The ‘peaceful’ march will be between the Arch at the mouth of Banjul to the Ministry of Justice.

APRC’s press release said the party will hand over a petition to the minister of justice for onward delivery to President Adama Barrow.

‘I think you’re here with an agenda’: Mai Fatty dramatically ends interview after sudden row with journalist

0

Mai Fatty suddenly rowed with Modou Lamin Jammeh on the latter’s Ifang Bondi show on EyeAfrica TV that saw the GMC leader dramatically walk out of the interview.

“Mr Jammeh, if you want the interview to proceed, don’t cut me,” Mr Fatty began after the interview had gone to over 50 minutes, to which Jammeh replied he was not cutting him. Jammeh insisted he needed to ask Mr Fatty questions but Fatty warned he would view Jammeh cutting him as disrespect.

As the back and forth continued around the issue of Semlex, Mr Fatty dropped the mic on the table and blasted: “You’re not here to know the facts. I think you’re here with an agenda.”

The GMC leader moments later stood up and repeatedly said that the interview was over. Jammeh remain seated.

Mr Fatty had earlier on said: “You didn’t come to my house to argue with me, you’re not respecting me. I’m putting an end to this interview. The interview is over.”

He later walked out.

Mai Fatty terminates interview and accuses journalist of treating him with contempt

By Sarjo Brito

Former Interior Minister and Leader of the Gambia Moral Congress Party Mai Fatty is hitting back at critics who say he is not thick skinned following an interview with Eye Africa TV which was terminated by the GMC leader mid production. The question which did not sit well with the GMC leader has to do with corruption allegations involving him and Belgian company Semlex. Mai Fatty was accused of accepting bribes to the controversial awarding of a contract to Semlex to produce the country’s national documents including identifications cards and passports. Mai Fatty vehemently denied the allegation and was later vindicated by parliament after a committee probing the matter made no mention of his involvement. While Mai was cleared by Parliament, the allegations of corruption continue to follow the former Interior Minister.

Mr Fatty explained Friday: “I encourage viewers to watch my interview with Eye Africa Africa TV this evening. I terminated the interview at some point after enduring almost an hour of sustained contempt. As a result few people wrongly attributed the reason to the Simlex question. Let me remind them again: I was absolutely cleared by the Gambia Government of not doing anything wrong or illegal, through Cabinet via Ministry of Justice. That wasn’t enough for my political enemies. They Petitioned the Gambian Parliament to conduct independent parliamentary investigations into the matter. After two years of exhaustive investigation by the National Assembly, I was completely cleared again. When Hon. Halifa Sallah presented the Report of the investigation before the full House of parliament, my integrity was further consolidated. Those who are not satisfied by this, can demand further investigation by the United Nations Security Council, ECOWAS or the African Union. Each investigation will further prove me as a Leader of honesty and integrity in public office.

“I terminated the interview because I felt being disrespected and treated with contempt by the interviewer. It is a known fact that I have never ran away from the media or failed to answer a question. Yet, I will NOT permit any person to treat me with contempt simply because I am a public figure. Everyone, whether politician or not, has a right to human dignity, and fair hearing, including me. You can’t ask a question and condition me to give you the answer you want. Yours is to ask and mine to answer. Let the public decide. Lastly granting an interview is not the right of a journalist. It’s my choice to grant or not. If I do, be professional and allow me the opportunity to respond without putting words into my mouth or extracting from me a preconceived answer in your mind.”

Journalist Modou Lamin Jammeh responds

Journalist Modou Lamin Jammeh who interviewed Mr Fatty has however reacted amid Mr Fatty’s comments.

He wrote: “Yes, I like Hon. Mai Fatty naturally and I will continue to treat him with dignity and respect like any other person. But hey – that won’t stop me from asking him tough, tough relevant questions anytime he is on “Ifang Bondi”!

“Wokoolaa, my style will remain the same, nothing absolutely will make me change it. Muq abadan!

“And those critics out there, I want to commend you for a job well done. Don’t stop criticising me, because if you do, I will put a stop to my programme. Keep them coming let’s keep the red fire burning. You guys are the best!”

