United Democratic Party has pulled out of all its political activities until after the Muslim fast month of Ramadan.

“Being advised on the current situation, the UDP has taken the responsible decision to postpone its well-organised fundraising event until after the Christian Lent Period and after the Muslim Ramadan and we propose to reschedule to Saturday May 22,” leader Ousainou Darboe said while speaking to citizens on the occasion of 56th anniversary of The Gambia’s independence.

The government had announced this week it was banning all activities that require crowds including political activities to combat a spread of COVID-19. The government however said the ban would only take effect on March 8.

UDP leader Darboe has however express surprise at the delay in the lockdown and called for an immediate implementation of the drastic measure.
