Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, on Monday 25th April 2022 told lawmakers that everyone in the assembly is qualified by law to serve in any capacity in all the committees.
The Speaker was responding to some assembly members who described certain selected committee chairpersons as “unqualified and incompetent” to serve in those capacities, taking into consideration their academic and experience backgrounds.
“Every national assembly member in this parliament is qualified to serve as a chair or member of any committee,” said Hon. Jatta.
He emphasized lawmakers should understand that all members are qualified to serve because they are legally in parliament representing their people.
The Speaker however stated that it is now left with parliament to decide who is going to serve in a given capacity.
He advised assembly members to desist from describing colleague members as unqualified and incompetent.
