SAINEY DARBOE – BOOK REVIEW: ‘Never doubt…’

0

From the title of the book,’Never Doubt’…one might be forgiven for nurturing aspirations of living by its meaning.

But the experiences of the man who co-founded Gunjur-Marlborough link as narrated in his 432 page autobiography do not exactly bring the opposite of doubt to mind.

Born in the small town of Marlborough from a long line of doctors who made it to Guinness Book of records, the younger Nick Maurice made choices that would have filled lesser people with doubt and even question his sanity.

Through his work, he would go on to serve as director of Commonwealth organization Building International Links for Development(BUILD), getting awarded OBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and building close relationships with anti-apartheid heroes like Desmond Tutu and Joel Joffe who was part of defense team for Nelson Mandela at the Rivonia trial, among others.

But it’s not always been smooth-sailing for Nick Maurice. He was sent to boarding school at the age of 8 away from his parents with accompanying consequences.

Young Nick was a reluctant pupil and would hang onto the railings in his bid to avoid going to school. His fingers had to be pried loose to take him to school.

At the age of 14, he was victim of abuse that impacted his personal development. His Housemaster Billy Lamb who was engaged to a dame commenced touching him inappropriately to satisfy his desires.

The other students, he found out, were undergoing a similar experience. The behavior was reported to authorities. The perpetrator Mr. Lamb would shoot himself and his dog to death to avoid the rigors of justice. However, Nick looks back on the experience without any lingering bitterness.

“I can honestly say that I don’t think it had any measurable impact on me and would suggest that this was because firstly, I didn’t at the time appreciate that there was anything wrong in what was being done to me, after all he was my respected Housemaster…”,he wrote of the experience while wondering whether with all the publicity and feverish interest in such cases nowadays we should not ask the question about the possible impact of that publicity on the victims of abuse.

Though he felt compelled to follow in his father’s footsteps in medical practice, Nick’s academic record was by no means stellar. He failed three ‘A’ levels in Physics, Chemistry and Biology which he took at his father’s instruction. This disappointment would have put the kibosh on academic aspirations for lesser-willed people. But Nick moved on from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm which would eventually pay off.

At the age of 18, he would work for a year with Voluntary Service Overseas in Sokode in Togo. His services as an unqualified teacher were extremely valued by the community and he made lasting friendships. He stayed in the compound of a local chief whose generosity he was grateful for, but disapproved of his use of corporal punishment by caining his kids for infractions.

During his stint, he had an opportunity to meet the first president of Togo Christopher Olympio who was later assasinated. On 13 January 1963 Olympio was overthrown and killed in a coup d’état led by army non-commissioned officers dissatisfied with conditions following their discharge from the French army.

Upon return home, he would get into college and start medical training which he left with one year to go in order to work as a volunteer in Papua New Guinea.

Working in and from mount Hagen hospital in PNG in the Western Highlands where he helped the sick while accumulating hands-on medical experience is an experience he found fulfilling. He would make similar trips to Nepal through Britain Nepal Medical Trust,Cambodia and Calais.

His return to Marlborough in 1980 would coincide with the publication of the Brandt report ‘North-South-A Programme for Survival’, led by the charismatic former chancellor of West Germany.

The Brandt report sought to address the widening disparity in wealth between the so-called ‘rich North’ and ‘poor South’. This would lead to the birth of Gunjur Marlborough link in 1982 which involved exchange of people.

In almost forty years of friendship, hundreds of people have exchanged visits between the two communities with lasting impacts in key development areas like education, health and women’s empowerment, among others.

The mutual exchange of people has hit a substantial snag with difficulties of getting visas for young people from Gunjur due to changes in U.K. immigration law.

But Nick continues to work assiduously in collaborating with partners to enhance development in Gunjur. In his characteristic humility and Septuagenarian wisdom, he insists the collaboration with Gunjur is not entirely altruistic nor is it one-way, because both communities benefit from the link.

The autobiography ‘Never Doubt…’ makes for an interesting and inspiring read that oscillates wildly between haha funny to harrowing; with depiction of grim manifestations of human suffering and triumph all at once.

Coronavirus: EU escalates its support to Gambia as delegation announces signature of 2.5 million euros emergency response project

0

The European Union delegation to The Gambia on Monday announced the signature of a EUR 2,500,000 COVID-19 emergency response project.

The project is implemented by a consortium of the Spanish Red Cross, The Gambia Red Cross Society and the Medical Research Council – The Gambia, a statement by the EU delegation to The Gambia said, adding it is coming at a time when the expansion of the COVID-19 pandemic is taking a worrying momentum in The Gambia.

“In this time of crisis we all must play our part and take up responsibility, and so does the European Union”, said EU Ambassador to the Republic of The Gambia, H.E. Attila LAJOS, according to the statement.

