‘After beating me up in a dark room, more than ten men were asked to rape me’ Fatoumata Jawara narrates ordeal at The NIA

The Gambia’s horrific human rights records is once again on the spotlight as Fatoumata Jawara a 26 year old mother of three explains how she was brutally tortured while in detention. Fatoumata was arrested with a group of youth activists in April after they took to the streets demanding for electoral reforms. The degrading physical treatment she experienced in detention, came in the form of stripping her naked and asking more than ten men to rape her. According to an affidavit filed in court by her lawyers, the men stopped after she told them to kill her after raping her for she knows no other man except her husband.
