“We Trust the Justice System”- Dr Ismaila Ceesay

0

The leader of the Citizens’ Alliance (CA) party, Dr Ismaila Ceesay has expressed his trust in the country’s Judiciary and by extension the entire justice architecture. Dr Ceesay was answering to a question by The Fatu Network during his recent press conference at the party’s office.

The question came after Dr Ceesay made public his party’s move of going to the high court as he seeks to challenge his disqualification by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

“Yes, we trust the justice system, especially recently, we have seen recent rulings that show the current judicial system is impartial, they follow due process, and they are doing their job.

If we didn’t trust the process, we wouldn’t take it [our case] there, we trust it, that’s why we took it there. So yes, we trust the justice system,” Dr Ceesay said confidently.

He further revealed that the case is now in court, and there shall be a hearing on Tuesday at 1:30 pm. He said the party is focused on that case. After that, they (CA) can now make a decision as to the way forward for the party.

“We feel that our rights have been violated, the IEC did not follow due process in the way they handled our nomination. Therefore, we think the best way is to go to the court and let the court decide. The courts are here for everybody, the law is here for everyone, to protect everybody’s fundamental human rights,” Dr Ceesay said.

President Barrow Vows to Eradicate Irregular Migration

0

By: Dawda Baldeh

President Adama Barrow leader of the National People’s Party (NPP) has vowed to eradicate irregular migration by creating job opportunities for the youth if re-elected in December.

He made this statement on Thursday at Sabal Sanjal, Kaur and Fass (Upper Saloum) during his campaign tour. He said irregular migration has been a major reason why many young people risk their lives to go and seek greener pastures abroad.

President Barrow said he currently has plans to invest fifty million dollars ($50m) in fishing, an action which will be a step towards eradicating irregular migration.

“We have a $50 million project for the fishing industry,” he said. Adding that his government will purchase fishing trollers and other equipment needed for fishing.

According to him, they will build storage facilities for the cooling of fish and other marine resources. He said the youth will be trained to become professional fishermen.

He cited the constant shortage of fish in the markets during festivals blaming it on the lack of citizens engagement in fishing activities.

“If I am re-elected president, my government will change this trend by supporting the youth,” President Barrow promised.

He also committed to the construction of a place where the fishing trollers will be parked.

“We will build storage facilities for the fish. We will purchase all the required equipment and train the youth of this country. The youths of this country need employment and we are ready to support them,” he said.

“We cannot eradicate irregular migration if we do not keep the youth engaged in meaningful work,” he explained. “My government will continue to work hand in gloves with relevant stakeholders so that our goals can be achieved.”

Under-fire UDP defends foreign media decision

0

UDP has issued a statement pushing back at criticism levelled against the party for turning to foreign media after boycotting some media houses in The Gambia.

UDP are on a boycott of The Fatu Network and this week, the party announced it is forgoing time allocated to them at GRTS as they accused the IEC of trying to stifle free speech.

Some Gambians have bashed the party after Darboe appeared on TFM of Senegal in a campaign ad.

But in a statement on Saturday, UDP said: “In recent weeks we have received many requests for interviews by foreign media and audiences with some development partners. This is a clear indication that the UDP is the next government in waiting.

“Given the tight schedule, the party leader is, unfortunately, unable to answer positively to all the requests for interviews but will do so at the most convenient time!

“UDP is committed to flying the Gambian flag high and restoring a proper image of the country in and outside our borders.”

UDP heads out after prayers from top cleric Bakawsu Fofana

0

UDP leader Ousainou Darboe and his contingent have started making their way to Banjul to cross to Barra for their huge campaign.

Mr Darboe is President Adama Barrow’s main challenger in next month’s election and his campaign officially starts today with a meeting in Fass Njaga Choi.

His supporters gathered at his house in Pipeline which also houses his private office. There, top Imam Bakawsu Fofana prayed for the travelling contingent and declared that the Mr Darboe would win the election.

President Barrow says CEO of proscribed Three Years Jotna is his father Darboe

0

President Adama Barrow has said he sacked the UDP contingent from his government because they gave him problems – and also said the group that wanted to bring his government to an end in 2019 was headed by his ‘father’ UDP leader Darboe.

Three Years Jotna rolled out a vast campaign against President Barrow’s rule in 2018 and the campaign dramatically collapsed in 2019 after police cracked down on the protesters. The group was then banned.