It added: “This 18 month-long action will be implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the other actors of the overall response to the COVID-19 crisis in The Gambia. It will encompass sensitisation and community outreach activities, provisions for the strengthening of the national testing capacities and laboratories in general, and purchases of a number of much needed sanitary supplies: personal protective equipment (for health facilities and other key responders); reagents for testing; oxygen delivery kit (incl. concentrators and pulse oximeters); drugs for general treatment/COVID-19 vaccine; lab equipment-Hood, PCR machine, etc; sprayers for disinfection activities; hygiene and sanitation kits; materials for installation of hand washing facilities, etc.

“The action will also cater for the construction of seven infrastructures for safe disposal in different regions of the country and for the rehabilitation of isolation centre in Kuntaur Health Centre.

“Eventually, a specific component of the project is aimed at mitigating the socio-economic consequences of the crisis by providing safety nets to selected vulnerable households.

“The overall focus will be on people living in most vulnerable situations affected by the COVID-19 crisis in The Gambia, particularly women, people living in poverty, and specific marginalized groups such as persons with disabilities, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions.”

Beakanyang calls on police chief to suspend Gorgi Mboob

0

Rights group Beakanyang has called on the Inspector General of Police to suspend Gorgi Mboob over torture claims against the top police officer.

Mr Mboob has been drawing massive flaks after allegations of torture made against him by Ebrima Sanneh, a 26-year-old man from Brikama. Sanneh alleged Mr Mboob attacked him on his private parts while he was being detained at the police anti-crime unit in Bijilo.

Beakanyang in a statement said: “We condemn this act in the strongest term and call on the Inspector General of Police, IGP to launch an independent investigation into the matter.

“Meawnhile, we call on the IGP to suspend Commissioner Mboob with immediate effect until such investigations are concluded.

“As a human rights organization, we find these allegations worrying and remind the police that torture is a serious human rights violation.

“A person who is alleged to have committed a crime is still entitled to enjoy his or her rights and same must be respected.”

West African leaders start virtual summit on Mali crisis

0

By CGTN Africa

West African leaders kicked off a virtual summit on Mali’s deepening political crisis on Monday, officials said, after two efforts at mediation this month ended inconclusively.

Presidents of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which Mali is a member, are discussing ways to defuse tensions between the opposition and President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

“The meeting has started,” a source close to ECOWAS said. A source close to the Malian president confirmed that the talks had begun.

Anti-Keita protests on July 10 spiralled into clashes, leaving 11 dead in the worst bout of political unrest Mali has seen in years.

Keita has been in power since 2013, winning elections in which he posed as national saviour in the face of a regional rebellion.

Since then, the country’s problems have escalated, and anger is flaring.

CA joins UDP in expressing disgust at alleged Gorgi Mboob savagery

0

Citizens’ Alliance has joined UDP in expressing horror over alleged police brutality involving the head of police anti-crime unit Gorgi Mboob.

CA’s statement today read;

In recent weeks, The Gambia has been faced with a significant rise in crime and delinquency. This has provoked a sense of insecurity and an increasing lack of trust in the police.

This crisis of confidence in The Gambia Police Force is reinforced by the growing role of security personnel in security matters and the diminishing role of the state in protecting and safeguarding the citizenry.

This is most evident in the expressed concerns of the public in respect of the case of Ebrima Sanneh, who had to be hospitalized after he was allegedly physically assaulted by the head of the Anti Crime Unit of The Gambia Police Force, Mr. Gorrgi Mboob. Also noteworthy that Mr. Sanneh and his friends had not been convicted of any crimes, or even charged in a competent court of law as required by due process before they were detained and subjected to forced labor – a form of torture.

Equally disturbing is the fact that the statement released by the Police contradicts both the accounts of events narrated by Mr. Sanneh, other eyewitnesses and the account given by Mr. Mboob himself, as reported by several media houses. A culture of accountability and truth is essential in maintaining public confidence in our public institutions.

Citizens’ Alliance condemns, in the strongest terms, the continued violation of citizens’ rights by security forces. We also call on the government to ensure that state security agents are equipped with the character, discipline and training to carry out their oaths of office to protect and serve the citizens. Those found wanting in both the previous and current regime should have no place wearing the uniform.

‘He hit me’: Ebrima Sanneh tells nation Gorgi Mboob hit him on his private part with a hoe as he speaks for first time

0

Ebrima Sanneh has insisted top police officer Gorgi Mboob hit him with a hoe on his private part following an altercation.

The 26-year-old has put the police in a difficult state following his detention and alleged torture at the police anti-crime unit in Bijilo. He alleged the unit’s commander Gorgi Mboob attacked him after he mistakenly took out a plant of corn while weeding on the unit’s farm.

Police have since denied an attack has taken place and Sanneh has broken his silence about the issue.

Below is his statement;

Dear Gambian brothers and sisters I write this press statement to thank you all for your solidarity and messages of support during this tough period. My attention has been brought to a publication from Poliso Magazine social media account titled “False News, in the matter of Ebrima Sanneh’s alleged Torture”. This press release aimed to refute news reports that I was tortured which is actually the fact.

