africa’s Most Inspirational Female Energy Executives

Director of Exploration at the Gambia National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Cany Jobe has made the 2021 Power List, a list that features 50 of Africa’s most inspirational female executives.

Cany was nominated and selected for the 2021 power list by Africa Oil Week and Lean in Energy. The list recognises the exceptional work of Pan -African female leaders in energy from Morocco to Cape Town, from Manager to Minister – all of whom are working and motivating others across the African energy sector.

There has never been a more important time to drive diversity and inclusion awareness into the sector, ensuring women continue to have a voice and opinion in shaping this evolving industry.

Cany is a dedicated and strategic Petroleum Engineer with a passion for cleaner and renewable energy technologies who has worked on energy projects in West Africa, South America, East Asia and Australia over the past 14 years.

Her favourite project is the key role she played in a multidisciplinary team which was involved with investigating the optimum development strategy for the offshore Browse LNG field in Australia and which consisted of four divisions (Reservoir engineering team, Well completions and Engineering team, Facilities team and Economic team).

She holds a B.Sc. in Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering from the National Taipei University of Technology (Taiwan), a Master of Engineering in Oil & Gas from the University of Western Australia (Australia) and an Accredited Masters in International Project Management from the Glasgow Caledonian University (Scotland).

Currently, she works as Director of Exploration at GNPC where she advises the government on oil and gas exploration projects and is a member of the national team that structures, negotiates and oversees the implementation of high-value contracts. She has previously served as Board Secretary and Head of Administration, encompassing Procurement and IT.

An activist at heart, she advocates for and champions diversity and women advancement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and energy at both national and international levels and is a public speaker and panelist at women, leadership, energy, regional collaboration and STEM forums, conferences and summits worldwide.

She is particularly passionate about institution and nation-building, quality education, women in stem, women in leadership, elimination of harmful practices against women and economic equality.

She is a 35-year-old mother of two handsome boys who she is raising as gender champions and equity advocates. She has been happily married for 12 years.

Cany Jobe is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the Association of Project Managers and is an alumnus and recipient of Australia Development Awards, Mining for Development, Commonwealth Awards, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Taiwan Best Student Excellence Award and Trust Bank Gambia Millennium Excellence Award.