APRC recites quran as party marks 27 years of Jammeh’s overthrow of Jawara

0

APRC on Thursday held a quran recitation to mark 27 years of former President Yahya Jammeh overthrow of former President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara.

Mr Jammeh on July 22, 1994, toppled Jawara who had been in power for over 30 years. But Mr Jammeh himself lost power in 2016 after 22 years.

APRC members gathered at the party’s bureau in Manjai on Thursday to mark the event’s 27th anniversary.

According to the party’s deputy spokesman Dodou Jah, they have never been allowed to commemorate 22nd July since the coming into being of the coalition government.

“We resorted to doing it peacefully, reciting the quran and making prayers for ourselves and the nation,” Mr Jah said.

APRC dismisses as ‘false’ claims by Pa Modou Mbowe ex-President Jammeh asked him to tell APRC supporters not to go into coalition with any party

0

APRC Thursday issued a statement dismissing as false claims by a member of the party Pa Modou Mbowe that he spoke with former President Jammeh who reportedly said APRC should not form an alliance with any political party including NPP.

The claims have been making the rounds online in the past few days.

APRC however in a statement signed by first deputy leader Ousman Rambo Jatta insisted Jammeh never spoke with anyone to dissuade APRC supporters from going into an alliance with any political party.

“All we can confirm to the Gambians at this moment is that the former president is in support of the executive and our political efforts to help the party move forward and restore his legacy as a great former president who deserves the respect due to him,” APRC said.

UAE’s internal security chief in Gambia, meets President Barrow and State House says his visit is to thank Gambia for supporting his Interpol boss bid

Press release by State House

President Barrow on Thursday received the General Inspector of the Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Major General Dr Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi. General Al Raisi was accompanied to the Presidency by the Inspector General of Police, Abdoulie Sanyang, Minister of Interior Honourable Yankuba Sonko and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Honourable Mamadou Tangara.

General Nasser Al Raisi told the Press that his visit was to express his appreciation to the President and the Government of The Gambia for the support accorded to him as the official candidate for the UAE vying for President of Interpol in 2022.

Dr Al Raisi is an expert in forensics, management and international anti-crime coordination. The General said that his discussions with the President centred on “shared priorities for international security and policing, especially the critical role of Interpol in supporting regional policing efforts”. He added that discussions included fostering cooperation between The Gambia and the UAE in infrastructure and diplomacy.

General Al Raisi highlighted that the partnership between the two countries would help strengthen peace and security in The Gambia and beyond its borders.

He thanked the President for the warm reception accorded to him and his delegation while also expressing similar sentiments towards his counterpart, the Minister of Interior Honourable Yankuba Sonko and the Inspector General of Police Abdoulie Sanyang.

July 22nd: How Adama Barrow destroyed Jammeh’s billion years dream

On this day 27 years ago, former president Jammeh and Edward Singhateh marched from Yundum Barracks to Banjul and seized State House. As they were marching with their loyal soldiers, former President Jawara managed to get on an American military ship in the sea behind State House. Jawara’s time as president after 30 years was definitely up. Jammeh, 29 years at the time, then ascended as Gambia’s new leader.

Jammeh oversaw a two-year transition as a military head of state and in 1996, elections were held where he ran as a civilian after retiring from the army. He won that election and then went on to win three other elections, in 2001, 2006 and 2011. While Jammeh had done well in terms of infrastructural and other developments such as the University of The Gambia and GRTS TV, the man had also committed some terrible things. He doesn’t have the best human rights record and the TRRC has confirmed he over 200 murders occurred during his 22 years rule. Soldiers from his so-called death squad have explained to the TRRC how they took orders from him and executed both citizens and non-citizens.

In 2016 Jammeh decided to seek re-election. It was going to be the fifth time. And while casting his vote, Jammeh looked confident, smiling all the time. But Jammeh dramatically lost election to Adama Barrow, his main challenger.  And silence fell on State House as the electoral commission chairman Alieu Momar Njai said Mr Barrow was Gambia’s new president.

Jammeh initially called President-elect Barrow and congrajuluted him. A week later, he went on State TV GRTS and said he was annulling the election because he was cheated. A bitter political impasse erupted but it ended in January 2017 with Jammeh leaving the country as ECOWAS troops entered the country seeking to remove him from power.