However, the publication also highlighted that “for verification purposes, his [Ebrima Sanneh’s] family can be contacted”. Given the seriousness of this matter I am compelled to put it in writing that I was tortured and that the publication by Poliso Magazine contains numerous inaccuracies which are evidently wrong. It is important to note that Poliso Magazine or the authors of the release did not contact me to get my account of the incident. I am disappointed that the police are quick to jump to conclusions and cover up rather than conduct a proper investigation to get to the facts of the issue.

Firstly, I was at Kanifing Hospital by 5am in the early morning of Saturday 25th July 2020. I was actually arrested around 3am to 4am in the early hours of Friday 24th July 2020. I was arrested from Ice Lounge with almost 30 other people.

All of us were held in one cell and forced to weed grass in the gardens and farm of Anti Crime Unit in Bijilo the next morning. As we continued weeding the grass, I mistakenly felled a corn plant and that’s when Gorgi Mboob attacked me. Gorgi Mboob punched me in the face and then hit me with a hoe on my private part after snatching it from my hand.

I was semi-conscious and left on the field like that in pain for what felt like over 40 to 50 mins without any medical attention. When I got up to urinate, I was in a lot of pain urinating abnormally and discharged what looked like blood. I was then sent back to the cells for further detention.

In fact, I was re-arrested with no warrant or charge around midday of Saturday 25th July 2020 from Kanifing Hospital and dragged back to the Anti-Crime Unit in Bijilo. This time my relatives and friends came to get me and Gorgi Mboob actually pleaded for forgiveness and then I left.

I am currently seeking medical attention as I am in serious pain and request for the public’s continued support and the required space and time to recover physically. I am also requesting that the Police retracts their statement denying my torture. I and my family are currently seeking legal advice.

We appreciate all the support we have been getting and continue to depend on it. For the Gambia our Homeland. We strive and work and pray. That all may live in unity, freedom and peace each day.

UDP takes on the police: Party calls alleged Gorgi Mboob savagery ‘wanton’ cruelty – then lays down the law over what IGP and Interior minister need to do

0

UDP on Sunday called torture claims against anti-crime chief Gorgi Mboob ‘wanton’ cruelty reminiscent of some of the witness testimonies from the TRRC.

Mr Mboob has come under massive condemnation following allegations of torture levelled against him by 26-year-old Ebrima Sanneh. Mr Mboob allegedly beat Sanneh on his genitals while the latter was detained at anti-crime in Bijilo.

Gambia Police Force then on Saturday faced the full fury of a cross-section of Gambians after it insisted the torture never happened.

UDP reacting to the issue in a statement signed by party leader Ousainou Darboe on Sunday said: “The United Democratic Party has observed with utter dismay the conduct of the Gambia Police Force Anti-Crime Unit. That extremely serious allegations of torture and police brutality have been levelled against Mr. GorgI Mboob by Ebrima Sanneh. Mr. Mboob the Head of the Anti-Crime Unit allegedly hit Mr. Sanneh on his genitals leaving him with severe pains without any arrests or investigations. This type of wanton cruelty is reminiscent of some of the witness testimonies from the TRRC.

“The UDP vehemently condemns the alleged acts police brutality, personally meted out by the Head of the Anti-Crime Unit, Mr. Gorgi Mboob in the presence of witnesses thereafter offer an apology to the Victim Mr. Sanneh again in the presence of witnesses. Senior police officers are supposed to protect the citizens from crimes and not be perpetrators of crimes themselves and like any other citizens of the Gambia the GPF is not above the law.

“Therefore, the UDP calls on the IGP & the Hon. Minister of Interior to investigate this matter urgently and thoroughly. As in all cases of serious criminal allegations, the person suspected of committing an offence must be arrested immediately thereafter the Police can determine whether to grant bail or not. Without swift action on the part of the IGP in this matter, the Gambia Police Force will lose any credibility it still has with Gambian people. Without a proper investigation in these serious allegation the Gambia Police Force will damage its reputation further and that the GPF has not significantly changed since the ousting of the dictator in 2016.”

LAMIN NJIE – COMMENT: The president is operating cluelessly about Covid-19… the proof is in lifting of the state of emergency

This is the moment for you to understand President Barrow and his government are clueless about how to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Since March, when this crisis began, this government has received a considerable amount of criticism for the way and manner it is handling the crisis. If not for the dithering for it to close the country’s borders, it is for the healthcare workers getting disaffected because they’re not given all the support or even the terribly executed lockdowns.

The situation has now gotten to scary extent. Daily cases continue to be in the double digits, with doctors and nurses getting infected left, right and centre. It’s all becoming really messed up, and something serious needs doing to prevent coronavirus from running us down.

There have been too many missteps in our coronavirus fightback but the most ridiculous is the lifting of the state of public emergency by the president. If you ask me, it doesn’t make sense.

There is no effort needed for one to know lockdown is one of the best ways to slow a spread of coronavirus. With this, I mean well-implemented lockdowns, not the jumbled ones carried out by our president.

In State House’s statement on Friday, the president scrapped the state of emergency after consultation with health experts and the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Covid-19.