Speaking at a rally in Farafenni as part of his presidential campaign, the president told citizens: “These people have troubled me. Since 2017 they have been fighting me, since 2017 I could not get my peace from these people. But there is one thing that I say to them that offends them which is ‘only a hypocrite will say the knife that killed the lion cannot kill the chicken’.

“They were in my government and they gave me problems and I sacked them. Tyey said my government would collapse but that was the day my government gained greater strength. They then set a new plot [against my government] and they formed Three Years Jotna.

“Three Years Jotna’s chief executive officer is my own father Alhaji Ousainou Darboe. But when I throw teargas on them and to this day… You know I told my security leaders that it takes a fight to end a quarrel. From that day to now, Three Years Jotna died in this country as if it never existed. And when they realized that plan also failed, my elder entered into the house and said ‘we should come up with a new plan’.

“When they made their new plan, they came out and said ‘let’s remove President Barrow on the 4th of December 2021’. When they came up with that plan, I told them we have now come to a consensus. [That] it’s Gambians who own ‘4th December’. That I don’t own that and they don’t own that and it’s Gambians who own it and so the fight is over.

“I told my officials to release those that were being prosecuted. That the fight is over and since they now said they want to come through the front door and we have agreed to that. But Billahi Wallahi, what we would do to them on the 4th of December would be worse than what we did to them in Three Years Jotna.”

‘Bakawsu is a big marabout’: Imam Bakawsu Fofana says Darboe will be president next month and repeats his assertion he is a big marabout

0

Imam Bakawsu Fofana was at UDP leader Ousainou Darboe’s office on Saturday morning to pray for the party’s officials as they final get the ball rolling on their campaign.

UDP will cross to Barra at 1pm on Saturday for their presidential campaign – and Imam Fofana has boldly predicted leader Darboe will be president next month.

“If Allah wills it, he (Darboe) is the president next month,” Imam Fofana said at Darboe’s office on Saturday.

According to Imam Fofana, he was invited to Mr Darboe’s office to pray for the party as officials head out for campaign.

He said: “Since the start of this election, no leader visited me to say he wants me to pray for him to become president except Darboe. He came up to my house and yesterday we were in telephone calls that they are travelling today and I should come and pray for them. So it could now be I am UDP’s since they hold me in high regard. I am neutral but the person who thinks of me highly owns me.

“But I love you all and to pray for peace for all of you. I am at UDP’s meeting today since I am worth it for them. And I am praying for them to get what they want and they will get it since Bakawsu is a big marabout. And next month you all will say that Bakawsu is indeed a marabout whose prayers do come to pass since you will get what you want.”

The peace message is drawn from my religious obligation combined with my responsibility as senior citizen and commitment to always promote the perseveration of our National Heritage of Democracy, Unity, Stability And Peace For the Advancement of our country, The Gambia. It is important to recognize that this Heritage is born from the solid foundation for democracy, peace, and social cohesion, that was built by our visionary forefathers for the advancement of our country. Fellow Gambians, this Heritage must remain our guiding principle to safeguard our unity, freedom and peace because in the absence of these values we cannot advance our country.

Fellow Gambians, as we recently conclude the unprecedentedly most contested presidential nominations of twenty-six (26) in our country and at the dawn of the presidential campaigns, it is important that I humbly call you to preserve our national heritage of unity, peace and stability for the paramount advancement of our country, The Gambia.

It is therefore your responsibility to serve as ambassadors and be national pride by upholding our National Heritage which is the bedrock of our National Anthem calling us to live in unity, freedom and peace each day as a nation with one destiny. Being ambassadors also requires you to  uphold our determination, as a nation, to build The Gambia We Want after our collective and victorious fight for the democratic and peaceful change on 1st December 2016 against the 22 years of brutal regime and its bad governance.

Fellow Gambians, in upholding your ambassadorship, I would encourage you to be the change you want for our country by respecting our constitutional, legal and democratic values as well as our cohesive social fabric during this highly tensed presidential campaigns and ensuing presidential election. Please avoid politics to destroy our shared destiny and mission to achieve the democratic, just, peaceful and prosperous Gambia We Want and by extension the Africa and global community we want by respecting zero tolerance to the increasing disrespect for political leaders, ethnic-based hate speech, fake news and political violence. You must also bear in mind that the absence of these values would have negative consequences on the region and world at large because we all share the common goal of making and living in a democratic, just, prosperous and an interconnected global community.