Jammeh’s rule will be remembered for him wanting to rule for one billion years only for that to end prematurely in 2016. Jammeh would have been in power today if fate had treated him kindly. He is now living in exile in Equatorial Guinea.

‘Because other people want to be president?’ President Barrow explains why he didn’t leave office after three years

0

President Adama Barrow has lifted the lid on why he did not honour a 2016 pledge to leave office after three years.

The president agreed with coalition partners to serve for only three years if he should be elected in the December, 2016 presidential election. He went on to win the election.

But President Barrow later flipped and said he would serve for five years instead of three, which led to rise of the Three Years Jotna movement.

But speaking to QTV in an exclusive interview, the president explained: “I didn’t change my mind. I think there was a condition attached to three years. But people try to forget about those conditions. We wanted to do a lot within that three years, when we were outside. That’s what we thought. But we found out that it’s impossible.

“These reforms we’re doing right now, we cannot do it in three years. The constitution, we cannot do it in three years. The TRRC, we cannot do it in three years. So these were the things that were attached…

“So you want us to abandon that and just go because other people want to be president or we want to go for elections? And at the same time, I think even the arrangement was also wrong. It was a very hasty thing we did.”

Baba Jah, Lawyer Darboe & The Limits Of ‘Free Speech’

The concept of “Free Speech” does not exist, like the oxygen we breathe, because it has a value in and for itself. There are many societies, and many social situations, in which “Free Speech” has been considered to be a bad thing explicitly – or implicitly through social and cultural norms.

“Free Speech” In The Political Space Of A Democratic State

“Free Speech” is considered vital in a democratic state because it allows the citizens, the ultimate sovereigns in a democratic state, to make informed decisions about their government; informed decisions about those to whom the citizens will entrust state power between elections.

Reputation Of Others & Limitations On “Free Speech”

In Lombardo, the European Court of Human Rights held that it was “only in exceptional circumstances” can limits on free speech be justified to protect “the rights or reputations of others”.

In other words, Free Speech is a sacred cow in democratic societies and the courts will bend over backwards to protect it. The 2013 Defamation Act here in UK has extended that Free Speech protection, more so to journalists where public figures are involved. It is virtually impossible for a public figure in Lawyer Darboe’s position to win a libel/defamation case in UK: because reporting on Lawyer Darboe would be considered a matter of important public interest – because he is a politician and aims to obtain the publics’ trust to run the country.

Baba Jah’s Justification For His Actions

Baba Jah’s argument is that Lawyer Darboe is vying for public office. Baba says that he has known Lawyer Darboe for some twenty-six years and it is his, Baba’s, opinion that “Lawyer Darboe is not fit to be President”. Thus far Baba Jah’s opinion, with which the thousands of UDP supporters would disagree, is protected Free Speech. But …

Did Baba Jah Go Too Far?

Both in the interview with The Fatu Network and later with Freedomnewspaper, Baba Jah was careful NOT to divulge any information about the child who he referred to as “Lawyer Darboe’s Child”. Neither did Baba Jah divulge who the child’s mother is. To that extent, Baba Jah seems to have complied with privacy laws as they are in UK and USA. Of course, the same privacy laws cannot be invoked to protect a public figure – as both Boris and Trump found out when caught in the beds of women who are not their wives!

Prevention Of Disorder & Free Speech

The European Court of Human Rights has held, also in Lombardo, that “prevention of public disorder” is a “legitimate aim” allowing authorities’ interference with Free Speech. In Africa, we can think of “Radio Rwanda” broadcasts that led to the 1994 Genocide, and in South Africa last week Zuma Jnr’s tweet urging Zuma supporters to “Loot Responsibly”! The European Court of Human Rights has also denied the Prophet Muhammad Cartoons the protection of Free Speech – because the cartoons could lead to “public disorder”.

Would Baba Jah’s “Insult” of Lawyer Darboe Lead To “Public Disorder”?

From the reaction of Lawyer Darboe’s followers on-line, it is clear that such utterances could have led to “public disturbance” in The Gambia if Lawyer Darboe were President. But then if Lawyer Darboe is Head of State, there will be other laws to deal with “insults” to the Office of The President.