But someone appears not serious here. The president is saying he walked back the SoPE after consulting the health experts – the very same experts who on a daily basis are baying for ‘stringent’ lockdown measures. Just check the experts’ daily situation reports and you will see lockdown is actually No. 1 on their list of recommendations.

Our flailing healthcare system risks collapsing if the country should register a certain high number of cases. And given the fast-and-furious way and manner the virus is spreading, it will only require a well-implemented lockdown.

Rights commission announces investigation into torture claims against anti-crime supremo

0

The National Human Rights Commission said Sunday its attention has been drawn to the ‘disturbing’ news circulating on social media about the alleged serious assault meted out to one Ebrima Sanneh of Brikama by the Commander of the Anti-Crime Unit, Commissioner Goorgie Mboob on Friday 24th July at the Headquarters of the Anti-Crime Unit, leading to grievous bodily harm and hospitalization of the said Ebrima Sanneh.

NHRC said in a statement: “The NHRC condemns all and any acts of police brutality in its strongest terms and wishes to remind the officers of the Anti-Crime Unit, and all security officers, that no one has the right to subject anyone to any form of brutality, torture or inhuman, degrading punishment or other treatment. It is therefore worrying to hear news about police officers, who are required to be the custodians of law and order, allegedly violating the rights of others. The police are to ensure that the rights of all who come into contact with them are respected and protected.

“The 1997 Constitution and other international instruments, to which The Gambia is a party, guarantees fundamental human rights of everyone living in The Gambia, and the Gambia Police Force, as an agent of the State responsible for the maintenance of law and order, is expected to exercise maximum restraint and ensure its actions are legal, necessary and proportionate.

“The NHRC is investigating the said allegations and will recommend the appropriate action to take to make sure that justice is done if it is established that any form of torture was committed.”

Ebrima Sanneh’s family express shock police are denying torture claims against its top commander Gorgi Mboob

0

Ebrima Sanneh’s family have expressed shock at the police’s about-face in the torture of the 26-year-old.

“This is shocking. Gorgi Mboob together with his deputy begged for forgiveness and this was inside their investigation room at the anti-crime there. He then gave us D1000 which Ebrima said he will not touch,” Ebrima’s aunt said as she reacted to the police’s statement Saturday evening.

The police have come under fire after reports anti-crime supremo Gorgi Mboob allegedly beat Ebrima Sanneh while he was detained at anti-crime. The incident allegedly happened on Friday; a team of police officers led by SO Sarr then escorted Sanneh to Kanifing Hospital on Friday after he couldn’t urinate.

On Saturday, Gorgi Mboob told The Fatu Network he could not himself comment on the issue, saying the police spokesman would come up with a statement.

Police later in their statement on Saturday said claims Ebrima was attacked by Mr Mboob are ‘false’.

“For verification purposes, his family can be contacted,” police said while dismissing the claims.

At least three people who say they were also detained at anti-crime and were on the scene have however told The Fatu Network Mr Mboob did indeed beat Sanneh.

“I saw him do it and I’m ready to testify anywhere we go. I was there with 25 other people,” one of them said.

Coronavirus continues its harrowing onslaught as 61 people join 216 people in testing positive for the disease

0

The coronavirus pandemic continued its worrisome onslaught on Saturday amid the confirmation of 61 new cases.

The ministry of health in its situation report No. 106 said: “Sixty-one new cases registered, bringing to 277 the total number of COVID-19 cases ever confirmed in the country.

“This denotes that about 1 in every 4 suspected cases reported tested positive for COVID-19. Over 90% of the new cases have had no recent travel history out of the country.”

‘It’s false’: Police completely deny reports Gorgi Mboob beat Ebrima Sanneh

0

Police said on Saturday reports its top commander Gorgi Mboob beat Ebrima Sanneh are false.

Police has come under fire amid reports its head of its anti-crime unit Gorgi Mboob beat the 26-year-old while he was being detained at the anti-crime in Bijilo.

Police however said Saturday evening in a statement: “The Office of the Inspector General of Police has noticed with great concern a story circulating on social media with caption ‘Gorgi Mboob accused of attacking Ebrima Sanneh in his genitals’.

“This story is not only false but calculated to mislead the public.

“Today Saturday the 25th of July 2020 around 05:00hrs, the Police Anti Crime Unit received a call for assistance as certain individuals were fighting outside the former Duplex Night Club. A team of Officers were dispatched to the location where they effected arrest on certain individuals.

“The parents of the arrested persons were called and it was during this time when Ebrima Sanneh complain[ed] of abdominal pain. He was given police escort together with his family members to the hospital. Medical examination was conducted on him and he was said to be without any complications as indicated in an ultrasound scan report.

“For verification purposes, his family can be contacted.

“The Inspector General’s Office strongly advise all bloggers, writers, and journalist to verify facts on security matters before publication. The cooperation of the public is highly solicited.”

