“How many presidents are women and why aren’t their husbands ‘First Husbands,” he added.
Honorable Sallah said the problem has gone beyond the African continent to other parts of the world, saying no one has ever talked about the office of the ‘First husband’ while citing Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister who was a woman but the issue was never been taken up.
Sallah made it clear that he was not condemning anybody stressing that both wives of the president are respectable people and should not be a subject of discussion.
“Putting it in the budget has made it a subject of discussion,” Sallah asserted.
The former spokesperson of the coalition government said family relations is personal which should not be a matter for the republic because a republic does not recognize anybody who is not elected or appointed for a post in the public service.
Honorable Sallah further advised the need to move away from dependency on external budget support and project grants.
He spoke about the salary increment, saying salaries are not ordinary matters. He argued on the need to look at the grades and improve on them to build confidence and generate savings somewhere to increase the earning capacity.
Meanwhile, several interventions were made by various NAMs including Honorables Alhagie S Darboe, Brikama South, Sulayman Saho, Central Badibu and Sidia Jatta of Wuli West among others.