The Vital Importance Of Free Speech Generally

Clearly all governments will try to stifle Free Speech (Julius Assange is still rotting in a British jail without trial). Those in power, and the criminals and the corrupt, would want to stifle Free Speech and Press Freedom because “their business” thrives best in the dark. Publicity and day-light is bad for corruption and abuse of office … and that is why in The Gambia people like Deyda Hydara and Chief Manneh had to die and the Independent Newspaper has to be burnt down. Free Speech and Press Freedom is a continuum. and thus it has to protect even the likes of Baba Jah, however distasteful some may find his opinions and mode of delivery. Thus it is important for those in public office and for aspirants in public office to develop “thick skins” to withstands the slings and arrows that come with having Free Speech and a Free Press.

APRC – NPP Coalition: Understanding the Basis and the Rationale

By Sulayman Gagigo

As things stand, UDP has the highest chance to win an election under a single party contest. The past local government and parliamentary election results served as enough evidence to prove this claimed. Both APRC and NPP have recognized this political reality and the danger of watching that to happen.

Because UDP constitutes hate, aggression and arrogance. And as highly predicted, allowing the party to win the election on December 4th will mean endorsing revenge, minority oppression, Barrow’s and Jammeh’s prosecution. Not only that, the worst also awaits Foni, APRC and the NPP heavyweights.

To avert these fears, many more threats pose by a UDP government, APRC and NPP showed the need to settle all past differences, strike a compromise, unite efforts and defeat the UDP to save the nation from division, suppression, ethnic tension, aggression and hate. This is the basis for inItiating the NPP – APRC talks.

The whole rationale is to bar UDP from forming the next government so that revenge, tribalism and oppression will be averted. While averting this national tragedy on December 4th, new space will be opened to foster reconciliation and social cohesion under a climate of humility, peaceful environment.

APRC recognized the challenge she, her based and supporters continue to face under Barrow, most of which are the results of UDP early yrs in government. Fonis militarization and the selective removal of her natives from the civil and public service were the making of UDP and GMC.

Similarly, the experienced of coalition 2016 has been noted. The party is also aware of the lack of enforceable legislative provisions in the 1997 constitution to obligate the executive to respect gentleman arrangements over national constitution.

That is why, to commence this process, the party has smartly put forward unnegotiable demands to NPP as preconditions for coalition talk. In addition, other accountability, control mechanisms like a 50-50 parliamentary seats are being studied too.

These demands are being reviewed and how Barrow handles them will, to a greater extend, decide the coalition. In fact, safe to say that its these demands that are being discussed, not coalition.

A major beneficiary of this coalition, if succeed, will be president Jammeh and Foni whose faith are strongly anchored on the December 4th election. How?

The prosecution of Jammeh, a section of Foni citizens, and the continuous militarization of Foni rest in the decision of December 4th. We APRC supporters must realize this fact, learn very fast to catch up with the prevailing realities. Sentiments and emotions can’t never be solutions.

God forbids, this coalition fails, UDP ascends to power, APRC and Jammeh should prepare for prosecution, suppression and even lifetime opposition. Because once UDP ascends to power, expect that all apparatus of government will be changed to suit their rigging system so as to enable them cling onto power forever.

Hence, those claiming that this coalition isn’t in the interest of Jammeh and APRC should visit the coalition formula  properly.

Yankuba Touray’s conviction

As an adversely mentioned perpetrator in the 1995 gruesome murder of Ousman Koro Ceesay; the then Finance Minister, Yankuba Touray was availed of the opportunity to give his side of the story to prove his innocence or accept culpability. The former Local Government Minister was ill-advised and continued to be under the illusion that the so-called constitutional immunity was enough to barricade him from testifying at the TRRC and any subsequent prosecution for the wanton act that snuffed the life out of Koro. He resorted to a contemptuous behavior that left the Chairman of the TRRC with no choice but to order for his arrest. This contemptuous behavior ignited a chain of events that emanated from the TRRC, rippled around the metropolitan area, and ultimately changed his life.