Muhammed Jawara expresses outrage after drug officers carried out an operation on his farm which saw his employees arrested and taken and farm left without guard

0

By Lamin Njie

Gikay Farms chief executive officer Muhammed Jawara has expressed anger after drug law enforcement officers carried out an operation on his farm which saw his employees taken and the farm left without any security.

A team of DLEAG officers descended on the farm situated in Toubakuta Kombo East last Thursday arresting three of his employees found at the farm.

The boys were arrested at around 8pm for allegedly being in possession of cannabis and taken to the DLEAG office in Brikama – as the multi-million dalasis farm was left without anyone to look after it.

Jawara who’s based in the United States in a video statement made available to The Fatu Network insisted he found the operation itself suspect, as they have been operating for six years and such has never happened.

“I hope what am thinking is not true. I hope it’s not because we had an opposition leader visiting the farm recently, I hope this is not retaliation,” Jawara said as he called out the police throughout.

He said elsewhere in the video: “There are so much stuff there. So at night, 8pm, they arrested all these boys and refused to leave one person to look [after the farm].

“[This was] just for a joint. Am not saying that was ok or it was not ok. But you come into a private property, a Gambian entrepreneurial property at night and arresting everyone that was on site, leaving that property with all these things? If you were not aware that you have all these properties there, then I can understand.

“But they saw all these things there. They saw the tractor, they saw the truck, they saw the generators, they saw the solar panels, they saw the papayas. They decided to leave everything there unprotected, unguarded. Because they found a joint in somebody’s bag. And when the farm manager pleaded with them on leave at least one person to protect, to look after the property, the answer was ‘that’s none of our business’.

The police spokesman Superintendent Lamin Njie (not the author of this story) could not comment on the issue as he insisted drug operations is not the province of the police rather the drug law enforcement agency.

DLEAG spokesman Ousman Saidyba reacting to the claims confirmed to The Fatu Network there was an operation.

He however explained: “To say the farm was targeted because Ousainou Darboe went there has no base and I don’t believe there is any evidence to that effect.

“On the other hand, that place is around the border and there is a team that patrols the area. Our seizures in West Coast Region is always very huge and even your people have covered us several times were we made arrests around the border areas.

“We only have specific places were our people are and these traffickers will always avoid that areas. So on timely basis our officers will go on patrol. So it was one of these patrols they identified this place they suspect to be a farm.

“So they arrived there, identified themselves. They found three boys. They first conducted personal searches on the boys and found nothing on them. They then identified a room that was there. They made it clear to them they want to search that room. They searched the room and found some quantities of suspected cannabis.

“They asked them but none of them claimed ownership. And the Act, Section 35(2), is very clear. That where a suspected prohibited drug is found somewhere and nobody claims ownership, all of them should be taken.

“So the senior officer on the ground, when he realised that there were valuables there, he then asked them of the number of the owner of the place. They gave him the number of somebody who resides in The Gambia here. When he called that person, the person said it was late and he would not be able to get there (the farm).

“So the officer then said since it’s three people and they cannot do the investigation there, they have to take all of them into custody. The assumption is you can leave one person there but what if the person you leave there is actually the actual owner [of the cannabis].

“So they took them to the station. Upon their arrival, when they were interrogated at the station, one of the now confessed ownership. The officers on duty then released the other two boys so that they can return back to the property, then in the morning they can take witness statements from them.

“Perhaps someone might say why didn’t one of the officers stay or they leave a team there to protect the property. We have to be very careful. You don’t know what is there. You don’t have an inventory of all the assets that are there. So what if tomorrow they then come and say x, y and z is missing?”

‘It’s not a war’: Poet Saffiyah Joof clarifies she’s only out to establish the truth

0

Poet Saffiyah Joof has clarified she’s not waging a war against feminism but rather out to establish the truth.

Joof has sparked a huge debate since Friday following her comments Gambian women have to understand that the main agenda of feminism is to create a ‘destructive’ mindset into our young ladies so that they may disrespect their men.

Joof had insisted on Friday: “Do you know that majority of the feminist women later become lesbians because they don’t want men to control them. Some uses vibrators to satisfy their sexual desires which is creating more harm than good.

“Therefore, men and women are inherently, fundamentally and irreconcilably different and Allah created that. Leadership in any Islamic jurisdiction is given to men not women( example a woman cannot be an imam). Modern feminism is illogically evil and it’s results will lead to more single mothers in the house. Feminist women hate men and they don’t want to get married but need men to satisfy them at times and that will lead women to fornication.

“Most of our ladies are into it due to lack of financial means and they gave out great grand scholarships to such women to keep the movement healthy and alive. And I observed that such women lack the proper teaching of Islam and that will take them time to understand the evil logic behind this movement.”

On Saturday Joof posted further to her Facebook: “Majority of the People are ignorant of what Allah stated in the Quran. First of all, those fighting for women rights have to understand that it’s some ignorant men and bad attitudes of culture that suppress the woman. But Allah command men’s to establish the rights of the Muslim woman. What I will accept is if we African women join together to advocate or fight for our rights without depending on an outside organization or using their laws and following their agendas in other to lead this movement.

