The army discharged Umpa Mendy and Ansumana Tamba shortly after their court martial last year, it has been revealed.
Mendy and Tamba were high ranking military officials who were close to former president Yahya Jammeh. Mendy was the former leader’s top bodyguard while Tamba was the commander of State Guard Battalion.
The majors general first got into trouble when they accompanied fleeing Yahya Jammeh to Equatorial Guinea. They were quickly arrested and put to trial for desertion following their return to the country last year. But a general court martial acquitted them of charges of desertion amid lack of evidence.
They were discharged and their benefits processed, army spokesman Major Lamin K Sanyang told The Fatu Network.