Two years from his arrest, Yankuba Touray would be convicted of murder and sentenced to death. The strong reactions from his family, friends, and loved ones clearly show that they are struggling to come to terms with a conviction they see as unfair and outrageous. That kind of reaction from the groups of people mentioned above is to be expected and understandable. However, it is important for all and sundry to exercise restraint and allow the justice system to address such issues that have legal ramifications. There is another option at Yankuba’s disposal, and his lawyer did say that they are going to file an appeal. That is an alternate legal route they can take, the outcome of which again will be determined by the courts. The truth be told, Yankuba did not get engulfed in this sticky situation by accident. Therefore, he cannot be absolved of responsibility because his disobedience or disrespect towards the Commission in the form of behavior that opposes or defies the authority of the TRRC expedited his prosecution even before other adversely mentioned perpetrators would learn their fate nested in the TRRC recommendations which are in the offing.

Many people argued that the conviction of Yankuba is unfair to him because he is not the only adversely mentioned perpetrator in that gruesome murder, or that he did not act alone. Well, an opportunity was given to most if not all of them to prove their innocence or accept culpability, but he is the only one that chose the constitutional immunity route, even when offered unsolicited legal advice from the lead counsel as to how his contemptuous behavior could boomerang on him. He was determined to stand his grounds, again under the illusion that the constitutional immunity barricade was enough fortification against all possible legal actions. It is often said that a house built on a weak foundation will always crumble.

What the families, friends, and loved ones of adversely mentioned perpetrators ought to understand though is that those they are trying to defend are alleged to have participated in wanton acts that snuffed the lives out of others or ravaged them beyond repairs. So, there have been irretrievable losses and irreparable damages and the sad reality is that many grieving families still do not get closure. Pronouncements or actions that are uncompassionate and inconsiderate are not recipes for reconciliation and will not heal the wounds either. A lot of heinous crimes and gross human rights violations have occurred in The Gambia between 1994 and 2016, and the perpetrators are our very own people. While your family member, friend, colleague or loved one may be your hero, they are some other family’s worst nightmare because their ferocious predatory actions irreversibly changed that family’s life. We cannot change the past unfortunately, but we can certainly right the wrongs of the past and most importantly, learn from it. Getting closure for grieving family and serving justice are pivotal in this arduous journey. No judgement or ruling will be seen by all and sundry as justice served because our expectations and preferences are different.

‘It’s part of being leader’: Mali military president Assimi Goita speaks after knife attack

0

Interim Mali President Assimi Goita, a special forces colonel who orchestrated two coups in the last year, said he escaped unharmed after an assailant tried to stab him during prayers at a mosque in the capital Bamako on Tuesday.

Security agents overpowered two men in the mosque and threw one into the back of a military pickup truck, video obtained by Reuters showed, as Goita, dressed in a sky blue embroidered robe, was ringed by bodyguards.

The president’s office said investigations were ongoing. It did not immediately advance a motive for the attack, which occurred during services marking the Muslim Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) holiday at Bamako’s Grand Mosque.

Mali, the theatre of French-supported operations against al Qaeda and Islamic State-linked insurgents for a decade, was thrown into political turmoil after a military junta led by Goita toppled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in August 2020.

Goita served as vice-president to transitional leader Bah Ndaw until the latter’s ouster in May.

“Everything is fine, there is no problem. It’s part of being a leader,” Goita told state television hours after the attack. “There are always people who are unhappy. There are people who will try to destabilise.” (Reuters)

US Embassy confirms the American people donated 304,000 vaccine doses to Gambia

0

The US Embassy in a statement on Wednesday revealed over 304,000 vaccine doses are what the people of the United States donated to The Gambia.

“As President Joseph R. Biden committed earlier this year, vaccines donated by the American people have arrived in The Gambia. On July 20, 151,200 doses of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 single-shot vaccine donated by the United States government arrived in The Gambia, the first tranche in an initial donation of over 304,000 doses, the US Embassy said.

This single-dose vaccine has proven highly effective in preventing serious illness from the COVID-19 virus, it added.

The United States is pleased to partner with the African Union, COVAX, WHO, and UNICEF to support the Gambian government’s vaccination efforts led by the Ministry of Health.