“There is no doubt that Islam clearly stated the position of a Muslim woman in her society. If men should follow these commands. Then women will understand that they have more opportunities and they are at peace than any other woman in this world because Islam commands the man to fully take care of the woman( shelter , clothing and feeding). And of course she had the right for education and work “when necessary”. But if we are talking about equity and equality a woman shouldn’t be example a president, an imam leading prayers etc. So there are certain positions that we can’t lead. We must understand this in our fight for our rights.

“Those people that started this movement. Their beliefs and our beliefs are completely different. We can’t take their agendas and advocate for it . Our fight should be in line with what our religion stated. There is a limitation, a boundary, a clear line that we shouldn’t skip. Violence against women Islam said No. And I do advocate for women empowerment but that goes with the teaching and principles of Islam.

“What is completely wrong or what I am against of is recruiting young women to become feminist. Telling them that they don’t need a man and they can stand for themselve. Creating a bridge between men and women to become enemies And they refuse to enlighten them that women and men are suppose to work hand in glove to establish or create a better future for the society.

“I am a poet and I do talk about the issues that happens in our society. I am not fighting only one issue or one group of people. I believe in awakening people through my pen.”

Lamin Darboe writes to Noah Touray over his sacking

0

Lamin Darboe has confirmed he has filed a petition for ‘unlawful’ termination to the office of the secretary general and head of the civil service.

“Yes, I did receive a letter of termination on 24th June 2020. I responded to it on 25th June 2020, duly served to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports. I also filed a petition for unlawful termination to the office of the Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service on 25th June,” Mr Darboe said on Friday as he broke his silence about his firing as NYC boss.

He continued: “While the Permanent Secretary of MOYS responded, maintaining their position, I am yet to receive any response from the Secretary General on the faith of my petition.

“I have decided to hand over on July 3rd not because I recognize the decision as legitimate. I have handed over in the interest of youth and the nation.”

Senegal strengthens coronavirus testing for travellers

0

Senegal is strengthening its coronavirus testing capacity to enable travellers to get tested before leaving the country, and testing those arriving in the West African state.

Senegal, which depends on tourism for around 4% of GDP, has reported 9,422 cases since the outbreak, with 182 deaths.

It lifted a ban on international flights from July 15 but said it will apply the principle of reciprocity to travellers from countries that do not allow citizens from Senegal.

Around 1.7 million people holidayed in Senegal in 2019.

The health ministry has accredited four testing centres in the capital Dakar, from only one at the onset of the outbreak, to test travellers. It plans to expand testing in other major towns.

Papa Alassane Diaw, who manages the IRESSEF lab in Dakar, told Reuters on Friday that their two labs, one close to the airport, had the capacity to carry out 2,000 tests per day, but the labs were currently testing around 100 to 150 every day.

“This centre is a health ministry station. It wanted it for travellers flying out of the country because a lot of countries require a COVID-19 test before entering their territory.” Diaw said,

Senegal has carried out around 104,495 tests so far since the outbreak in March.

SAMSUDEEN SARR – COMMENT: UN chief condemns! Is Mali the first ‘African Spring?’

I wonder how many people have heard the condemnatory speech recently uttered by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on July 17, 2020 in South Africa on the celebration of Mandela’s International day where he hit several rough nerves among advocates of global capitalism, virtually denouncing the system as “our embraced economic order” that has failed the hopes and aspirations of the overwhelming majority of mankind in favor of a few. In his blunt criticism of its disproportionate distribution of global resources and opportunities that favors a tiny minority over the rest of humanity, he bemoaned the lack of conscience and empathy behind what he underscored as the 26 richest people in the world insatiably controlling more wealth than the 3.8 billion commoners constituting half the population of the earth. The secretary general went on to highlight our betrayed trust in the system which has been laid bare by the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic affecting mostly those working in the informal economy (the Gambia ‘rabaraba’ work force, namely). That in its wake, while the disease has brought us the deepest recession since World-War 11 and the broadest collapse in income since 1870, a tiny number of billionaires and millionaires still enjoy better health care, live safer and are hardly affected by its high infection and mortality rate.

Mr. Guterres didn’t only decry the problem as an unsustainable-vicious system that is projected to push one-hundred-million more people into extreme poverty but further described how it may engender famine of historic proportion. He illustrated what he analyzed to be a fragile world now, “exposing our fallacies and falsehoods everywhere” coupled with the misconception that free markets can ascertain healthcare for everybody or the delusion that the human race had permanently eradicated global racism. He no longer believes in the myth that we are all in the same boat and suggested the adoption of urgent remedies to improve the status quo.

Plus in symmetry to what worsens the phenomenon, he illustrates the inherent and pervasive corruption organic to most or all capitalist institutions, more harmful in political establishments.

His message has not augured well with scholars and elites convinced of the perfection of capitalism over any universal economic system that is believed to be grounded on the objective of fulfilling human salvation and therefore should be spared all such kind of ‘extremist criticisms’.