In discharging your good citizenship and moral responsibility to protect our National Heritage of unity, peace and stability for the paramount advancement and protection of the globally respected good image of our country, you must nurture the emerging democratic environment, which we fought for under the auspice of Coalition 2016 against the 22 year brutal autocratic regime.  Such a stance will help us to achieve our common goal of “Never Again” through  national reconciliation, unity, peace and stability in the paramount interest of  advancing our country. This shows our commitment to protect our peaceful co-existence and to move our country in the democratic, just and prosperous path we want.

At this juncture, history obliges me to pay tribute to Coalition 2016 because of their exceptional courage and sacrifice in engineering the democratic and peaceful change for the paramount interest of building  a solid foundation for good governance, social cohesion, sustainable peace and shared prosperity for The Gambia. I also pay tribute to all the professional organizations and the friends of the Gambia who bravely supported the cause of the change.

Fellow Gambians I also deem it human and professional to seize this opportunity to ask you to give a minute of silent prayer for all those who suffered, migrated to foreign lands and lost their lives during those bleak years just for exercising their inalienable rights and constitutional rights to contribute to the liberation of our dear country, The Gambia.

You must also exhort all others to cast their votes based on these values. I will vote for the Candidate of my choice based on these principles and values in the paramount interest of our country.

Fellow Gambians, in observing your democratic and peaceful presidential election you must exercise tolerance and constitutional right to vote peacefully and massively, as buttressed by the recently signed Inter Party (IPC) Peace Accord. It is important to appreciate that voting peacefully and massively will give our unprecedented presidential election its deserving credence and milestone in the history of our nation.

It also crucial to protect your votes peacefully by being alert to the entire voting process in order to ensure a free, fair and transparent election. Please return peacefully to your families after voting to listen to the election results and respect the results to be declared by IEC in collaboration with the regional and international observers.

At this juncture, I wish to commend the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), under the able leadership of Honorable Alhaji Alieu Momar Njie, for their success in creating the enabling environment for the unprecedented and peaceful nominations of twenty-six (26) presidential candidates for the 4th December 2021, under a constraining Electoral Act, decreed by the autocratic regime.

I also commend the twenty-six (26) presidential aspirants and their diverse militants for contributing to the peaceful presidential nomination and celebration processes of their candidates, which took place from 30th October through 4th November 2021. These aspirants all share a common goal and commitment to serve our country.

I also deem it important to acknowledge the significant contribution of the security forces for maintaining peaceful and orderly nominations and celebrations processes under enormous. In the same vein, I  thank the media fraternity for its exceptional performance in covering and disseminating the nominations and celebrations processes as well as the peaceful Gambian ambiance to the outside world. It also worth acknowledging the opportunity they gave to  presidential candidates to share their respective agenda and mobilize support

In concluding my peace message,  I wish to encourage you to pledge to serve as ambassadors for democracy and our national heritage for peace, unity and stability by remaining law abiding and the envy of our country, our African region and the world at large.  it is therefore incumbent on you to respect the spirit and letter of our National Anthem which calls for our collective firm pledge and promise to strive, work and pray so that all may live in unity, freedom and peace each day as well as for God to keep us in our homeland ever true.

Gambia: Election candidates challenged on their commitment to human rights

0
  • Presidential election is a chance to strengthen respect for human rights to Gambia
  • Amnesty calls on candidates to sign seven-point human rights manifesto
  • Laws restricting freedoms must be overhauled

As campaigns begin and voters get ready to go to the polls in Gambia for December’s presidential elections, Amnesty International calls on all candidates to break with the country’s past by publicly committing to improve the human rights situation in seven key areas if elected.

The organization is launching a seven-point human rights manifesto, calling on candidates to commit to protecting the right to freedom of expression; protecting the right to freedom of peaceful assembly; fighting impunity; ending sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination against women; promoting economic, social, and cultural rights; adopting a law prohibiting torture; and abolishing the death penalty.

The repressive regime of former president Yahya Jammeh was marked by mass arbitrary arrests, rampant torture, extrajudicial killings, and relentless persecution of dissenting voices.