Sharing these vaccines serves as example of the importance of the longstanding ties between the Gambian and American governments and people, the US Embassy said, adding these are the same safe and effective vaccines that have saved countless lives in the United States.

At the airport in Yundum on Tuesday when the first tranche arrived, US Ambassador Richard Carl Paschall said the US will continue to donate vaccine supply.

“This delivery is only the beginning. We will continue to donate vaccine supply, as it is available to us, and we will soon begin delivering on our contribution of 500 million Pfizer doses for distribution by COVAX to countries around the world, including The Gambia. Only by working together – and by getting vaccinated! – can we combat and end the COVID pandemic,” said U.S. Ambassador R. Carl Paschall.

These vaccine doses are part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s global efforts commitment to share U.S. vaccine supply with the world and are on top of the $2 billion provided by the United States to COVAX in April to buy vaccines for distribution. As the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic at home and work to end the pandemic worldwide, President Biden has promised that the United States will be an arsenal of vaccines for the world.

America sends massive 151,000 doses of one-shot Covid vaccine to Gambia, health chief Dr Samateh says donation could not have come at better time

0

The United States has donated a total of 151,200 doses of the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen (J&J/Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine to boost the national vaccination campaign currently underway.

With the support from the COVAX Facility, the vaccines arrived in the country on Tuesday, 20th July 2021 and were received at Banjul International Airport by officials of the Ministry of Health, other Government Officials and Development Partners, a press release by the health ministry said.

The contribution of the Government of the United States comes at a moment when COVID-19 cases are escalating rapidly in The Gambia as more than 925 positive cases have been confirmed between 23rd June and 16th July. Since the confirmation of the first COVID-19 case in March 2020, The Gambia has registered a total of 6,920 cases and 190 deaths.

“President Joe Biden committed that the United States will be an “arsenal for vaccines” and we are pleased to partner with the African Union, COVAX, WHO and UNICEF to support the Gambian government’s vaccination efforts led by the Ministry of Health. This initial delivery from the U.S. contribution of over 304,000 doses of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine – on top of $2 billion provided by the United States to COVAX in April to buy vaccines for the world – is only the beginning.

We will continue to donate surplus vaccine supply, as it is available to us, and we will soon begin delivering on our contribution of 500 million Pfizer doses for distribution by COVAX to countries around the world, including The Gambia. Only by working together – and by getting vaccinated! – can we combat and end the COVID pandemic,” said H.E Richard Carlton Paschall III, U.S. Ambassador to The Gambia, according to the press release.

The J&J/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the World Health Organization under the Emergency Use Listing (EUL) as well as by the Gambia Medicines Control Agency. This donation will significantly close the gap towards achieving the national target of vaccinating 60 per cent of the population by June 2022. In order to urgently scale up the COVID-19 vaccination program, the Ministry of Health will immediately introduce the J&J/Janssen vaccine into the nationwide campaign which is currently underway and implemented in communities and health facilities across the country, as well as in different strategic locations such as bantabas, points of entry and other identified areas.

Gordon Jonathan Lewis, UNICEF Representative, underscored that “this generous contribution of shared vaccines from the Government of the United States will go a long way towards achieving vaccine equity in The Gambia and will ensure that we can vaccinate a larger number of individuals in a shorter period of time, especially now that new cases are rapidly rising. Getting vaccinated is the right thing to do, getting vaccinated is the ethical thing to do.”

Dr Desta Tiruneh, WHO Representative, added that “WHO welcomes the substantial contribution of vaccines from the Government of the United States through COVAX at a time when The Gambia is witnessing a significant spike in the number of COVID19 cases. Global vaccine sharing is the only way we can vaccinate at least 10% of the population of every country by the end of September 2021.”

In receiving the contribution, Minister of Health Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, noted that “The Gambia is currently witnessing its third wave of the epidemic and therefore this donation could not have come at a better time. These vaccines will not only complement our national vaccination program but also strengthen overall preventive public health measures. On behalf of our government, I extend our sincere appreciation to the United States of America, through the U.S. Embassy in The Gambia, for its significant contribution of lifesaving vaccines to our people, as well as to our development partners – WHO, UNICEF, GAVI, CEPI and WB – for their continued technical and financial support towards the country’s COVID-19 response.”