Some are even calling for his resignation from the world body for such utterance, while others attack the whole UN organization for its failures, incompetence or uselessness and the need to even defund it.

President Donald Trump reelected for a second term will be thrilled with the guaranteed support of England’s Boris Johnson and some other xenophobic world leaders to see the disintegration of the organization.

S.G. Guterres is now likened to American presidential aspirant Senator Bernie Sanders for his “far-left viewpoints” rooted on socialist and communist ideologies. Remember Senator Bernie Sander’s catchphrase in the wretchedness of the 400 richest Americans having more money than the combined wealth owned by the rest of the 329 million US population while citizens unnecessarily die of curable diseases for lack of affordable healthcare, the best education opportunities earmarked for the richest, the unjustifiable homelessness everywhere and all other itemized calamities? The Senator never hesitates to particularize the ugliest idiosyncrasies of capitalism

As much as I will never subscribe to the notion of substituting capitalism with socialism, the only alternative economic system we know, I think the UN Chief diplomat has a legitimate point in calling for radical reformation of the bias Western system.

However, thanks to communism the Chinese have undeniably lifted millions of their people from abject poverty and ignorance into world-class sophistication within record-breaking time; nevertheless the kind of society they reign-over has ever tailored policies primarily favorable to members of the communist party founded since 1921.

And I see no difference warranting the hypocritical hullabaloo over how the 1.3 million Rohingya Muslims persecuted in Myanmar from how the 12 million Uyghur Muslims mainly in China’s Xinjiang province are genocidally encamped and sterilized. Hey, why is the UN Human rights or Genocide prevention commission mute about this problem in China? Where the heck are the Arabs who funded the Myanmar case? I think Ba Tambadou is still available with ample experience to burst the Chinese? Don’t you think so?

To me, the Chinese situation is unsustainable and will ultimately implode sooner or later. Hence, it was capitalism yesterday, capitalism today and certainly capitalism tomorrow but with much anticipated difference.

I can however remember how similar aspersions were cast on Mr. Guterres when in his inaugural speech soon after his assumption of the position of UN Secretary General in January 2017, warned the superpowers to stop inciting, funding and waging wars that are nowadays all reckless and not winnable, epitomized by the protracted debacles in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria. To the billionaires always hitting jackpots in the manufacture and sale of weaponry, the secretary general for saying so had become an existential threat to their global market and “Wall Street” stocks. The war in Yemen was only two years old from their incitement and prolongation where American and British weapon dealers were pocketing trillions of dollars from weapon sale to oil-rich Saudi Arabia spearheading the genocide in Yemen.

By extension, while outgoing Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon was in total support of France and Senegal committed to invade the Gambia and forcefully oust the APRC government in 2017, Mr. Antonio Guterres throughout opposed and tried to discourage the military adventurism of settling the Gambian electoral dispute by war. Thank God, President Jammeh averted the disaster by yielding to reasoning. Though weapons profiteers had lost a regrettable opportunity in the failure of an “imminent” war falsely outlined as a mission to go and kill or flush out MFDC and Charles Taylor’s rebels out of the subversive Gambia Armed Forces. Yes, I like Mr. Antonio Guterres.

Still on a related reasoning, I see a broader picture painted by the secretary general from the harmful impact of the pandemic affecting all of us in a way that should concern all governments. Will America and Europe continue to be what they used to be after this crisis? The hub of global capitalism with all its adverse effects on the downtrodden being quickly normalized again? I don’t think so. But I also don’t think there is any wizard capable of giving us a precise or accurate prediction of how things will turn out to be in the future.

Governments seem to be merely pretending as if they are in control or in command of their sense of direction but considering all their erratic behaviors I see them as mere bluffs. None of them know what tomorrow holds for humanity.

The European Union after an abnormal emergency session this week, agreed on a borrowed stimulus package of 850 billion Euros to cushion the crash of their free falling economies expected to soon put their work forces into deep recession.

I also saw the French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in Lebanon invited to discuss and try to see how to help solve the problem of the Arab nation speedily running out of raw cash. But the Frenchman didn’t sound too honest to me for not telling them that France doesn’t have enough or extras to offer needy nations; but in a classic bluff, warned them to first start from stopping the prevalent corruption by their politicians.

That should be an awakening message to most African countries totally dependent on foreign aid to keep the wheels of their economic engines turning, especially Francophone African nations paying France, $500 billion dollars annually on a stupid colonial agreement that will now be utilized to rescue French citizens but not Senegalese, Malians, Ivorians, Gabonese or all the other slavish French loyalists in the continent.

Not knowing or having any alternative plans to what the Neo-Colonial masters offer them, leaves these nations vulnerable to internal civil unrest that may bring down most governments.

It will be very unlikely for France or the French foreign minister Drian to advice African politicians to start fighting corruption in their governments for obvious reasons. They have indeed been clandestinely encouraging it, although the people are rapidly being educated through social media about the greed and crookedness among these corrupt leaders.

