Former President Yahya Jammeh can come back to The Gambia and live like everyone else, President Adama Barrow has said.

Former President Yahya Jammeh has since January 2017 been living in Equatorial Guinea after suffering a shock electoral defeat in 2016. His supporters continue to find it difficult to come to terms with the new order.

President Barrow is embarking on a tour of the country and at a meeting in Foni Sibanor, one of former President Jammeh’s stronghold villages, Mr Barrow said Jammeh’s time as president is ‘over’.

“His time is over and he will not come back. This country is his country. He can come back and live like everyone else, that can happen. But for him to be president of The Gambia? That will not happen again,” Mr Barrow said.

Jammeh’s party APRC has been calling for his return to the country and at a rally last month, the party’s interim leader Fabakary Tombong Jatta said no one could stop the former tyrant from returning to the country. Thousands of t-shirts were printed and sold as part of the party’s November 23 meeting, a meeting titled ‘Homecoming of Babili’.

Most of Jammeh’s supporters were said to have bought the t-shirt on the belief their ‘dear’ leader was returning to the country after almost two years in exile.