Samira Daoud, Amnesty International’s West and Central Africa Director

“If we have seen substantial improvements in the civic space since assumption of power by president Adama Barrow, next month’s election is a chance for Gambia to see its human rights record significantly improve. Therefore, we are calling on all political parties and candidates to sign our manifesto and publicly commit to protecting the rights of everyone in Gambia.”

The manifesto notably highlights the need to ensure and promote the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly which are still under threat in the country. The criminal code contains several provisions restricting these human rights. This includes criminalization of sedition as related to the president and the administration of justice, imposing stiff penalties including imprisonment, confiscation of publications and printing machines.

Other problematic laws include:

  • The Information and Communications Act, which contains provisions giving national security agencies, investigating authorities and the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority the power to intercept communications for surveillance purposes without effective judicial oversight;
  • Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which gives too much discretion to the Inspector General of Police to restrict protests with no review mechanism. Over the past five years, this provision has been used to restrict peaceful protests.

Amnesty International is calling on all candidates to publicly commit to repealing or revising these laws and ensure Gambia’s legislation abides by international and regional human rights treaties the country has ratified.

They must also ensure accountability for human rights violations. Political parties and candidates must ensure that all Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission’s recommendations regarding prosecutions and fighting impunity are effectively implemented.

Members of former president Yahya Jammeh’s regime who are accused of grave crimes should be brought to justice and immediately removed from the security apparatus if found guilty. Candidates should also commit to repeal the Indemnity Act of 2001 which gives the president the power to shield security officers from prosecution for any acts committed during an unlawful assembly or emergency. Torture must be absolutely prohibited, and the death penalty abolished.

The manifesto also insists on the need to protect women’s rights.

The Gambian government outlawed Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in 2015 and child marriage in 2016. However, discrimination and sexual gender-based violence against women persist.

Amnesty International calls on all political parties and candidates to commit to taking all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination and violence against women, including supporting their significant participation in the legislative, executive and judiciary fields.

They should also pledge to take progressive measures to promote access to food, education, housing, and health.

People in Gambia deserve what civil society has been campaigning on for years : a country that fully respects human rights. Candidates have a crucial role to play to see this happens. The first step is to sign the manifesto.

Unhappy UDP quits GRTS, blames IEC

0

United Democratic Party has issued written a letter to the IEC accusing Election House of interpreting media laws relating to use of G.R.T.S to include stifling of a candidate’s right to review and criticize the incumbent’s policies, programmes and conduct.

UDP made the accusation in a letter to IEC boss Alieu Momar Njie on November 11.

UDP’s letter signed by communication chief Amadou Scattred Janneh reads: “The United Democratic Party looked forward, with great anticipation, to finally and effectively use the very little airtime provided to it on the Public broadcaster, GRTS.

“This is in accordance with the Independent Electoral Commission’s Media Rules and other regulations governing the use of public media during the electoral cycle.

“The United Democratic Party, as a responsible and law abiding organisation, has always subscribed to principles of fair play and all the precepts of democratic practice.  It is our contention, therefore, that political expression protected by the Constitution of The Gambia and reflected in various legal documents, must be upheld especially during the political campaign period.

“In this context, it is perplexing to say the least, that the I.E.C would interpret media laws relating to use of G.R.T.S to include stifling of a candidate’s right to review and  criticize the incumbent’s policies, programmes and conduct.  This is both impractical and inconceivable in a democratic environment.

“We believe such a limitation is not in line with the letter and spirit of the law and relevant regulations.  The IEC’s denial of the UDP’s right to political expression through the public broadcaster is unacceptable.

“Therefore, the UDP is not submitting any new content merely to fill airtime on GRTS.  The party would rather continue to use other media than to forfeit its right to use the public broadcaster without undue hindrance.”

More Defections: APP Deputy National Youth Mobilizer and Others Join NPP

By Dawda Baldeh

Modou Lamin Gaye, Deputy National Youth Mobilizer of the All People’s Party (APP) and Mamadou Alieu Bah a key figure of the ‘No to APRC/NPP Alliance Movement’ have officially defected to the National People’s Party after meeting with President Adama Barrow.

“I come here to form an alliance with the president because his mission and vision for the country are very clear. As a good citizen, I should not be selfish to join a party that is working hard to develop the country,” Modou Lamin Gaye told journalists after he met President Barrow.

Gaye believes NPP is not only the winning party but also the party that aims at unifying Gambians.