Mali is currently facing an unprecedented backlash caused by corrupt politicians in an unprecedented manner that has certainly scared the devil out of the leaders of ECOWAS who may also be the next to deal with their fed up population. President Macky Sall of Senegal is for the first time asking international creditors to cancel Africa’s foreign debts as the only way out.

This may actually be the beginning of “The African Spring” when corrupt leaders will have to give way to honest heads of state. Otherwise our floating African boat will sink in the high seas with irreversible ramifications.

Europeans will not want to be too concerned with the corruption of African leaders, factoring the $50 billion dollars they steal every year from their people and hide it in their banks and never in African banks. Of course, such amount of wealth cannot be safely hidden in African banks, lest the word goes around from employees to the tinniest villages on how Hadim Dakar got rich so quick from his monthly income. Hence the Europeans and Americans often show them all the tricks on how to hide these stolen national wealths in their banks or at other offshore depositories not traceable by anyone other than the depositors and perhaps discreet middle persons working for the banks. Sadly, the majority of these rogues often die losing all their stolen money hoarded in European and American financial establishments like in the cases of Mobutu and Abacha.

The stoppage of this unconscionable racketeering must be prioritized among all post “African Spring” governments better fashioned on zero tolerance to corruption, like Singapore did long ago to achieve their enviable economic success.

On a final note, I wish to declare my full support to the “African Spring” in the same way I support Secretary General Guterres’ call for a better world or a better monetary system devoid of senseless greed and corruption or unchecked exploitation of the underprivileged masses and the colored races.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony of new batch of medical supplies and sewing machines to the Office of the First lady at State house on Friday, Ambassador Jianchun said his country will continue to stand by The Gambia during these challenging times, according to a State House news release.

“A consignment of 10, 000 medical masks, 1,000 N95 respiratory masks, 100 protective suits, 100 safety goggles, 79 infrared thermometres and 15 set of sewing machines were handed over to Her Excellency, Madam Fatou Bah Barrow at the State House. They will be forwarded to some target beneficiaries in the country,” State House said.

“I would like to express admiration for Gambia government and people’s efforts in fighting the corona virus,” he said, according to State House.

“This in return will further assist in protecting people’s lives and health,” he added.

The Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Mamadou Tangara described the current Covid 19 situation in the country as “exceptional crisis” that requires urgent attention of all actors to effectively combat it, according to State House.

“We cannot thank you enough for your support,” Honourable Tangara said. “When we talk about a community of shared future between China and Africa, this is a typical demonstration of it,” he added, noting that the pandemic has gone across borders and affects everyone around the world.

The medical supplies came from Guangxi Zhuang regional government in Southern China, which is twin city to the city of Banjul as the capital of The Gambia. On top of those supplies, the Chinese Embassy in Banjul also added 15 set of electronic sewing machines.

Lamin Darboe labels his sacking as ‘unlawful’ as he breaks his silence one month after his services were terminated as NYC chief

0

Lamin Darboe has insisted those that sacked had not put country and the interest of the youth first.

Darboe was removed as head of National Youth Council last month having been in the role for six years. Scores of youths have railed against his removal.

Friday marked one month since the development and Mr Darboe used the moment to break his silence on the issue.

He said: “Today marks one month since my services were unlawfully terminated as the Executive Director of the National Youth Council (NYC). It’s as well been one month since I wrote a petition to the Secretary General and Head of Civil Service and I’ve not yet received any reply.

“I must admit that the circumstances of my leaving office as Executive Director are not pleasant. But I am not sad or bitter. I am of course disappointed that those who by the stroke of their pen terminated my services had not put country – the interest of the youth – first before self.

“Nonetheless, I thank Allah the Almighty for my life, strenght and wisdom to serve my country – and the youth against all odds.

“I loved my job. I respected my job. I valued my work. I had left better paying job for it. I sacrificed my career for it. For me, serving my country when its most needed – and at the apex of youth matters in particular- wasn’t just to earn my keep. It was an honour. It was fulfilling. The staff have been phenomenally committed, hardworking and professional. I enjoyed your company. I learnt a lot from you and i will remain grateful. And if I have offended anyone of you during course of our work, please accept my apologies and you’re forgiven. I didn’t intend to hurt anyone.

“To the youth, I am overwhelmed by your show of support and solidarity. You’re worth serving. I don’t have the right words to express the deep feelings of gratefulness. Not that I am surprised. We are one. We’ve always been one. And we will always be one regardless of the God we worship, the language we speak, our backgrounds or our individual differences.

“We’ve come far in our reforms for the freedom and development of youth. Let us continue to march forward. Rest assured that I will be by your side. After seeing what I have seen from you, my conviction is greater today than it has ever been. This is not the time to give up on our aspirations for our country – and the youth.

“Deep down, in my heart, lies the young people of The Gambia. This love i shall never forfeit! Whether I am the Executive Director of The Gambia National Youth Council (NYC) or not, I shall remain resolute and committed to the course of young people. This is a duty on my part, a duty that I must continue to discharge with passion and diligence.”