“Our party has been rejected so the best thing is for me to join a party that serves the best interest of the people,” he explained.

Mamadou Alieu Bah alias MA Bah a key figure of the breakaway APRC movement also renewed his loyalty to President Barrow. Bah told journalists that he renewed loyalty to President Adama Barrow come after he has realized Barrow’s vision for the country.

“I came to pledge my firm support to President Adama Barrow because I realized that he is the type of leader Gambia needs,” he said.

He stated that President Adama Barrow’s main target is to reunify the citizens. Bah further stated that citizens are divided into different groups which if not properly handled can cause chaos.

Seedy Njie Deputy Spokesperson of the NPP expressed the party’s appreciation to MA Bah and Modou Lamin Gaye for joining the NPP. Njie described their coming as a clear manifestation of NPP’s victory.

“This is an indication that every Gambian is behind the President,” Njie said.

He said all the candidates who have endorsed the president have seen the right path. Adding that some are very influential in the political field and having them in the party is a big plus.

“These people have decided to fight for President Barrow to help him win the election for a better Gambia.”

While welcoming the endorsement, Njie assured the candidates of a better change.

“I want you to feel free this Party is for all Gambians who are in for development,” he ended.

Sierra Leone Association of Journalists Raises Concern Over Sudden Indefinite Suspension of Auditor General

0

By: Christian Conteh

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has raised concern over what it describes as the sudden indefinite suspension of the Auditor General of the Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL), Mrs. Lara Taylor-Pearce, and one of her deputies Mr. Tamba Momoh.

The association says this action is particularly worrying because, in the estimation of SLAJ, Audit Service Sierra Leone under the leadership of Lara Taylor Pearce has a hitherto unblemished track record of professionalism and integrity in the discharge of its duties spanning over ten years and two political administrations.

A statement from the association says while it (SLAJ) respects the authority of His Excellency the President to hire, suspend, or fire, it urges that in line with constitutional provisions, in Sections 119, sub-section 9 and Section 137 respectively, the Attorney General immediately makes public the composition of the Tribunal along with clearly stated Terms of Reference, and a short timeframe as would be most appropriate for the Tribunal to function.

“Already the action has created a level of uncertainty within the local governance circles which we understand is being closely monitored by not only our international friends but also the donor community whose contribution to our fledgling economy cannot be underestimated,” The SLAJ statement reads.

It further noted that while the association waits for the outcome of the tribunal, which is expected in the shortest possible time it regrets that considering the recent impressive statistics on control of corruption in the just-released MCC Scorecard, government can by this action seek to overturn all those gains in less than 24 hours.

“SLAJ is concerned that given the severe economic constraints facing most citizens, decisions are being taken that are creating undue disaffection, confusion, and distrust. We urge the government to maintain the independence and integrity of our institutions and continue to give hope to the people of Sierra Leone,” The statement signed by the Acting Secretary General, Alhaji Manika Kamara maintains.

“We Are Not Going to Endorse Any Political Party” -Ebrima Tabora Manneh.

0

Disqualified Independent Candidate Ebrima Tabora Manneh has revealed at a press conference on Thursday 11th November 2021 that he will not endorse any political party or candidate for the 4th December Presidential Election.

The People’s Alliance Party Leader was one of the candidates who presented his nomination papers to the countrys Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) with hopes of running for president of the Gambia.

After the nomination process, he was disqualified after the Commission discovered he submitted a symbol in the name of an unregistered political party and did not comply with section 42 subsection 2 (a) of the country’s Elections Act by submitting support of nomination by less than five thousand registered voters.

Ebrima Tabora Manneh noted that although he has had discussions with most political parties, he will not endorse any political party or candidate.

“In terms of endorsement, I have told you that the message that went out was fake news, it was all propaganda. Yes, I have seen the President, I have met the people from the UDP, I have met GDC, as well as NUP and PDOIS and what I have told them is I will revert to my people. I have done that, and we have discussed …,

We are going to concentrate on restructuring our party to prepare for the coming elections, therefore we are not going to endorse any political party at the moment,” Ebrima Tabora Manneh said.

However, he said the party members can freely vote for a candidate of their choice.

“But we have told our members and our people that they are citizens of this country, and it is their civic duty to participate in the elections and to vote the party or candidate of their choice,” he said.

He ended by praying that the best candidate wins the December elections, whilst noting that they would build their party after the elections process.
